As our country works to rebound, companies are managing the pressure of keeping workplaces safe.Employers are taking precautions ahead of Thanksgiving with concerns about the coronavirus spreading over the holiday.Companies are doing everything from issuing memos, reminding workers about the public health guidance on gatherings and travel, to asking workers to sign pledges they'll keep gatherings small.But there are limits to how much say your boss has on what you're doing outside of work.“They are allowed to inquire about what their travel plans might be, what their off-duty conduct might be and they can ask employees to disclose that information,” said Christine Lamb, an employment attorney with Fortis Law Partners.Lamb says many states prevent employers from discriminating against workers who are doing things outside of work that are lawful.But if you aren't following policies your work put in place for COVID-19, they can ask you to go through some type of coaching or counseling.Lamb advises companies against checking in on their workers on social media.“You might have an employee who is at a gathering of 50 people and they're not posting anything on social media. The employer might not know what's going on and another employee that posts a photograph of them with 10 people on social media, there's just a risk of that unequal application of the rules,” said Lamb.She says one thing employers should be thinking about now is what does next week look like for the company post-Thanksgiving. That includes having a plan for people to work from home if that's possible.One drug maker told the Wall Street Journal that it's offering workers a paid 2-week quarantine if they need it after the holiday, where they'll be expected to work from home. 1773

AUSTIN, Texas -- Valarie Allman has been throwing discus for 10 years.“When you throw a discus it takes about two seconds, and it’s a combination of power, of grace, of strength… I like to think of it as a dance still," Allman said.She started sophomore year of high school. But it’s her dance background that she credits for her quick progression in the sport.“I had a weird knack for it," Allman said. "I think all those years of learning choreography and spinning and doing pirouettes weirdly carried over to the discus, and it kind of just seemed like a good fit right from the start.”Multiple days every week, she trains hard in the gym guided by her coach Zebulon Sion.“I’m responsible for every facet of her training," Sion said. "So that includes the strength-training concepts, if we do any type of running, fitness oriented things, plyometrics, and then of course the actual throwing.”Their chemistry is undeniable.At only 25 years old, Allman is considered a pro athlete. Her rigorous training is fueled by her desire to be a part of the next Olympics.“When I graduated college, I think that was the motivation to keep training. I missed the team in 2016 by three feet and it was kind of in that moment that I realized that I really wanted to try again,” Allman said.Consistency, discipline, attention to detail. Allman’s focus didn’t falter until she found out the 2020 Olympics had to be postponed.“It was pretty heartbreaking," Allman said. "I mean, to feel like you’ve put in so much to be prepared for it and to be healthy and to do everything right to feel like you’d have a chance to make the team and then for it to be postponed I think it kind of just made me question everything.”“Her motivation to throw kind of was gone a bit for her for a while," Sion said. "And then we kind of got to a point after a month, month-and-a-half of training going well in terms of lifting and training -- our goal was to get fit, get strong and refine the technical model that she has to get to a point where we could be at our best if that opportunity would come.”That opportunity did come. On August 1st in Rathdrum, Idaho, Allman beat the Women's Discus American Record.“I threw 70 meters and 15 centimeters, and the previous record was 69 meters and 17 centimeters.”The three-foot difference that kept her from qualifying for the Olympics in 2016 is the difference she surpassed to become the first and only American woman to throw past 70 meters.“When you’re throwing that type of distance, three feet is significant. So to break it by almost three feet was huge actually,” Sion said.“When they measured the throw and they read out the numbers and it started with a seven I instantly burst into tears. I was absolutely shocked,” Allman said.Allman says 70 meters is the ultimate barrier. In the past 20 years, only two other women in the world have thrown past 70 meters.“Now looking back it’s wild the think it was just a sliver of a difference of giving up when we were on the brink of something incredible,” Allman said.“We could have called it we could have said 2020 is a bust ya know let’s move on," Sion said. "But the amount of time, energy, effort all the things to put in over five months of uncertainty and then for that to happen – I don’t know if I could be more proud.”The same day of her record-breaking throw was the exact day she would have been competing in Tokyo had the Olympics continued. However, with her dedication to improvement, Sion believes there’s a great future ahead of Allman.“I mean I think the goal is just to throw farther and to keep throwing far more often. At least 18 people have been killed and 178 others injured after a train derailed in Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan, according to an update from the island's transport ministry.Initially, the ministry said 22 people died, but it later revised the number.The train was traveling between the cities of Shulin and Taitung when it derailed Sunday on a coastal line reportedly popular with tourists.The train was carrying 366 passengers when the accident occurred just before 5 pm local time, the transport ministry said. 529

