SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego politicians are rallying for businesses affected by the county's move to the purple most restrictive tier.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the purple tier is taking a toll, hurting businesses that can't withstand another months-long closure.He said it could make or break them and their employees, "many of their employees have been let go now their second or third time as of yesterday and it's really heartbreaking to hear their stories."Bailey said he voiced his concerns on Instagram after learning Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten filed an adjudication request that stated, "San Diego's increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier." The most recent information from the county shows work is the location with the highest transmission rate at 30%. Businesses like restaurants and gyms that are affected by the purple tier restrictions make up about 20% of exposures altogether."So if these businesses are not actually contributing to the spread of COVID based on information from the County Health Officer then why would we be shutting them down in the first place?" Bailey said.Coronavirus cases are higher than they've ever been, at 64,768 as of Sunday.“This is a stark reminder that COVID is real, is spreading and must be taken seriously. At this point, we are pleading with the public to take action to slow the spread: wear a mask, physically distance, and limit contact with those outside of your household,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chair, County of San Diego COVID-19 Subcommittee.The purple tier closures went into effect Saturday. Over the last week, Saturday and Sunday saw the highest jumps in new cases we've seen."I think the desire of the entire region of course is to slow the spread," Bailey said, but he hopes to do that with a new system."We call upon the state of California to implement a better more nuanced policy that has protocols in place that allow businesses who are not contributing to the spread to remain open and place greater emphasis on the areas where we know gatherings are taking place that are contributing to the spread and subsequent hospitalizations."Bailey will be at a march and rally spearheaded by Supervisor Jim Desmond Monday afternoon voicing these concerns.They will march from Time Out Sports Tavern at 2:30 pm to the County Administration Building and hold a rally there. 2430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sophie Felix may be petite, but there is nothing small about the way she approaches living and giving -- and it all started with her grandparents."Growing up, my Grandmother and my Grandpa Augie used to be foster parents so from a very young age I understood it's very important to give back to children in need," says Felix.Nine years ago, Sophie says she felt compelled to reach out to the Encinitas-based group, Passion 4 K.I.D.S. which stands for Kids In Desperate Situations. The group helps improve the lives of handicapped, neglected and underprivileged children.Through founders Linda and Charles Van Kessler, Sophie met Izaiah Wallis and his family. Izaiah has been unable to walk or talk since he was hit by a drunk driver at age one, 10 years ago.Sophie started out by planning special experiences for the family including securing sponsorships for trips to Disneyland and Seaworld as well as handicapped accessible gear such as a van --- and Sophie was just getting started. A mom herself, she became the chapter president of America's Children of Fallen Heroes. Off-roading adventure in a custom jeep is just one part of what the group does. A bigger part is providing the kids with a 10-year mentorship program so they can pursue anything and realize their dreams.Sophie says that is very important to her because she herself is living her American dream. In addition to her charity work, Sophie runs her own business, HBM Talent and Management, and she spreads her passion to every client she signs."That is part of our deal. They have to volunteer for at least 2 charity events per year," she says.Those clients, including former NASCAR driver Felix Giles, are happy to do it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's first nonstop flights to Montreal will begin in summer of 2020, according to Canadian airline Air Transat.The airline announced Tuesday it will launch direct flights between Montreal, Quebec, and San Diego next summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several events and school systems in San Diego have had their immediate schedules altered due to the coronavirus.Several conferences set to take place in San Diego have canceled or rescheduled, while others don't have immediately plans to alter their plans.Schools systems are also preparing for the possibility of changing schedules and continuing the school year amid coronavirus worries.LATEST CORONAVIRUS UPDATESHere's a look at what events and schools have changed their schedules due to COVID-19 worries and what we're monitoring: (We'll update this list as soon as more information is available.)Events:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well.
