SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students distracted and bitten in class at Madison Senior High in Clairemont are hoping for some help to make the mosquitoes go away.The west side of campus, against Doliva Dr., is where people told 10News they were bitten. The same area houses special needs classes. 10News was sent two pictures, one of a student, with special needs, whose calf was bitten by a mosquito, and another of a dead mosquito. It appears to be black with white spots or stripes."It was really bad and it was burning and everything," Junior Arryonna said. She was bitten in art class Thursday."I feel like my ankle starts itching so I'm like what's on my ankle, so I look and I got two bumps on the side of my ankle," she said reaching down to scratch. She said she's allergic, making the bites that much worse.The school district says the first report of a mosquito bite came mid-September, around the first time Aryonna said she was bit. Pest Control came out twice and deployed an organic compound in the drain to kill mosquito larvae. The County was scheduled to come out next week, but after 10News called, they showed up Friday afternoon, according to the district. 1176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the heads of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for the reinstatement of the “Safe Release” program and reimbursement for the cost of treating a recent influx of asylum seekers. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost are named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims the county has been harmed as a result of what it describes as a “sudden and unlawful change” in policy, releasing asylum-seeking migrants from federal detention into the county while “denying them previously-provided assistance in reaching their final destination(s) outside the County.” RELATED: Reaction: County of San Diego sues federal agency chiefs over asylum seeker careFrom 2009 to October 2018, ICE implemented a policy described in the lawsuit as “Safe Release”, which provided asylum seekers assistance in reaching final destinations outside San Diego, attorneys say. The lawsuit claims some 40 asylum seekers and family members were dropped off at a San Diego bus station within 24 hours after the end of Safe Release. County attorneys say since then, as many as 80 parents and young children have been released into San Diego County each day. County attorneys wrote the vast majority of asylum seekers and family members must remain in the area without sufficient means to support themselves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Hillcrest Business Association is making some changes to the Pride kickoff party this year they hope will make the event more inclusive. According to Benjamin Nicholls, the association’s Executive Director, entry to the event won’t be limited to those 21 and up this year. “We just felt it was a little odd to say ‘oh under 21 you can’t come,’ so we took down the fences and made it all ages,” Benjamin said. On top of taking down the fence that normally surrounds the event, entry will also be donation based. “What we want to do is we want to take down the barriers to entry and that means physically taking down the fences and also charging nothing for folks to get in,” Nicholls added. Nicholls says he hopes the changes will get more people involved. Pride this year will be held on July 12, 13 and 14. 840
