BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government encourages Chinese businesses to set up economic and trade cooperation zones in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deepen cooperation, a senior commerce official said Wednesday.Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, speaking at a preparatory meeting for the seventh China-ASEAN Expo, said China and ASEAN members have strengthened economic and trade cooperation since the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) came into effect on Jan. 1 this year.Customs data showed that bilateral trade totalled 39.12 billion U.S. dollars in the first two months of 2009, up 66 percent from a year ago.Chinese exports to ASEAN states rose 52.9 percent to 18.69 billion U.S. dollars while imports from ASEAN jumped 80.2 percent to 20.43 billion U.S. dollars.Gao called upon "eligible" Chinese enterprises to "go overseas" to ASEAN countries to set up economic and trade zones with infrastructure and industrial chains. He also said the two sides should implement the agreement on trade and expand trade, calling for an increase in the trade of high value-added products, including mechanical and electrical products and other hi-tech products. The two sides' enterprises should further expand cooperation and deepening ties in the agricultural, manufacturing, infrastructure, resources, and processing sectors, he said. The CAFTA, covering a population of about 1.9 billion, is the world's third largest trade agreement in terms of trade volume, after the European Union and the North American Free Trade Area. The ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.Under the CAFTA, the average tariff on goods from ASEAN countries entering China has been cut to 0.1 percent from 9.8 percent, while the six original ASEAN members - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - slashed the average tariff on Chinese goods entering ASEAN states from 12.8 percent to 0.6 percent. The seventh China-ASEAN Expo will be held in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Oct. 20 to 24 this year.

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China initiated a level-four emergency response on Friday to cope with the chaos caused by storms sweeping its southern provinces.Heavy rain has poured down in south China since Wednesday, including provinces of Guangdong, Sichuan and Guizhou, causing floods, mountain torrents and mud flows, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement on its website. As of Friday, the storms had affected up to 2.55 million people and 100,000 hectares of arable land, leaving 65 people dead, 14 missing.  Villagers receive relief materials in Tianxin Village, Egong Town of Dingnan County in east China's Jiangxi Province, May 7, 2010. Seven people were dead and five were missing after floods and landslides wreaked havoc in Jiangxi over the past two daysThe office has ordered local authorities to closely monitor the development of the rainstorms, prevent weather-triggered disasters like floods and landslides and provide early warnings. The office has also dispatched working teams to storm-hit regions to enhance storm-relief work, it said.

BEIJING ,May 6 -- China Mobile on Wednesday launched an online platform that enables its subscribers to read and download digital publications through cell phones and e-book readers, as part of its effort to profit from the country's emerging mobile reading market. The world's biggest cellphone carrier in terms of subscribers kicked off an e-book store similar to Apple's iBook store, which gives users wireless access to a series of online publications such as e-books, comics and magazines."Reading habits have fundamentally changed," said Gao Nianshu, general manager of China Mobile's data department. He said the company hopes the new platform will attract over 200 million users in the near future. Primary school students in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, read e-books. China Mobile hopes its newly launched platform will attract over 200 million users in the near future.According to figures from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, cellphone users in the country reached 780 million at the end of March. Of that group, mobile readers surpassed 155 million, the ministry said.Interest in e-book readers made by firms such as Hanwang Technology, Amazon and Founder since last year also significantly boosted demand for mobile reading.Gao said China Mobile's new e-book platform, which currently covers about 40 percent of the best selling books in the country, has attracted over 15 million users during four months of testing in eight areas. He said the company's online e-book store will also support the iPad, the tablet computer launched by Apple Inc last month."Mobile reading has become a popular service with mobile Internet users in China," said Zhang Yanan, analyst from research firm Analysys International, in a research note. But he said that although about 45 percent of Chinese mobile Internet users read books at least once a day by mobile phone, few of them are willing to pay for online content.According to China Mobile, the subscription fee for its online e-book store is up to five yuan per month, 40 percent of which will be shared with copyright owners.Zhong Tianhua, head of China Mobile's subsidiary in Zhejiang province, who oversees the company's online e-book store business, said the company's strategy is to attract as many users as possible in the first three years with the lowest pricing possible.Companies including Nokia, Motorola, Hanwang, Founder, Datang and Huawei Technologies have released products that support China Mobile's new service. But many e-book makers have also established their own online e-book stores, putting them in competition with China Mobile. It was reported earlier this week that China Mobile plans to team up with Foxconn Electronics of Taiwan province to produce its own e-book readers.

BEIJING, May 28 (Xinhua) -- As a bilateral agreement, the Japan-U.S. Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security should not harm the interests of China and other third parities, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu here Friday.Ma made the remarks in response to a question about Japan's latest claim over the Diaoyu Islands in a news report.According to the report, Japan said on Thursday the Diaoyu Islands were a part of Japan and the U.S. would be obligated according to the treaty to engage in military conflicts between China and Japan over the island should they occur.Ma said China has indisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Island and adjacent islets, which have been an inalienable part of China's territory since ancient times.
