JACKSON, MO. — A rescued puppy is attracting a lot of attention because of his cute resemblance to a unicorn.The nearly 10-week-old puppy, named Narwhal, has a tail-like appendage growing from his forehead.Narwhal was rescued over the weekend and sent to Mac's Mission in Jackson, which specializes in fostering animals with special needs.Mac's Mission founder Rochelle Steffen says Narwhal doesn't notice the extra tail and is otherwise a happy, healthy puppy.Although it looks like a tail, Narwhal cannot wag it. Steffen says the rescue group has been flooded with requests from people wanting to adopt Narwhal since his picture hit social media.But he'll remain at Mac's Mission so his caretakers can be sure the tail doesn't grow out of proportion to his face and cause him problems. 799

In the latest numbers from the Department of Veterans Affairs, former military members are committing suicide at a rate of 17 a day. “If it were 17 a month, I think that would be a crisis but we’re saying 17 a day,” said Shad Meshad.Meshad created the National Veterans Foundation (NVF) and the first ever veteran suicide hotline in the country. He’s been running it for more than three decades, helping thousands of veterans.About a year ago, he helped Marine Corps Veteran Mario Miramontes, who was once on the brink of taking his own life.“It was accepting that I am not a part of this big machine,” said Miramontes. “It was just me, my family, my kids and I didn’t have any back up.”Like many veterans, Miramontes was struggling with transitioning out of the military.Being a Marine felt like the highest honor in his life. It gave him purpose and then it was gone.“Nothing has really replaced that sense of service,” Miramontes explained.Miramontes struggled with that for a decade after leaving the Marines, but what took him to the point of suicide was feeling like his service and sacrifice was so easily forgotten by society. He says he found himself cleaning fish and being called racial slurs after returning to civilian life.Veteran suicide hotlines get more than 1,000 calls a day, some estimate more than 2,000 calls a day, from servicemembers in the same kind of dark place Miramontes was at.“We have today an epidemic, an epidemic of suicide,” said Meshad.Meshad is also a veteran, he served in the Army during Vietnam. It was that service and what he saw there that made him realize that the rest of his life would be helping veterans overcome the mental and invincible wounds of war.“When I was in Vietnam, as a mental health officer actually, I was very aware we were going to have problems coming back,” explained Meshad.Despite Meshad’s efforts over the last 50 years, it just doesn’t seem like the number of veterans needing help is shrinking.“When soldiers are getting ready to come out of the service from war or even without going to war, there needs to be at least six months of training on how to come out,” Meshad said. “Not only six months preparation but another six months of people like us to let them know things are going to go this way or that way and this way. It’s okay, it’s normal.”Support is critical to preventing suicide amongst veterans, just ask Miramontes with support from Meshad and his fellow veterans at NVF, he is in a better place mentally. Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte says he is restricting travel nationwide to try to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. Conte said Monday night a new government decree will require all people in Italy to demonstrate they need to work, have health conditions or other limited legitimate reasons to travel outside their home areas. He said the restrictions will take effect on Tuesday and like those in northern Italy will last until April 3. Pubs had been closed in northern Italy, with eateries and cafes also ordered to close at dusk. Now that crackdown is extended to the entire country. 604
JPMorgan Chase, which is the parent company of Chase Bank, announced this week plans to make it easier for those with criminal pasts to be considered for employment with the company. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements.The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. When someone cannot get their foot in the door to compete for a job, it is bad for business and bad for communities that need access to economic opportunity,” said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “Giving more people a second chance allows businesses to step-up and do their part to reduce recidivism, hire talented workers, and strengthen the economy.”The financial services company's decision to ban the box is part of a broader initiative to advocate for reforms to make it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to be part of the workforce. JPMorgan Chase said it will advocate for restoration of Pell Grants to those with criminal pasts, training for people with criminal backgrounds, and support reforms to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) hiring rules. "The FDIC believes that at a minimum, each insured institution should establish a screening process that provides the insured institution with information concerning any convictions or program entry pertaining to a job applicant.