ASHLAND, Ore. -- In the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, you’ll find rows upon rows of vineyards. Rob Folin is the winemaker at Belle Fiore in Ashland.Although the grapes are different, the dry climate is similar to Napa Valley, making it very ideal conditions for wine-making. However, just like other crops, the weather can have a huge impact on wine grapes. As a winemaker, Folin says he needs to know what his vineyards are facing and how to handle what Mother Nature throws at him.“Rain, snow, frost, smoke, fire, we’ve got it all,” Folin said.In the summertime, it can be clear one day and smoky the next.“Right during harvest or right before is when it’s the worst time to have smoke – which would be right now,” Folin said.Harvest season in southern Oregon typically starts in mid-September and goes until mid-October. Folin says one of the stressors for a winemaker is smoke taint. That’s when smoke gets trapped in the skin of the grapes giving them a campfire aroma and ashy texture. It’s a flavor very few people enjoy.“If your vineyard had a fire right next to it and you just had solid smoke coming in there, then you can really have this barbecue or campfire kind of aroma,” Folin said.Unless you send your grapes in somewhere to get tested, Folin says there’s no way to know your grapes have smoke taint until they go through fermentation. He says whether a grape is impacted or not depends on a lot of factors, and it’s very unpredictable.“Our vineyard here could be totally fine, and the one across the street, their resulting wines could be smoky, like it’s just how the wind goes, the intensity of the smoke, how long it was there, how close it was, did it settle overnight.”When it comes down to it, there’s only so much you can control. As of right now, not much can be done to prevent smoke taint, and smoky summers in the western U.S. seems to be the norm lately.Folin says winemakers that face a lot of smoke taint can make more white wines since white wines are fermented without the grape skin. Or they can market their wines to consumers as a smoky wine for those that like the taste. At the end of the day, Folin says winemakers have to go with the flow.“Just roll with it," Folin said. "Ya know, fix what you can. If you can’t do anything about it, what can you do? Do what you can do and move forward.”With the exception of one fire near the vineyard in the past month, Folin says it’s been a very great year for his vineyard. He’s hopeful something good can come out of 2020 after all.“With all the stuff that’s going on, maybe we’ll have the best grapes this year. I don’t know. Just going to count on that.” 2649

Authorities in Texas say a partially-dressed woman who was captured on a home surveillance system ringing a doorbell early one morning is safe after officials discovered her boyfriend died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.According to ABC News, five days after the 32-year-old woman was recorded on a Ring doorbell’s surveillance camera, the woman was located and is reportedly safe, police said.The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday they responded to a home in the Sunrise Ranch subdivision after receiving reports of a 49-year-old man threatening to kill himself.Deputies attempted to knock on the door multiple times before making forced entry into the home, officials said. When they made their way inside, they discovered the man lying dead of a single gunshot wound.Authorities tell local news outlets they believe his death is a suicide.The man left a note and mentioned his girlfriend but police say she was not at the scene by the time officers arrived. The woman was later identified as the person ringing a stranger's doorbell early in the morning.Last Friday, the woman was seen ringing a doorbell in the neighborhood north of Houston around 3:20 a.m., the MCSO said. The woman left the home before the resident answered the door.The eerie video of the woman was widely shared on the Internet as people on social media feared the woman — who was seen only wearing a T-shirt and broken hand restraints — was in danger. Authorities aren’t releasing any information about the woman because she is a victim of domestic violence.
