"And he never went in."But, in a statement, DiRuzzo said that Israel's statement "is, at best, gross over-simplification" of what happened when a shooter killed 17 people at the Florida school.Peterson initially ran toward the 1200 building where the shooting took place, and then he "heard gunshots but believed that those gunshots were originating from outside of any of the buildings on the school campus," according to DiRuzzo.The Broward County Sheriff's Office, or BSO, "trains its officers that in the event of outdoor gunfire one is to seek cover and assess the situation in order to communicate what one observes to other law enforcement," DiRuzzo said.Peterson acted consistent with his training and "took up a tactical position between the 700-800 buildings corridor/corner," Peterson said. An Uber driver in Arizona said he pulled up to give a ride Easter morning and ended up with an AR-15 assault rifle in his face. Edward Martinez said two men called for a ride and while he waited at the curb, a third man came out of the house with no shirt and a gun. "He points it at me and says, 'call 9-1-1,"' said Martinez. Not knowing what was happening, Martinez started dialing and talking to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, and the guy with the gun went back inside. In the meantime, he said the two riders got in his car and told him not to worry about the guy with the gun. About that time, the man with the gun returned. "That's when he put a round in the chamber," said Martinez. "The [passenger] door was open... and then he had the weapon, it was about [half way] in the car, and I just took off."Martinez drove to a Quick Trip. He said his passengers tossed something out the window on the way and disappeared when he parked to wait for El Mirage police. An El Mirage officer ended up arresting the armed man, 25-year-old Nicholas Brasseur. Police searched his home and wrote in the police report that they found drugs and 25 AR-15 assault rifles.  "My profession is manufacturing AR-15s," Brasseur told the court at his initial appearance. The judge informed him that he would not be allowed to continue working with weapons or be in possession of any weapons while awaiting a resolution to the charges, which include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possessing or using a weapon during a drug offense.       Martinez said he reported the incident to Uber but has not received a followup call. "I'm missing work. Where's any concern? What can we do to help you? Do you need to see a counselor? Or any of that kind of stuff," said Martinez. Meanwhile, he says he doesn't know if he'll ever drive again. "Not today, not the next day," said Martinez. "Why would I want to put my life [at risk] and lose my life. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Department of the Interior has approved an oil and gas leasing program within Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.The refuge is home to polar bears, caribou and other wildlife.Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt signed the Record of Decision, which will determine where oil and gas leasing will take place in the refuge’s coastal plain.He said in a statement Monday it was a significant step in determining where and under what conditions oil and gas development will occur.Congress approved the program in 2017, and the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management in December 2018 concluded drilling could be conducted within the coastal plain area without harming wildlife. 716

As many head into a virtual school year, a Southern California charter school is training parents by offering classes on how they can be the best possible teachers this fall.Sage Oak, a public charter that serves eight counties in Southern California offered a no cost "virtual parent workshop" with courses like "what to do when you're teaching but the student isn't learning" and "how to support your struggling reader." Courtney Gibson, who handles marketing and communications for Sage Oak says, “This year with everything being virtual, we saw this a great opportunity to open it to our community for those who are on our waiting list or for those who are just starting distance learning in the fall and want tips and tricks on how to get their day started.”The pandemic has put a lot of focus on students and their schooling needs this fall, but Sage Oak thought, “What about the parents?”“We offer training for our teachers to start the school year and this year our teachers will go hand in hand with parents - so parents will have a role at home teaching their kids and needing strategies to keep them on track as well,” Gibson said.There's organizational tips, planning, and topics surrounding schedule implementation.“An important part of homeschool and learning at home for kids is keeping their routine that they would have in a traditional school,” Gibson said.Hundreds attended the summit, which will soon be posted on the school's website. I have a first grader who’s struggling to read so that session about how to help your struggling reader I’m excited about because I’m tired of the tears and the fights,” Case said.It's not all bad though. Case says she's looking forward to some aspect of school at home."One of the things that has been so great has been the pursuit of the things that interest them,” she said.Sage Oak's enrollment is at capacity due to a state funding cap, but they want parents everywhere to listen, watch and learn as we head into unchartered territory this year.“The fact that they care about the public and they want the public to be able to attend the summit even if they aren’t with the school it really shows the heart sage oak has for all students in education not just the ones bringing them funding,” Case said.And if you want to dive into a new type of education for your student, there's a course on that too. 3335
