NEW YORK (AP) — The operator of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, the latest retailer to do so during the pandemic. Ascena Retail Group, which operates nearly 3,000 stores mostly at malls, has been dragged down by debt and weak sales for years. In a press release, the company said they were closing all of their plus-size stores Catherines.The company also said in the release that they plan to "strategically reduce its footprint with the closing of a significant number of Justice stores and a select number of Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey stores."It joins other retailers that have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, and J. Crew. These retailers were already struggling with poor sales, but the forced closure of stores in March to reduce the spread of the coronavirus put them further in peril. NEW YORK, N.Y. – It’s been nearly a year since the death of Elijah McClain in Colorado, but as people across the U.S. learn of his case, more are calling for justice.In New York City, a beautiful vigil was held on Monday to honor the life of the 23-year-old man, who played violin.A crowd of musicians with string instruments gathered in Washington Square Park to play a variety of songs, like “Amazing Grace” and “We Shall Overcome.”In videos shot by Yuxi Liu, spectators with candles can be seen crowding the Washington Square Arch, where the musicians were playing.Liu says the vigil wasn’t organized like a formal event, but that’s part of what made it so special. He says there was no rehearsal and you can even see people running up late in his video.“However, that’s exact the reason why it’s beautiful,” said Liu. “People showed up only because people care. Me and bunch of other photographers showed up because we want to help document the moment.”Elijah McClain caseThere’s been renewed interest in the Elijah McClain case after nationwide protests put a spotlight on past instances of police use of force across the country.McClain died on Aug. 24, 2019, shortly after being arrested by officers with the Aurora Police Department.KMGH reports that McClain was walking home after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store when a bystander called 911 to report “a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.” Family says McClain wore the mask because he was anemic and got cold easily.When officers tracked McClain down, police say he began “resisting.” Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state."Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. Paramedics say the procedure is common in the area.McClain later suffered a heart attack and died six days later.Now, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office is investigating whether criminal charges are warranted against anyone involved in McClain’s death.Click here for more on the McClain case. 2372

New video appears to show workers for Caltrans handing out campaign materials defending the state's recent gas tax increase while on the job. The video, shot Tuesday, was released by the Yes on 6 campaign, which is pushing to repeal the recent 12-cent-per-gallon hike on the November ballot. The video shows Yes on 6 campaign manager Matt Stockton in the drivers seat of a car. He is apparently stopped at a Caltrans contractor's site along the 78 near Ramona. The video shows a man in a hard hat approaching the window, handing Stockton what appears to be a No on 6 campaign flier defending the gas-tax increase.Stockton in the video asks the man if he is with Caltrans, and the man answers that yes, his crew is working with Caltrans. Other images released by the campaign appear to show the workers were with Pico Rivera-based Manhole Adjusting Inc., and that a Caltrans supervisor was on site. "The misuse, the abuse of taxpayer funds being used in a political campaign, it is shameful, it is outrageous, and it needs to stop right now," said Carl DeMaio, who is chair of the Yes on 6 campaign. Caltrans, a state agency, said in a statement that it is looking into the matter, and has contacted its contractors to say it does not condone political advocacy on project sites. The No on 6 campaign, fighting to keep the gas tax increase, says it was unaware of the incident and that it denounces any inappropriate use of public resources or venues for campaign purposes."The No on 6 campaign very carefully follows all rules prohibiting the use of public resources for campaigning and often reinforces those rules to anyone involved with the campaign," the campaign said in a statement. Calls to the on-site Caltrans supervisor and Manhole Adjusting Inc were not immediately returned."If this is happening on more than one occasion, it's egregious," said Seth Kaplowitz, a finance lecturer at San Diego State University. "It's egregious because they know they're not supposed to be doing it."Last year, Gov. Jerry Brown and the state legislature raised the gas tax by 12 cents-per-gallon with future increases planned. NEW YORK CITY — A man sleeping on a Harlem street was hit with fireworks and suffered burns, police said Monday after a video of the incident circulated on social media.Video shows someone lighting and throwing a firework at the man, who appears to be homeless. The firework explodes as it hits the man.Another person can be seen in the video filming the incident.An NYPD spokesperson said the department received a call at around 4 a.m. Monday near 62 Lenox Ave. (Malcolm X Boulevard) in Harlem.Officers found the man, 66, suffering from minor burns.
