CAIRO — Egypt's state TV says the country's former President Hosni Mubarak, ousted in the 2011 Arab Spring uprising, has died at 91. The TV says Mubarak died at a Cairo hospital where he had recently undergone surgery. The report said he had health complications but offered no other details. Mubarak, who was in power for almost three decades, was forced to resign on Feb. 11, 2011, after following 18 days of protests around the country. The Arab Spring uprisings had convulsed autocratic regimes across the Middle East. As more and more people leave California, a local suburb in Nevada is flourishing. From 2013 to 2017, the Wall Street Journal reports that 56 percent of people who moved to Henderson came from neighboring California."They're getting houses that they could never afford in California," said Zar Zanganeh, "houses that are on golf courses."Zanganeh is the owner and broker of LUXE Estates & Lifestyles. He's personally witnessed the California migration. A decade ago, roughly a third of his clients were from California. Today, that number is closer to 70 percent.Zanganeh says Californians are cashing out the equity from their homes and buying a home in Nevada in cash.Outside of the Henderson DMV on Wednesday, 13 Action News spoke with several California transplants.The Robinson family has 13 children. They moved to the state because of the lower cost of living and employment opportunities. As part of a National Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge in Williamson County, Tennessee is a beautiful architectural sight for many. But for some, it’s become a place of pain and grief.“I lost my sister, who was 25, to suicide at the bridge,” Sarah Elmer says.Trish Merelo shares Elmer's grief. She, too, lost a family member to suicide. “I lost my 17-year-old son,” she says.Now, Elmer and Merelo have come together over a mutual understanding of how it feels to lose somebody who has died by suicide.“Seeing what a young suicide does to a school, and to a community, and to a neighborhood, and to a family, it’s unimaginable grief,” Merelo says. Merelo’s son, John, was a senior in high school. He was academically gifted and in marching band. His mom describes him as somebody whose heart would make a difference in this world.Elmer’s sister, Danielle, was a mother of two. Elmer describes her sister as smart, caring, and a big mental health advocate.“Now that’s she’s gone, I just don’t have my other half,” she says. The two women are now doing everything they can to prevent other families from feeling the same sorrow. Together, they’ve formed the Natchez Trace Bridge Barrier Coalition.“Ultimately, what stops bridge suicides is a physical structure,” Merelo says. Their goal is to create an 8-foot barrier on the bridge, so it’s not so easy for someone to jump. Until then, they’re thankful for the new call boxes that were recently planted on the bridge by the National Park Service. The call boxes offer a direct line to 911 and the Tennessee crisis number.“I think the crisis line is more for someone who is in that place and needs that counseling," Merelo says. "I think 911 is for them too, but that’s also for bystanders who see someone in trouble and want to get authorities here."With barely any cell service in the area, the women say the call boxes are essential, and they hope they’ll make a big difference for people in need. “If that call box saves one life, then it is worth it,” Elmer says. Letting somebody know they’re loved and cared for is a critical message everyone needs to hear. On the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, you can pick up the phone for support. But what if you were walking along, and you came across a mental-health first-aid kit? What if you had something you could physically hold onto? That’s where 2363

Arizona State Representative Shawnna Bolick is asking for an investigation into what she describes as unsafe work conditions for Valley postal service workers.Bolick sent a letter yesterday to the President of the American Postal Workers Union, Mark Dimonstein, urging him investigate reports of hazardous working conditions for mail carriers because of the Arizona heat."It is shocking to hear of postal workers having to endure the extreme Arizona temperatures that result in delivery trucks, many of which do not have air conditioning, regularly reaching above 128 degrees," Bolick wrote. "Working conditions must be improved immediately to ensure the safety of mail carriers subjected to these dangerous temperatures."She says many of the workers do not have proper air condition in their vehicles, causing for unsafe conditions. According to Bolick, a worker in her district has sent her daily updates of temperature readings inside a mail carrier vehicle that average 128 degrees.Bolick says a worker even used their dashboard to cook a steak to an internal temperature of 142 degree to show how hot the vehicle gets during the day.When asked for an interview, there was not a USPS representative available, but they did send the following statement:"We want to emphasize the Postal Service works to protect its employees all year through a strong health and safety program. This includes instructions on messaging through the handheld carrier scanners, frequent service talks on recognizing heat illnesses and taking shade or hydration, and street supervision that checks on carriers during the day. Our letter carriers work hard and we appreciate that effort in all conditions."Bolick says several Phoenix area postal service employees have been sent to the hospital recently for treatment after becoming disoriented on the job.She ended the letter by asking for a cause of action from the postal service "to remedy the current situation." 1959
