SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Scientists are harnessing a not-so-secret weapon in the fight against climate change: plants.“Plants are very good at one thing and that is to catch carbon dioxide out of the air and using the power of the sunlight to fix it to make into bio-materials," said Wolfgang Busch.A plant scientist and professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Busch is co-director of the Harnessing Plants Initiative (HPI). "Plants are superheroes," said Busch. “They can do what nothing else can do, no technical solution at that scale, to catch a lot of carbon dioxide and fix it.”Yet, humanity is still losing the climate change battle. After decades of burning fossil fuels, the planet continues to warm, with natural disasters growing more frequent and intense.Busch says while plants suck up carbon dioxide, some of it is released back into the atmosphere.“How can we actually make plants better in not only catching the carbon dioxide but keeping it in the soil?” said Busch.That's the challenge his team set out to solve, working to identify genes that help plants store more carbon underground. “Trying to enhance their superhero capability even more," said Busch. They’re developing plants with deeper, more massive roots, rich in a substance called suberin, a natural carbon storage device. Combined, these traits supercharge the plants, allowing them to absorb more carbon dioxide and keep it locked underground.“We think it has all the characteristics of something that can make a huge impact addressing this very difficult question, how to draw down carbon dioxide from the air and store it," said Busch. These climate fighting traits can then be transferred to the world’s six most prevalent crops: corn, soybean, canola, rice, wheat, and sorghum.By tapping into the existing agricultural supply chain, researchers say more than 75 percent of the world’s cropland could be converted into carbon storage.“We think in 10 to 15 years, after partnering with different stakeholders, seeds will be available to farmers at scale to plant the first carbon-sequestering crops,” said Busch.Busch says one of their top priorities is ensuring the initiative will benefit farmers, aiming to produce plants that will equal, if not exceed, the yields of current crops. And storing carbon underground not only protects the atmosphere but enriches the soil, making it more fertile.Busch says the plants will also be more resilient to climate-related threats, with an enhanced ability to hold water, resist pathogens, and tolerate stress"Gives us hope that we can make a huge impact; if we can develop crops that are better at storing carbon for longer and if these crops are adopted at a very large scale," said Busch.The initiative has received over million in grants, with the most recent boost from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donating million. 2867

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Season 16 of the Bachelorette was unlike any other. The original Bachelorette, Clare, fell quickly in love with one of the men on the show and left engaged to him. Then a new Bachelorette, Tayshia was brought in. San Diego local Chasen Nick was there through all of the drama, trying to vie for each woman’s heart.Chasen, who has lived in San Diego for close to ten years, said his friends submitted him for the show. He said he was brought in during the pandemic, so he knew Clare was the Bachelorette and he knew the season would be shot in a quarantined setting at a Palm Springs resort.Tayshia sent him home on the episode that aired Nov. 24 and he said looking back, he felt more of a connection with Clare.“I have to be completely honest, I’d say Clare. I didn’t really get the opportunity to progress with Tayshia and it was just a surface level connection getting to know each other,” he said.Chasen had a few heated moments during his time on the show, including calling Tayshia a “smoke show” in front of the other guys in the house. Looking back, he says he would’ve picked a different word. He said one part of the journey he would not change, though, was his interactions with Ed, another guy in the house. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in.
