BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council issued a collection of slogans Friday for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     The collection of 50 catchphrases touches upon issues of political system, economic development, environmental protection, military modernization and national unification.     On the top of the slogan list are "Warmly celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China!" and "Hail the great success of our country's reform and opening-up and socialist modernization!"     Also on the list are "Put people first, realize, safeguard and develop the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people!" and "build a socialist harmonious society and promote social equity and justice!"     One of the slogans also advocates the inheritance of fine military tradition that the armed forces should obey the command of the Party and serve the people.     Slogans also include "Adhere to the one China policy and promote the country's great cause of peaceful reunification!" and "Adhere to the independent foreign policy of peace and unswervingly pursue the road of peaceful development!" and "Long live the great unity of all nationalities of China!"     China has planned massive celebrations for the 60th founding anniversary of the people's republic on Oct. 1. The celebrations in downtown Beijing will feature a mass pageant and a military review.

PYONGYANG, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese living in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday expressed willingness to help boost bilateral ties at a reception in the Chinese embassy to Pyongyang.     The reception was held to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     A powerful and prosperous motherland is a powerful backing for the Chinese in the DPRK, said Liang Zuojun, vice president of the Central Committee of the Federation of the Chinese Residing in the DPRK. VANCOUVER, Aug 3 (Xinhua) -- As China advances its national strategy to reduce carbon and other emission from transportation, the collaboration between Canada's Westport Innovations Inc. and various alternative energy companies in China is expected to be even more, Nicholas Sonntag, president of Westport Asia, said recently.     Sonntag spoke highly of Westport's ongoing operations in China. "Westport has a very positive impression of our cooperation with partners and government officials in China," he told Xinhua in a written interview. "There have been challenges along the way but we have a full time office in Beijing with Chinese staff that has been critical to our strategic and tactical approach to all initiatives we have undertaken in China."     Westport Innovation Inc., a leading global supplier of engine and alternative fuel power technologies that allow large vehicle engines to operate on clean-burning fuels like natural gas or hydrogen, has set up two joint ventures in China. One is BTIC Westport Inc., which produces liquefied natural gas fuel tanks for vehicles, and another is Weichai Westport Inc., which develops advanced alternative fuel engines.     Sonntag, who is also the Westport's Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, suggested Westport's operations in China have benefited from the fact that China has attached growing importance to alternative energy solutions and sustainable development.     "The rapid growth of the Chinese economy has generated opportunities in a variety of sectors and alternative energy solutions to transport is one that has seen rapid growth due to the dramatically increased levels of air pollution resulting from urban development," he said. "This rapid development has certainly presented huge challenges to the policy makers in China."     He noted that despite some setbacks, the overall direction of China's strong growth "has been maintained in a manner that tries to aggressively address the many social, environmental and physical challenges being faced."     "The deep respect and commitment to sustainable development is seen at all levels," he added. "And progress is being made with new and creative policies which are being introduced regularly."     Sonntag has been active in international engineering and sustainable development for over 35 years, working as a senior executive for organizations -- corporate and non-profit -- in China, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. He has spent nearly six years in China, first serving at CH2M HILL -- a global full-service engineering, procurement, construction and operations firm-- as the President of the company's operations in China and Hong Kong, and then as President of Westport Asia. He moved back from Beijing to Westport's headquarters in Vancouver only a few weeks ago.     He has witnessed the changes that China's reform and opening up have brought about. From his perspective, the most notable changes have been "in the areas of legal process in the establishment of new companies and the increased commitment to protect intellectual property."     He said the issues relating to intellectual property have long been a big concern for foreign companies hoping to develop business in China. "They have been important to our investments in China since without assurances on the legal and intellectual property elements of our business, our long term strategies would be unsustainable."     He said a high value on intellectual property has now been seen in China and Chinese partners have developed the awareness of protecting their own intellectual property, adding "their motivation is in line with our motivation."     As for the economic globalization, Sonntag described China's contribution as "immense." BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo.     He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties.     Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China.     In a separate meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Steinberg reiterated that the United States would continue with the one-China policy and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were considered by the U.S. government the crucial principle in handling bilateral ties.     After expounding China's stance on Taiwan and issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang, Xi said respect and care for each side's core interests and major concerns was the key to the healthy and steady growth of ties.     Xi called on the U.S. side to handle concerned issues in a "prudent" and "appropriate" way, to safeguard China-U.S. relations.     Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January.     The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said.     Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour.     "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi.     "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said. 

BEIJING, July 31 -- China can expect to be a major target of rising trade protectionism - particularly from the United States and India - as the world struggles to recover from the global financial crisis, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said Thursday.    The crisis has pushed trade protectionist cases to a historical high.     "The US is abusing trade protectionist tools to help its own industries tide over the economic slowdown. The loss for Chinese businesses is huge," said Zhou Xiaoyan, deputy director of the China Bureau of Fair Trade for Imports & Exports.     As a consequence, China will have an even harder time than it does now, encountering anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and special protection cases, officials said.     From last September to this June, the main World Trade Organization members, including the US and European nations, launched 77 cases worth .8 billion against China, increasing the number by 112 percent from a year earlier.     Zhou said, moreover, that due to the sharp competitiveness of Chinese products and to the advantage it has of cheap labor costs, sufficient funds and high-quality technology, the country will be targeted for some time.     The fair trade bureau, which is under MOFCOM, is responsible for dealing with trade protectionist cases.     Cases centering on green barriers, such as a carbon tariff measure that the US might launch against developing nations to protect its businesses, will be another hot trend.     China has especially been facing trade protectionist measures related to labor-intensive categories.     The US and India have been among the most aggressive in the rising wave of protectionism, officials said.     In April, for example, the US launched an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation of oil-well steel tubing worth .2 billion, one of the largest ever for China.     And also in April, the US launched a case against Chinese tire makers valued at about .2 billion, also the largest such case for China.     The tire case, if approved by President Barack Obama in the fall, could spark a series of such cases by other nations.     "The US has been a leader in launching measures against China," said Wang Rongjun, a professor at the Institute of American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.     "The US," Wang said, "expects to transfer part of its economic slowdown to China, which is believed to be the quickest to recover."     China and the US are each other's second-largest trade partner. The two nations have stressed since late 2008 that they have been fighting trade protectionism, including at the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue held in Washington this week.     And in the case of India, it now has the most cases pending against China - from last September to June, it accounted for about 40 percent of the total. The cases cover a wide range of products, including textile, steel and chemicals.     "As newly emerging nations are being brought directly into competing against China, the upward trend will continue," Zhou said.     Despite falling exports, China still holds the largest share of labor-intensive products in the American and European markets, which threatens Indian businesses.     "Compared with the US, India is far from reasonable," said Fu Donghui, managing director of the Beijing Allbright Law Firm, which deals with anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases.     "The Indians find any opportunity to challenge the Chinese. As long as there is any call from an Indian enterprise, the Indian government will launch an investigation, even without research."     The MOFCOM plans to focus on cases involving the US and India. "We expect to find out the reasons behind that growth and learn how to avoid them in the future," Zhou said.     For years, the Chinese government shied away from appealing to the WTO for help in battling trade protectionist measures.     "The government should have actively appealed to the WTO to prevent foreign nations from abusing its rights," Fu said.     China will now use the WTO tools to prevent its businesses from being hurt by foreign counterparts, but, nonetheless, it will be prudent, Zhou said.
