Texas Southern University in Houston evacuated its campus on Wednesday due to a bomb threat received by the Houston Police Department directed at the university. The university announced on its social media channels that all classes are canceled for the rest of the day, and that all students, faculty and employees should evacuate campus. Houston Police said it received the threat via its emergency call center around 1:40 p.m. CT on Wednesday. As of late Wednesday afternoon, there have not been any confirmed bombs found on campus. Texas Southern is a public historically black university with an enrollment of nearly 10,000. 667

That often-blurred line between the office and home is now a little clearer for one creative teacher.Move over Chip and Joanna Gaines.With advance notice he would not be returning to the classroom because of the coronavirus, Cory Streets got to work on a special summer project.Streets just completed an amazing transformation, turning a storage shed in his backyard into a space dedicated to scholastic achievement - like something straight out of an episode of 'Fixer Upper' on HGTV, on a much smaller budget.“Got a can of mis-tinted paint and a carpet remnant. I’m hoping it’ll be a fun way to break up some of the monotony," said Streets.With a young daughter and a second child arriving in October, Streets found himself with limited spots to set up shop inside his home.“It’ll give me a place to come and work quietly," said Streets.Instead of rakes and shovels, Streets filled the shed with all the tools he needs to help his students grow despite being miles apart.“I wanted to make this a more fun and enjoyable experience for myself, but also for the students," said Streets.The consistency of connecting in this newly-created classroom, which has been dubbed the "Mr. Streets Center for Remote Sheducation," is not only expected to help Streets stay focused; he says it will also do the same for his students.“It’ll feel more comforting, it’ll feel predictable, it’ll feel like a routine," said Streets.Streets said there's a lesson his students can learn from the new workspace and that is you have to make the best of a challenging moment.“We’re gonna have a good time, we’re gonna learn some stuff. "It's got to be easy for them to get it, and the more effort there is and time involved in the shopping, the less fresh foods is going to be in that basket," said Brahm Ahmadi, the CEO of Community Foods Market. While he'd never owned a grocery store, Ahmadi understood what the absence of one could mean for a community."Families were disproportionately suffering from diet-related chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease," said Ahmadi. "And then all the residual, other negative impacts that has. For example, family members are sick, they can't work, and then income is reduced."After raising over several million dollars, Ahmadi's vision of a full-service market came to life one year ago."When the pandemic hit, I did still want to come to work because we need a store like this around," said employee Sharon Rance, who's worked at Community Foods Market since it opened."They were one of the stores that survived, they had the essential things we needed," said Eleanor, a local and regular customer. But like the big grocery store chains, the independent market was not immune to the overwhelmed supply chain."I think the whole industry was kind of caught off guard, and then we were also blown away by how difficult it was to build back having product in the store," said Ahmadi. He says changes in the industry are already happening, with manufacturers reducing the number of items they making to keep top-sellers consistently available. Ahmadi knew the market would have to step up efforts to continue serving the already economically fragile community."To help them stretch their even more limited dollars to make ends meet," said Ahmadi. With help from an emergency grant, they've been able to offer shoppers on food stamps a 50 percent discount on their entire purchase. They also began providing free delivery to seniors 65 and older.The market has never been busier. The band Smash Mouth is facing criticism for playing a concert to a large crowd that were reportedly mostly mask-less. The band headlined the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally being held this week in South Dakota.Images from Sunday night’s Smash Mouth concert show a crowd packed shoulder to shoulder in some places, with few people wearing masks.At one point in the concert, a band member addressing the crowd can be heard saying "F*** that Covid s***,” according to KOTA-TV. It's unclear what he's saying before or after that comment.The group defended the concert in a statement given to Billboard; band manager Robert Hayes said "the promoter did a fantastic job with their COVID protocol. They had a very strict social distancing and mask policy in place for all workers."Hayes added comments about the "endless hours" spent to ensure the concert happened as safely as possible and “we are very happy with the outcome."Sturgis city officials allowed the annual event to go on this year, despite pleas from residents, and recommend visitors wear masks and social distance.
