THOREAU, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico authorities say multiple people have been killed in a commercial passenger bus crash along Interstate 40.New Mexico State Police did not say how many people died or how many were injured in Thursday's crash.They said passengers were transported to a hospital and a phone number was set up for family members seeking more information about people who were aboard the bus.The wreckage included a Greyhound bus with front-end damage and a semi-truck that was on its side and with its cargo strewn across the highway and the median.Greyhound says the bus was heading from Albuquerque to Phoenix and there were 47 passengers on board.Spokeswoman Crystal Booker says it's unclear what caused the crash.The crash forced the closure of the westbound lanes of the interstate and traffic was backing up as travelers were being diverted. 866

Today would be a normal drive to work for Amelia Caceres — except her house is surrounded by police tape. Adrian Perez helped her get out, both still in shock after hearing the brand new bridge outside their home collapsed."We were some of the first people on the front,” Caceres said. “And we saw the cars crushed underneath it was really horrifying, so it was really scary.”“My mind just does not captivate that that happened,” Perez said.Caceres and Perez saw the scene unfold, in disbelief. “It’s kind of like surreal,” Perez said. “Like it was a movie. There was a woman — I guess that she was trapped in the car like under the car .. she was crying hysterically. It was just really strange.”What made it even more strange for these two is that they had just watched the bridge go up days before.“It was just up. It was done,” Caceras said. “And it seemed almost like it was amazing that they had done it so quickly.”The bridge was designed to provide a safe way for students at Florida International University, like Perez, to cross a busy highway."I was really excited about this bridge because I was like finally I won’t have to go through the death trap that is eighth street crossing," Perez said. "Now, that’s kind of ironic."Carlos Devarona lives less than a mile away, and travels the street every day.“You have a blind faith in construction,” Devarona said. “You never think something like this is going to happen.”Watching the scene left him with even more questions, specifically why officials chose to perform a stress test in the moments before the collapse. “Not above live traffic  — you don’t do that,” Devarona said. “It just should never happen.”As investigators work to answer the many questions surrounding the collapse, Perez and Caceras, like so many others, wait for answers.“I’m sure that they did what was needed to get done,” Perez said. “I don’t think anyone would do something like this purposefully. TORRANCE (CNS) - General Motors and Honda Motor Co. announced Thursday they have signed a memorandum of understanding toward establishing a North American automotive alliance.According to a jointly issued statement, the "scope of the proposed alliance includes a range of vehicles to be sold under each company's distinct brands, as well as cooperation in purchasing, research and development, and connected services."Honda, with North American headquarters in Torrance, and GM "would collaborate on a variety of segments in North America, intending to share common vehicle platforms, including both electrified and internal combustion propulsion systems that align with the vehicle platforms."Co-development planning discussions will begin immediately, with engineering work expected to begin early next year.The announcement builds on the agreement signed between the companies in April to jointly develop two all-new electric vehicles for Honda based on GM's global EV platform powered by Ultium batteries.The GM-Honda relationship, which began more than two decades ago, includes recent collaborations on fuel cells, batteries and the Cruise Origin shared autonomous vehicle."This alliance will help both companies accelerate investment in future mobility innovation by freeing up additional resources. Thomas Magnum has lost his sidekick. John Hillerman, the actor who played Magnum P.I. sidekick Jonathan Higgins, died on Thursday at the age of 84. According to TMZ, he died at his home in Houston. The cause of his death is unknown. Hillerman's portrayal of Higgins was plotted as a foil for the title character in Magnum P.I., which ran for eight seasons on CBS. Hillerman won an Emmy Award in 1987 for his performance. Besides his role on Magnum P.I., Hillerman appeared in nearly two dozen feature films, and even more television shows. This past spring, teachers from West Virginia to Oklahoma walked out of their classrooms and onto the steps of state capitols to protest low pay, overcrowded classrooms and cuts to school funding.Oklahoma teacher Jacobi Crowley was one of the teachers who participated in the strikes.“I dunno if I can be a 20 to 40-year educator,” says Crowley. “I love my job and what I do, but if things do not get better, I might have to start looking at a different career.”If things go the way he hopes this November, he will have a different career as a state senator, one who sees education as priority number 1.“We have to be fully funded,” Crowley says. “That’s the number one thing.”Crowley is one of hundreds of teachers nationwide who decided to run for public office this year. In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years.In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful.But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests.
