SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 3,252 COVID-19 infections today, while virus-related hospitalizations continued to increase as the first batch of Moderna vaccines arrived in the area.The number of daily infections reported Monday marked the third- highest daily increase since the pandemic began, following only Friday's 3,611 and Saturday's 3,493. Together with Wednesday's 2,807 cases and Thursday's 2,604, the top five-highest daily case counts have all occurred in the past week.Monday's total also marked the third time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 and the 21st consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. It was also the 14th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The new cases gave the county a cumulative total of 129,717 confirmed cases from throughout the pandemic. The county also announced three more COVID-related deaths, raising the overall death toll to 1,283.Another 32 people were hospitalized as of Monday, with one additional person sent to an intensive care unit. A total of 1,296 people were hospitalized due to the virus, with 334 of those in ICUs -- both records.A drop of 43 non-COVID patients in the region's ICU freed up space Monday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of carjacking another man on a Bay Terraces street.The victim was sitting in his 2018 Kia Forte around 9:55 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Manzana Way, near the Hillsborough Recreation Center, when a white van pulled up alongside him, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man got out of the van and told him he wanted the car, then the victim -- assuming the man had a weapon -- got out of his car, Buttle said.Another person driving the van sped away, followed by the thief in the victim's Kia, which had California license plate 8BCW102, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County schools are allowed to reopen for in-person teaching starting Tuesday, a day after a flurry of businesses throughout the county resumed indoor operations.Tuesday marks two weeks since San Diego County was removed from the state's COVID-19 watch list and nearly three weeks that the county's case rate has remained under 100 cases per 100,000 people.Remaining below that metric has paved the way for K-12 schools to reopen for in-person teaching, but many districts are expected to take a cautious approach to reopening.Schools that choose to reopen must follow state guidance, including mandatory face covering usage for students in third grade through high school, increased cleaning and disinfecting practices and implementing a six-foot distance requirement, where possible, in classrooms and non-classroom spaces.On Monday, San Diego County businesses including movie theaters, gyms, museums and hair and nail salons resumed indoor operations, with modifications, under newly issued state guidance. Restaurants, places of worship and movie theaters are only allowed up to 25% occupancy or 100 people -- whichever is less. Museums, zoos and aquariums are also required not to exceed 25% occupancy.Monday night, the county implemented a new policy that restaurant patrons sitting indoors must wear masks at all times, except when eating or drinking. Outdoor patrons may still remove masks while not consuming food or beverages.Gyms, dance studios, yoga studios and fitness centers may operate with 10% occupancy. Hair salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, piercing shops, skin care and cosmetology services and nail salons may operate indoors with normal capacity, but a new policy states they must keep an appointment book with names and contact information for customers to track potential future outbreaks.San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox thanked San Diegans for working hard to bring the case rate down but offered a word of caution on Monday."This is not a green light, this is a yellow light," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California State University Board of Trustees announced the appointment Wednesday of Ellen Neufeldt as president of the San Marcos campus.Neufeldt will become the university's fourth president when she takes over in July. She is currently the vice president of student engagement and enrollment services at Old Dominion University in Virginia.CSU officials had searched for and interviewed candidates for the Cal State San Marcos presidency since November."Dr. Neufeldt has been a visionary leader who has demonstrated a commitment to student success throughout her career," said CSU Trustee and search committee chair Jean Picker Firstenberg. "She brings a wealth of experience, and will serve as an inspirational leader on the campus and in the community."Current CSUSM President Karen Haynes announced last September that she plans to retire in June. Haynes, will leave office as the longest-tenured president in the university's history, helped increase the school's population from 7,000 in 2004 to the current 17,000 and added 15 new buildings and more than 100 academic programs.Neufeldt has held her current role at Old Dominion since 2011, overseeing government relations and marketing and public relations in addition to student engagement and enrollment services. Prior to joining Old Dominion, she also served as the vice president of student affairs at Salisbury University and assistant vice chancellor for student development at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.Neufeldt said she was looking forward to her new post."There has been remarkable growth both on the campus and in the local community and the opportunity for additional growth still remains," Neufeldt said.
