IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay family is mourning the death of a popular airport worker to COVID-19.Ana Carina's first symptoms were a sore throat and a cough. Days later, in late July, she couldn't catch her breath."She says she felt she like had asthma. That's when we got concerned," said daughter Karen Miraflores.She says family members brought her mother to an ER, where she was quickly admitted, testing positive for COVID-19. A week later, she was placed in a ventilator."I got scared, became uncomfortable and uneasy," said her daughter.After a month on the ventilator, Carina actually tested negative for COVID-19, but her lungs were too badly damaged. This past Sunday, Carina, a mother of three adult children, passed away at the age of 56."We were all wishing this was just a dream. She was the sweetest. She would call us randomly just to tell her she loved us," said Karen."I just miss her so much. She was so nice and selfless," said Carina's son Luis Miraflores, choking back tears.For nearly a decade, Carina worked at the airport in customer service for an airline, well-liked by co-workers and passengers."Her legacy lives on in the people that she touched," said Karen.Her family can't figure out how she contracted coronavirus. Her hours at work had been greatly reduced. She lived with her children, and they all kept close to their Imperial Beach home. When she did go out, she carried a bag of safety supplies."A Ziploc bag that had santizies, gloves, extra masks," said Karen.In the end, Carina would contract a virus that killed her, despite having no pre-existing conditions."My message is that this is real," said Luis.Luis says he is frustrated when he sees people not wearing masks and not social distancing."Please wear masks. We can’t take a look between that wall," said Donny Williams, the Director of Business Development and Marketing for All Atlanta AmeriSpec.Overall, he doesn't recommend buying a home without going inside it first, but he and many other inspectors at his company are seeing it more often now. "I was actually surprised the number of times it actually happened. The guys could remember seven to 15 times each. Times that by 18 guys and that's a lot," said Williams.Before the pandemic, Williams says he rarely would see people purchase homes sight unseen. But as long as contracting the coronavirus is a concern, home buying virtually could be here to stay. There’s several laws and regulations around what a real estate professional can share and information they can give on a neighborhood. So, a lot of times that's always up to the consumer, anyways, right, to get a good feel for the neighborhood or understand the dynamics or school or surrounding area," said Lewis.Overall, make sure before you swipe right to buy a home, meet it first, if at all possible. In an election year in the middle of a global coronavirus pandemic, a new study finds the majority of Americans, about 80 percent, are confident in-person polling places will be run safely.Survey respondents also seem to agree that it is important for Americans to learn who won the election within a day or two of Election Day, about 82 percent, but only about 50 percent feel confident this will actually happen.Other questions asked on a recent Pew Research Center study appear to have strong partisan divisions.When it comes to being confident about in-person versus mail-in ballots being counted, overall 90 percent of respondents feel good about in-person ballots being counted as voters intended.The confidence in mail-in ballots being counted as voters intended differs; just 37 percent of those who support President Donald Trump say they are confident in mail-in ballots, compared to 77 percent of those who support Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.These feelings lead to a 30-point difference in which supporters are planning to cast their ballot in person on Election Day; 50 percent of Trump supporters say they will vote in-person, while just 20 percent of Biden supporters say they will.Roughly 20 percent of both Trump supporters and Biden supporters reported they had already voted or planned to vote in-person during their state’s early voting.The sides also differ on their feelings about how Election Day will be administered around the country.
