WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — Northern Kentucky law enforcement officials are working extra hard this time of year to keep any "Grinchiness" out of their respective "Whovilles."Before Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Conrad hits the road these days, he arms himself with kindness, in the form of gift cards.“It’s part of the Sheriff's Santa Project,” Conrad said.It’s an idea that was brought to the office three years ago by their chaplain.“I really think projects like this give us a glass-half-full attitude, rather than a glass-half-empty,” Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Rev. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal.The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. I got into this job 15 years ago 'cause I wanted to help people.”Now he’s helping people by helping to give back to the community.“Everybody thinks they're out to get us, but they're here to help us,” said driver Justin Ost, who got a gift card to a local barbecue restaurant.Polley sought out local businesses to donate the gift cards, or people to donate money to be exchanged into cards. “It is just that little nudge that some people need to say there is still good in this world,” he said.The Sheriff's Santa Project runs through Christmas Eve.This story originally reported by Kristyn Hartman on wcpo.com. 1912

When Sgt. Brian Maynard pulled over Laura and Jimmy Baker, he was preparing to deliver a ticket. Instead, the state trooper summoned an EMS team, which delivered the couple's baby girl on the side of North Carolina's US 64 highway.It all began Saturday night in suburban Raleigh when Laura Baker got in a minivan with her husband for a visit to the hospital to check on some contractions she'd been having. Then, 10 minutes into their drive, she suddenly went to labor."I said, 'I cannot control this, we're not going to make it there,'" Baker said.So when her husband spotted Maynard's patrol car, he did everything he could to get the officer's attention, speeding and flicking his lights."As soon as we pulled over, my water broke," Baker said. "And my husband jumped out with his arms up, saying, 'My wife's in labor and I really need help.'"All three knew they didn't have time to get to a hospital. Maynard called the EMS team in nearby Wendell but was prepared to do the job himself."I said, 'OK, well, we're going to do this right here, me and you,'" he told CNN affiliate WSOC.So Baker's husband and Maynard held the mother's hands and urged her to wait for the EMS team."My husband and the trooper were nervous, because they certainly weren't prepared," she said. And when the EMS team arrived, everyone realized they couldn't get Baker on a stretcher. So she delivered in the front seat of the van.It was this team -- as well as the trooper's assistance -- that Baker said she's most thankful for."Without them, I don't know how successful it would have been," she said. "It was maybe a five-minute experience, but a vital five-minute experience. [The EMS team] did everything to make sure it was sanitary and healthy."Baker was taking her baby, Halyn, home Monday and was planning on paying a visit to the EMS team that helped keep her infant daughter healthy throughout the delivery. She doesn't know much about the EMS crew, but she'll be looking for Charlie and Danny, who held her hands throughout the birth and walked her through every step."She was born outside in 40-degree weather, but she's a perfect, healthy little girl," she said. With coronavirus cases spreading among White House staff, the Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed Monday evening that a Plexiglas partition will be used on stage during Wednesday’s vice presidential debate.Peter Eyre, a senior adviser to the debate commission, said that the candidates will be seated 12 feet, 3 inches apart, and that there will be no handshakes allowed on stage between the candidates or moderator.Eyre added that the candidates, Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris, will be tested for the coronavirus before the debate. For the previous debate, the candidates were responsible for their own coronavirus testing.Only the candidates and moderator will be allowed to not wear a mask during the debate, also a change from last week’s presidential debate. During last week’s presidential debate, members of President Donald Trump’s entourage took off their masks during the debate.Eyre said that a small number of ticketed guests will be allowed into the debate hall in Utah.“If anyone does not wear a mask, they will be escorted out,” Eyre confirmed.Plexiglas was also used in last Saturday's US Senate debate between Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Jamie Garrison. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — A Delta Airlines flight from Detroit, Michigan to West Palm Beach, Florida has landed safely after blowing a tire.Delta flight 1930 departed Detroit Metro Airport at 8:30 a.m. and landed at Palm Beach International Airport just after 11 a.m. Eastern.An airport spokesperson told WXYZ in Detroit that crews responded to a level two alert, which indicated a mechanical malfunction of some kind.Video shows the plane taxied safely to the gate where it was surrounded by emergency vehicles.No one was injured.
