Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his resignation Tuesday, hours after new sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the embattled politician. The mayor's announcement comes after his cousin gave an interview with the Seattle Times alleging abuse, the latest in a series of allegations against the mayor. The cousin is the fifth person to accuse Murray of child sexual abuse.Murray denied the allegations, as he has in the past. He said he was resigning effective 5 p.m. Wednesday so the scandal would no longer overshadow his office. In light of the latest allegations, he said it was clear it is best for the city for him to step aside."While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business," he said in a statement."To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation."Council President Bruce Harrell will become mayor upon Murray's resignation, Murray said. Harrell has five days to decide to hold the position for the remainder of Murray's term, which ends in December.Murray was elected in 2014 after 18 years as a state lawmaker. He withdrew in May from the Seattle mayor's race, saying the campaign should be focused on issues, not scandal. 1328

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KGTV and AP) — A former Camp Pendleton Marine was found guilty Wednesday of the murders of five women in Southern California more than two decades ago, including a San Diego woman in 1988.Orange County jurors convicted Andrew Urdiales of five counts of murder with enhancements for attacking a volunteer usher after a college piano concert and picking up four prostitutes, driving them to remote or deserted areas, having sex with them and killing them. The verdict raises to eight the number of women killed by the 53-year-old former Marine.Urdiales was previously convicted of killing three women in Illinois in 2002 and 2004. He was given a death sentence that was commuted to life without parole after Illinois barred the death penalty. He was extradited to California in 2011 to stand trial in the murders of five women in Riverside, Orange and San Diego counties between 1986 and 1995. For these killings, California prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.RELATED: Ex-Marine linked to 1986 killing in San DiegoThe penalty phase of the trial will begin Thursday for jurors to evaluate whether to recommend a death sentence for Urdiales or life without parole.Attorneys declined to comment publicly on the verdicts before the trial has concluded.Authorities said Urdiales, who moved to Southern California in 1984 as a 19-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine, killed four women while in the military and a fifth while vacationing in Palm Springs in 1995.According to police and prosecutors, then-Marine Andrew Urdiales shot 31- year-old Maryann Wells in the head in a deserted industrial complex on Second Avenue in downtown San Diego after having sex with her in the early morning hours of Sept. 25, 1988.He then allegedly took back the he had paid the victim and fled, leaving behind a condom from which investigators obtained genetic material that eventually implicated him in the slayingUrdiales attacked 23-year-old Robbin Brandley after a jazz piano concert in 1986 at an Orange County community college and stabbed her to death in the parking lot. Two years later, he picked up Julie McGhee, a 29-year-old prostitute, and drove her to a remote area, had sex with her, shot her in the head and left her body in the desert, authorities said.Urdiales went on to attack and kill three more Southern California women and three Illinois women who were working as prostitutes, authorities said. The California murders went unsolved for more than a decade until Urdiales was arrested after he returned home to Illinois.Authorities stopped Urdiales in 1996 and found a weapon in his truck that he wasn't allowed to carry, prosecutors said. The next year, authorities matched the weapon to the one used to kill the Illinois women and arrested him for those murders. 2796

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) — A group of Santa Clara County coworkers is more than 0 million richer. The 11 co-workers who pitched  a piece into an office lottery pool successfully matched all the winning numbers of the July 24 Mega Millions drawing. The co-workers, who range in age from 21 to 60, decided to play on a whim after seeing how high the jackpot had reached. They have declined to say where they work, other than it's in the financial industry.RELATED: California lottery releases 'check-a-ticket' mobile feature“It was spur of the moment. ‘Hey, did you hear about the jackpot? We should play.’” Roland Reyes, one of the lucky winners, told California Lottery officials. While the group doesn't regularly have a lottery pool, Reyes seemed to know where to go for tickets.“A small business owner. We’ll probably have a better chance with a mom and pop shop,” Reyes said, leading him to Ernie’s Liquors, at 2808 South White Road in San Jose.Surprisingly, the group plans to continue working. Though their supervisor would have understood if they decided to leave — he was in the lottery pool as well.RELATED: Billions of dollars go unclaimed in the lottery each year. Here's why.“We want to keep our jobs,” Reyes said. “We love that company. We love what we’ve built there. We have a good time and want to stay together.”It wasn't clear whether the winners would take the annualized amount of 3 million spread over 30 years or the lump-sum cash option of 0.5 million. Many mentioned putting the money toward mortgages, kids' tuition, helping family members, and traveling.“It helps real people and families,” Reyes said. 1677

