On the Walton farm near Iowa City, Iowa, this year’s soybean crop is as good as it gets. But out here, most days are not easy, but Dave Walton finds the good in most days. That optimism could be why the Walton family has been on the farm so long.Walton is a sixth-generation soybean farmer in Iowa."I've got two sons that would like to farm, too,” says Walton.Walton says, perhaps more now than ever, there’s much anxiety about the future."We were already looking at lower profits, and this tariff issue has made it even worse."Of the 900 acres on the Walton's farm, 300 acres are for soybeans."We sell most of our soybeans to a river terminal," says Walton. The soybeans are then loaded onto a barge on the Mississippi, shipped down river and eventually arrive in China, where a growing middle class has an insatiable appetite for all things soy. "They use it mainly for animal feed, and also, they crush the oil out of it and use it for cooking," says Walton.Soybeans are by far the number one food and beverage export of the United States, bringing in billion a year. So, when the White House announced 25 percent tariffs on some Chinese imports, China struck back, placing a 25 percent tariff on U.S. grown soybeans in retaliation."Using soybeans as a negotiating tool is something the Chinese understood,” says Walton. “They knew that that's one of our largest exports, so it made sense for them to target soybeans."As a result of that, and other instabilities in the market, the price of soybeans has tumbled.“It's not fun to be a pawn in this," expresses Walton. It's not just exports like soybeans feeling the pain of the tariffs. Just across the river from Iowa in Moline, Illinois is home to John Deere. The farming equipment maker says if tariffs on steel imports cost more to make its iconic green and yellow machinery, it'll charge more.John Deere says it's determined to protect profits, which topped billion in the second quarter alone this year. It is cranking out equipment at a dizzying pace, with sales up 34 percent over last year. Those rising equipment costs also hit farmers.Walton says he doesn’t blame the president alone.“There's a bunch of moving pieces in trade."There was already somewhat of a restriction for U.S. beans going into China." Walton is now working other world markets to find a solution. He just returned from Europe, where there's a growing demand for soy as well."I would say my mindset has always been outside my own farm gate," Walton says. 2512

ORLANDO, Fla. - A baby born at 22 weeks and weighing just 12 ounces is going home after spending six months at the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.Doctors said in a press release that baby Diana Peguero is the tiniest baby to ever survive and graduate from the hospital's NICU. Today, she weighs over 7 pounds and is currently thriving at home.According to the Orlando Sentinel, Diana's mother, Jomary Tavarez, was starting to dilate when she went in for a routine checkup in April at 20 weeks pregnant.Doctors then admitted Jomary to Winnie Palmer, and on Mother's Day, Diana was born weighing 12 ounces and was nine inches long. However, after examining her size and development, doctors believe Diana was younger than 22 weeks since gestational age is just an estimate. From May 10 to Nov. 6, Diana spent her first six months of her life in the hospital's NICU, but doctors said she never needed any life-saving surgeries.A few days after giving birth to Diana, doctors discharged Tavarez from the hospital, the newspaper reported. For six months, the couple traveled from their home in Ocala, Florida, to the hospital to see their daughter.According to the newspaper, doctors initially told Tavarez and her husband Federico that most babies, Diana's size, didn't survive the first three days, which Diana did.Diana's medical team continued to set more goals for Diana, which she continued to pass, the newspaper reported.By the end of June, her parents could carry her for the first time. In July, they got to hold her, the paper reported.Diana's parents are thrilled to finally take their first and only child home, especially for Federico, with her coming home a day after his birthday."It's a bittersweet day for us in the NICU," said Dr. Thais Queliz, a neonatologist at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. "We're sad to see Diana leave since she and her parents have been with us for so long. But we're so proud of how far she's come and are happy for them to start their lives at home as a family of three."Diana is one of only 10 babies in the world recorded to have survived at her size and gestational age. 2148

Not many people are wearing formal clothes to work, as a lot of people are still working from home. With not many businesses enforcing a dress code at home, the company Coupon Follow decided to see just how casual people were getting. "For this survey we actually surveyed over 1,000 people that had previously been sitting in an office almost every day working and now, of course, are no longer working at the office. They're all working from home. And it was a broad range of ages from 30s to 70s from all over the country and from a wide range of industries," said Michael Parrish DuDell, Coupon Follow's Chief Strategy Officer.DuDell says the idea was to get a snapshot of how people are dressing these days, how much money they're spending on clothes and what they like to wear. Coupon Follow connects customers with shopping deals around the country. Their survey found one possibly surprising result."We did find that 29 percent of workers work naked when working from home. Did that surprise me? That’s probably one of the words I would associate with my response to that. No, it didn’t surprise me. I think what surprised me is that people were so honest about the fact that they were working naked while working from home. I imagine that people weren’t working the full day naked. My guess is that there were some experiences where perhaps they had to and they answered the question with that in mind," said DuDell. The survey also showed the most popular work-from-home outfit was either loungewear or athletic wear. For the most part, people are really enjoying wearing a more casual wardrobe day to day. So much so, that 28 percent of respondents said they're willing to take a pay cut in order to keep the casual dress code going once they're back in the office."And that pay cut ranges about 15 percent in the dollar amount, was just north of ,000 dollars. So, between ,000-1,100 dollars people were willing to sacrifice in order to work in a place that didn’t require them to wear that button-up suit and tie," said DuDell.Lisa Frydenlund, an HR Knowledge Advisor with the Society for Human Resources Management, has some advice for people wanting to talk to their boss about a more casual dress code. "I always feel like if you have an idea and you want to bring it forward, first figure out who best to bring it forward to or what department to do so. Then, come with an idea, something you know will be heard in a sense that does it fit? Walking in with something totally crazy, you’re almost going in with the knowledge that it's not going to work. So, going with a plan," said Frydenlund. She says while some employers have still enforced a dress code policy for their employees working from home, many have relaxed those rules."I think it makes sense, especially in the world that we’re living in today considering that there’s a lot of challenges. So, being more comfortable in our current surroundings and most of us are at home, feels like one less thing to worry about," said Frydenlund. Frydenlund says many employers will have to re-establish their pre-COVID dress code rules once they welcome people back to the office."In general, I think people are asking themselves a really important question, which is, if I am doing something at my office - whether it's putting on a button-down shirt or whether it's doing work that can be done from home, they're thinking about that question. Is there a way to revise this to make it more relevant to the life and world that we live in now?" said DuDell. As for whether the casual theme will continue once people are back in the office, DuDell says it could depend on the type of business, but it will certainly be a topic of conversation going forward. 3734
