It’s been a month since both of you went home to Paradise to be with Jesus. I spend most of my time imagining what both of you are seeing and experiencing. As my tears fall, I remind myself of what the apostle Paul said in first Thessalonians 4:13-14 NIV “Brothers and sisters we do not want you to be on uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him”. For me this is not the end but only a brief interruption. One day soon we will have a magnificent reunion and all of us will be with the Lord forever. Until then I will press on to the ultimate goal of spending eternity in Heaven. My family and I would like to thank everyone across this country who has prayed for us and sent words of encouragement our way. On his urban farm, Sean Conway is doing more than cultivating his next crop. He's helping grow the next generation of farmers. Conway is a mentor at the GoFarm incubator program, which pairs young farmers with established ones. “I wish that there was like an incubator program available to me in the Denver area at the time, because it would have helped me out a lot,” Conway says. After seven years of farming, Conway says he struggled at first. “I didn't really have enough experience to start farming on my own, so I made a lot of mistakes,” he admits. Now, the GoFarm incubator program is making sure these apprentices don't make the same mistakes Conway did. The program is a mix of hands-on training and classroom work, creating a path to farm ownership. “Two percent of the U.S. population is actually in an agricultural career, which is pretty crazy, so trying to increase the amount of farmers we have will affect the entire community,” says Natalie Fioretti with GoFarm. Apprentice Shelby Johnson knew she wanted to be a farmer, but had no idea where to begin.“The odds are really, really stacked against young farmers in a lot of ways, and especially as a young, queer woman of color from the south, it's like quadra stacked against me,” Johnson says. Johnson says thanks to GoFarm, she has resources and opportunities to network, while learning from older farmers.There are farming training programs like GoFarm across the country. LONGMONT, Colo. — As some struggle with the decision on whether to hold a Thanksgiving celebration, a Colorado man says his family averted a worst-case scenario by canceling theirs.Shakeel Dalal’s family comes together every year from around the country for a large Thanksgiving celebration that usually lasts several days. A mandatory event that usually includes around 40 family members. “Everyone brings their own dish, one of my cousins brings the mashed potatoes, my cousin makes the green bean casserole, and it’s the progressive arrival of people when they get home hugging, everyone hugging all the kids, my parents,” Dalal said.They decided to still hold a small Thanksgiving this year with around a dozen people at his parent's home in the Midwest.But as the days grew closer and COVID-19 cases broke records, Shakeel grew uneasy.“Every morning I would wake up and think to myself, 'What is the risk like that I am going to get my parents sick?' My parents are in their 70’s,” he said.The Dalal family made the tough decision last week to cancel their plans.Then Monday, his father tested positive for COVID-19.The family narrowly avoided the kind of gathering health officials are concerned about.“We would never had known after I had already been there for three days and my sister would have been there for a day,” he said. “As much as I would like to tell myself, 'I would have been good to social distance and wear a mask the whole time,' it’s impossible.”Dalal shared his experience on social media hoping others would also take precautions.“Consider what you might regret if your family gets together, somebody gets COVID, and whether or not you get to see them next year,” he said.His father has minor symptoms and will hopefully fully recover. His mother has miraculously remained negative for the virus.He says the sacrifice they are making now will be worth it when they can all come together next year.“I am planning to make a full spread for myself. I bought a chicken, I am making rolls from scratch and I expect to spend a lot of time on Zoom and Facetime talking to my family,” Dalal said. Handmade tortillas and rice and beans are all ingredients in some of Silvia Hernandez' most beloved meals. “I'm from Mexico City, so I love tacos,” she says. “My favorite dish is the carne asada taco.” Hernandez is an immigrant and came to the U.S. a few years ago. She knew how to cook, but she wanted to turn her passion and skill and wanted to turn her traditional Mexican cooking into a business. But she had no idea where to even start.“I didn't know anything about, you know, [the] process, license, requirements,” she says. “I did not even know where offices are located.” That’s where Slavitca Park came in. Park created the Comal Heritage Food Incubator as an outreach program. It’s for low-income immigrants, who needed help to start food businesses based around the cuisines of their homelands. “Everything from understanding, how do you build a menu, how do you source food, how do you price it, what kind of licensing, permitting, you need financing,” Park explains of the education the program provides. The incubator, which acts as a learning kitchen of sorts, is packed five days a week. Here, the women create their own dishes and train with professional chefs. The program now includes refugees from Syria and Ethiopia. “I always say food is one of those things that absolutely transcends everything,” Park says. “I just really think that food is the vehicle that builds the community. Breaking breads. That's what it’s all about.” Hernandez completed the program and now has her own catering company. But she says she just can’t stay away from the program. She still works a couple shifts a week in the incubator. Park loves hearing the stories of those who complete the program."What comes out of it, it’s nothing short of pure magic,” she says. 1783
GLEN ALLEN, Va. — A Glen Allen, Virginia, family warned others to take COVID-19 seriously during the holidays after their parents died from the virus less than three weeks apart.Keene and Jessie Mendenhall said their entire family contracted COVID-19 in September after they traveled to Alabama to attend their grandmother’s funeral."Hindsight is 20/20, but going there and traveling I think was a mistake," Keene Mendenhall said. The siblings believe they were exposed to the virus at a gathering inside of a home following the funeral.“We got a little too comfortable around people,” Keene explained. “All four us got symptoms that were telling of COVID-19.” Their parents, Ed and Jane, were admitted to the hospital shortly after returning to Henrico. They said their father was reluctant to go to the hospital, but ended up calling an ambulance.“He looked at us and smiled and gave us a thumbs up and that’s the last memory I have of dad,” the siblings recalled. “At the time I didn’t know of course it was going to be the last time I saw him or that goofy smile.”Ed Mendenhall, 63, died on October 8 at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. His 66-year-old wife Jane died 20 days later at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville.“They were hard workers. Caring people. Always helped somebody in a time of need,” the siblings described. “Mom and dad both always put in extra work to make sure we had what we needed.”Ed taught music at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, and the University of Virginia. He was last employed with Virginia ABC.Jane served for more than 30 years with the Refugee and Immigration Services Department of Commonwealth Catholic Charities, helping settle families from Vietnam and Cambodia into the Greater Richmond area. She then became a Developmental Disabilities Waiver Specialist for children on the autism spectrum.“This is a tragic situation. It’s not just us. It’s the other 230,000-plus families that are dealing with the loss of a loved one,” Jessie said. “As much as you want to people with your family, as much as you want to hug and comfort them, you need to realize you got to put some boundaries between them now.”Leading health experts and state leaders have warned against gathering with your family this winter."You should take precautions around anyone who does not live in your own house, yes, even if they are your family,” Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said at his weekly COVID-19 press conference. “There’s no genetic immunity that prevents you from giving this virus to your mother, your grandfather, or anyone other loved ones in the house with you.”Northam urged families to consider outdoor celebrations, continue to socially distance, and wear face coverings.The siblings praised healthcare workers who took care of their parents and urged families to take the virus seriously.“We’ve witnessed the unfortunate and horrible strength of this virus,” Keene said. “Think of those people who have been impacted.