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Jorge Ortiz, a 50-year-old construction worker, was taking no chances as Tropical Storm Dorian approached Puerto Rico on Tuesday and threatened to hit the island's western and central region at near-hurricane strength.Wiping sweat from his brow, Ortiz climbed up a shaky ladder under the punishing morning sun and tied down pieces of zinc that now serve as his roof because Hurricane Maria ripped the second floor off his house when the Category 4 storm hit in September 2017.He was forced to rebuild everything himself and finished just three months ago with no assistance from the local or federal government."They told me I didn't qualify because it was a total loss," he said, shaking his head as he added that he was wary about Dorian. "I'm worried that despite all this sacrifice, I'll lose it again."RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint Doppler radar in the hurricane zoneIt's a concern shared by many across the U.S. territory, where some 30,000 homes still have blue tarps as roofs and where the 3.2 million inhabitants depend on a shaky power grid that Maria destroyed and remains prone to outages even in the slightest of rain storms.Dorian was located about 330 miles (530 kilometers) southeast of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was forecast to strengthen during the next 24 hours before passing over or near western and central Puerto Rico on Wednesday as it moves west-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph)."The biggest problem will be the rain," said Roberto García, a forecaster with the National Meteorological Service in Puerto Rico. The storm was expected to dump between 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimeters) of rain in the Windward islands, with isolated amounts of 10 inches (25 centimeters).Dorian already caused power outages and downed trees in Barbados and St. Lucia, and a still-uncertain long-term track showed the storm near Florida over the weekend. The Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, the U.S. Virgin Islands and for the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Samaná. Tropical storm watches were in force for the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Punta Palenque and from Samaná to Puerto Plata. In Puerto Rico, some grocery stores ran out of bottled water as people rushed to buy supplies including generators and filled their cars with gasoline.Government officials on the island warned of possible landslides, flash flooding and power outages, with Puerto Rico's health secretary urging those with certain health conditions such as diabetes to be prepared. The island's transportation secretary acknowledged that crews are still rebuilding roads damaged or blocked by Maria. He said more than 1,000 remain blocked by that storm's landslides.Gov. Wanda Vázquez signed an executive order on Monday declaring a state of emergency and urged those living under a tarp to stay in one of the island's 360 shelters if needed. Housing Secretary Fernando Gil said some 9,000 to 13,000 homes with blue-tarp roofs are located in the region that Dorian is expected to affect the most.Officials also said they would close all public schools by Tuesday afternoon.Jesús Laracuente, a 52-year-old construction worker who lives in the impoverished neighborhood of Las Monjas in the capital of San Juan, had his doubts about the government preparations. Blue tarps are still visible in his community, which can flood even in light rainstorms."The people here are prepared. We already learned our lesson," he said, referring to Maria. "What despairs us is knowing that the slightest breeze will leave us without power. It's the government that fails us."Vázquez said this time, the island's Electric Power Authority has a vast inventory of equipment to cope with storm damage — 1 million worth compared with million during Maria. That includes more than 23,000 poles, 120,000 lights and 7,400 transformers. She said the power company also has signed 33 deals with power companies on the U.S. mainland if more help is needed after Dorian passes. In addition, fire departments in Florida were flying teams to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands ahead of Dorian to bring medical supplies and equipment to assist local authorities with rescue efforts if needed. But Freddyson Martínez, vice president of a power workers' union, told The Associated Press that while the electric grid has improved in some areas, he worries about a lack of power line workers and post-Maria patches including lines fixed to palm trees."Those are problems that are still being corrected to this day," he said. "These are the realities we have to face with this storm."Dorian was expected to move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas on Thursday night or Friday.Meanwhile, a new tropical depression formed Monday between the U.S. eastern coast and Bermuda. It was located about 370 miles (600 kilometers) southeast of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina and was moving north at 2 mph (4 kph) Tuesday with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph). It was expected to become a tropical storm by Tuesday night or Wednesday and continue blowing off the U.S. East Coast this week on a path to Canada's North Atlantic provinces. 5333
