This has resulted in the heroic dad being fired from both of his two jobs as a construction worker and head painter at a maintenance company, TMZ reported.Wingate said she set up the GoFundMe to help the dad with medical bills and help his kids with therapy after the traumatic experience.According the family friend, the father and his three kids were at the dealership shopping for a new vehicle to surprise his wife for her birthday.That's when shots rang out inside the Boston Road business. Three men opened fire on another man, who fired several rounds back, police said.Surveillance video shows the dad diving and huddling over the kids on the floor behind a couch. DENVER, Colo. -- When a cop receives a call about a suspect with a gun from dispatch, their mind starts racing. “You start going over tactics in your mind. You start walking through the worst-case scenario, typically, of how you’re going to respond to and handle this incident,” said Don Mihalek, a former Secret Service agent. But what if that info wasn’t quite right? The person calling 911 made a mistake. That can end in tragedy. Paul Taylor is a former police officer and officer trainer. When running simulations with officers, he noticed something that caused some concern. “One of the things that I saw is that I could drastically change use of force decision making and outcomes with small pieces of information at the front end,” said Taylor. The use of force can mean a lot of things to police, but in this case, we’re talking about firing a gun. Taylor noticed if he changed some of the information officers received in the simulations, it could change the whole outcome. So, when he moved to academics with the University of Colorado Denver, he decided to test the theory. “A person appeared on the screen with their hands in their pockets, the person matched the description from the dispatch call. And after a little bit of time, a person rapidly produced a cell phone from their pocket,” said Taylor. He ran a simulation where officers responded to a trespassing call. Sometimes, they got an update saying the suspect was on a phone or they had a gun. “The group got the gun dispatch or gun update. They shot the person more than twice as often. So, when the person produced a cell phone, they shot them 62 percent of the time,” said Taylor. That’s more than twice as often as the group that got no update. Only six percent of the officers who were told the suspect had a cell phone fired a shot. “All studies have shown that eyewitnesses tends to be the most unreliable testimony, and also you need to take into adrenaline, fear, people are trying to process this dynamic situation that they’re not used to seeing,” said Mihalek. “Unfortunately, sometimes eyewitnesses may not get things 100 percent accurate,” said April Heinze with the National Emergency Number Association. Heinze works with an advocacy group for 911 dispatchers. “The intake that’s received by the callers that are in extreme circumstances is based on their emotions and perceptions. There’s a lot of adrenaline going through your system,” said Heinze. Heinze says the 911 system is 50 years old and isn’t taking advantage of new technology that could help get officers more accurate information. “You know we’re talking about texts, and pictures, and video, and two way video and things like that,” said Heinze. Taylor doesn’t disagree that witnesses give inaccurate information. “We know that, from the time we’ve been playing tin cans or telephone as a kid, that information changes as it passes between people,” said Taylor. But Taylor doesn’t want law enforcement to rely on the public getting better at reporting crimes. Instead, he wants authorities to develop policies and procedures around the human element. That means assuming that people calling 911 are going to make mistakes and learning from your mistakes. “Where we find human error, whether that’s in aviation, nuclear power plant operation, medicine, we find an opportunity to improve, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in policing,” said Taylor.  3436

DENVER, Colo. -- Megan Fischer’s life story is one of strength and triumph. Her black belt in taekwondo is proof of her ability to persevere when mind and body are pushed to their limits. It’s a challenge she chooses to take part in. However, there was a time about 15 years ago when she had to overcome a challenge that wasn't planned. “In June of 2001, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was explained to me as being roughly the size of an average-sized human fist. So relatively large in the head of a 6-year-old,” Megan Fischer said. Fischer is a childhood cancer survivor. “I remember just kind of a lot of times feeling like ‘why I am I here, why am I in this situation where I’m being hurt.'” After a surgery to remove the tumor, Fischer underwent chemotherapy for 11 months. It made her very sick. But it worked, and a couple years later, Fischer was cancer free. “Now I just kind of try and advocate for other kids with cancer, and kind of help them through.” Fischer is hoping to raise awareness of the shortage of the chemo drug Vincristine. It was part of her treatment many years ago. “I don’t know if it was the reason why I was able to have so much success in my tumor disappearing, but I definitely know that the side effects of Vincristine are pretty terrible. So I don’t think that my doctors would have put me on it if they didn’t think it was going to play a role in my chemotherapy treatments,” Fischer said. Dr. Lia Gore is the Chief of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She says Vincristine is the backbone of many chemotherapy regimens used. “It is actually a critical element of therapy for leukemia, for some childhood brain tumors, for several other kinds of cancers,” Dr. Gore said. She says there are two primary companies that produce Vincristine, and one recently decided to stop supplying the drug. Dr. Gore says hospitals were given very little warning. “Teva [Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.] which was a very large supplier – large volume supplier – just decided to stop making this drug. They cited a ‘business decision.’” Dr. Gore says a drug as common and basic as Vincristine isn’t as profitable. The other company, Pfizer, has stated it'’s planning to 2265

TAMPA, Fla. — Three generations of one Tampa Bay family say they wound up in oncoming traffic after a blowout involving a newer tire.Steve Nelson says he purchased four new tires last November, but they had just 300 miles on them when he hit the road with his son and grandson in June. The trio left Tampa for a cross country camping trip to Yosemite in California — an adventure that took a scary turn on the drive back home.Steve said he lost control of the truck after the front driver's side tire blew out on I-40 near Gallup New Mexico. “We wound up in the oncoming lane dodging semi-trucks,” he said. Steve a retired insurance manager showed us the invoice for over 0 that he paid to replace the two front tires in New Mexico. The paperwork indicates the tires he bought new last November had about 4,200 miles on them. Normally tires don't need replacing before 30,000 miles or more.During the trip home, Steve stopped at a tire shop in Irvin, Texas and asked that they check the back tires. That Dodge dealer replaced the rear tires and wrote on the invoice that those tires had broken cords. Steve made a call for action after he says Mavis, the shop where he bought the tires, denied his claim for a refund. ABC Action News asked Chris Brazzeal, the owner of Brazzeal Tire in Tampa, to examine the original tires that came off the pickup. Chris showed us bubbling and rubber separation on two of the tires. “That is a clear indication the tire is now coming apart,” said Brazzeal. We contacted both Mavis and the tire manufacturer Vee Rubber. “Mavis is committed to providing safe and high-quality services to our customers. We have been in contact with the customer regarding this issue and have reached out to the tire manufacturer on his behalf to facilitate a resolution,” the company wrote.After we got involved a representative from Vee Rubber flew to Tampa, examined the tires and admitted one of them was defective.
