Parents deported from the US while their children were left behind is what experts think has happened to hundreds of families.A court-appointed steering committee began trying to reach the families of more than 1,000 migrant children two years ago.That's after a federal court ordered the reunification of many families that had been separated at the border under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy in 2018.According to a court filing Tuesday, the committee has been unable to reach the parents of 545 children.It believes most of them were deported without their children, and those children are still in the US with a sponsor.The Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union are leading the effort to locate the parents.The ACLU points out some of the children were babies when they were taken away from their families. 858

PHOENIX (AP) — Joe Arpaio has been narrowly defeated in his bid to win back the sheriff’s post in metro Phoenix that he held for 24 years before being voted out in 2016. Arpaio on Friday lost the Republican primary to his former top aide, Jerry Sheridan. Sheridan will face the Democrat who previously defeated Arpaio, Paul Penzone, in the November general election. Arpaio also ran an unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign in 2018, not long after President Donald Trump pardoned his criminal conviction for disobeying a judge’s order. Paleontologists have discovered a new species of dinosaur in Asia.The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences says two “perfectly preserved” fossils were found in the Lujiatun Beds in the Liaoning Province of northeastern China.The intact fossils suggest that the burrowing dinosaurs were trapped by a volcanic eruption while resting at the bottom of their burrows, according to the institute. Some paleontologists believe the dinosaurs were victims of a gigantic volcanic eruption."These animals were quickly covered by fine sediment while they were still alive or just after their death," said paleontologist Pascal GodefroitThe institute says the Lujiatun Beds would have been a kind of Cretaceous “Pompeii.”Fittingly, the new species has been named Changmiania liaoningensis, with Changmian meaning “eternal sleep” in Chinese.Paleontologists estimate these newly discovered dinosaurs roamed the earth about 125 million years ago.The institute says they were small, herbivorous, bipedal dinosaurs, about 1.2 meters long. With very powerful hind legs and long, stiff tail, paleontologists believe they were particularly fast runners.“However, certain characteristics of the skeleton suggest that Changmiania could dig burrows, much like rabbits do today,” said Godefroit. “Its neck and forearms are very short but robust, its shoulder blades are characteristic of burrowing vertebrates and the top of its snout is shaped like a shovel. So, we believe that both Changmiania specimens were trapped by the volcanic eruption when they were resting at the bottom of their burrows 125 million years ago.” 1612

But there's a company, referred as the Airbnb of cars, that claims to help you make and save money.The California-based company Turo is a peer-to-peer carsharing service. Christie and her husband heard about the online car rental service two years ago. With having to care for three children, they decided it was time to make some extra cash, so they posted their car for rent on Turo. "It's really just posting pictures of your car, and they set you up with a photographer if you want professional pictures done of your car," explains Christie.Depending on how new and nice your vehicle is, Christie says Turo allows you to price your car accordingly. Her Jeep Wrangler rents for 9 a day. At first, Christie says they raked in about 0 a month, which was just enough to pay the car payment. But as they got more reviews from renters, they were making enough to supplement an income. "I would say our profit, 0 at least," says Christie. "During the summer months, it can be up to ,400 in profit."Making that kind of money is great. But, Christie says there are a few sacrifices you have to be willing to make. "If somebody books last minute, it's kind of being able to rearrange my schedule to be able to meet them."A majority of the time, Christie has to drive 30 minutes to the airport to drop the car off with the renter at the airport. Another downside: a lot of miles have been put on her car. She says in just two years, renters have put 51,000 miles on her Jeep. Not only does Christie rent out her car, but she has actually rented a car through Turo while on vacation in Saint Louis. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Helvetica}span.s1 {font-kerning: none}San Diego law enforcement officers are tapping into a nationwide database that uses a bullet's ‘fingerprint' to track crimes.The distinct markings left on a shell casing after it's fired provide an image that can be traced back to the gun from which the bullet was shot.There's an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives technology called National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or NIBIN.The national digital database houses 3.3 million images of casings left at crime scenes all over the country.San Diego County, state and federal agencies can enter a casing and find out within 24 hours if there's a match in the system."We're catching the fingerprint from the firearm," said ATF Intelligence Specialist Tom Chimileski.If they get a hit, those identical spent shell casings have linked two different crimes to the same gun.ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice, who works with local police and Sheriff's units in San Diego County, calls the sharing of ballistic information "a game changer."Rice works with Escondido Police Gang Unit Detective Nicholas Rodelo on gun crime cases. They took 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt to the scene of a March 2016 murder case in Escondido.Surveillance video caught the car in an alley off Escondido Blvd. creeping toward the street, as the shooter stalked a rival gang member.After the shooter got out of his car and gunned down the man in the middle of a busy street, there were 12 shell casings left at the scene.The casings were collected and put into the NIBIN system.In the 24-hour window before the digital search could reveal a lead, the pair got a tip on where the gun could be. They recovered it and found the serial number was obliterated.Rice and Rodelo went to San Diego Sheriff's Department Criminologist Scott Hoopes for his expertise in serial restoration.Hoopes told 10News the metal underneath the serial number still reacts to certain acids. Even though it's completely smooth on the surface, Hoopes can sometimes manipulate the acid reactions and bring the number back. That's what Hoopes did with the gun.These technologies are putting a bull's eye on the bad guys. The NIBIN system's images have led to 110,000 hits giving investigators a wealth of knowledge from seemingly unrelated crimes, sometimes from the other side of the country, now connected by a firearm."Jurisdictions can't talk to each other but within our NIBIN system we're able to figure that out," said ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice.These hits allow investigators to get surveillance video, the makes of cars, license plates, or other pieces of evidence from one scene and use it in the other cases involving that same gun.That gets law enforcement much closer to finding the shooter and making the arrest.  See Kimberly Hunt's full report: 2873
