LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board.There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan.There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash.One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds.The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. He was an all-American kid, the kind of kid you want your son to grow up to be,” said Keystone High School wrestling coach Don Griswold. “To lose a kind soul, a loving soul, full of life like Logan is beyond tough. I still don’t quite know how to sum it all up."Stiner's parents, Dennis and Katie, urged lawmakers to ban the sale?of powdered caffeine. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A vigil held Wednesday for a bicyclist killed at an intersection in South Los Angeles on Tuesday became the scene of another hit-and-run crash that injured a pedestrian."The driver of a tan-colored Honda Accord drove through the vigil at the intersection of Manchester and Normandie avenues shortly after 1 p.m.," Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im said.The video from the scene captured the sedan striking the pedestrian, who is then flung into the air, appearing to hit his head on the car windshield and finally landing on the asphalt.RELATED: GOOD SAMARITAN HIT WHILE HELPING MOTORISTAfter rolling to his feet, he hopped over to the sidewalk on one foot, seemingly injuring his right leg. He then collapsed onto the sidewalk where onlookers came to his aid.As the suspected hit-and-run motorist drove off, a group from the dozens of bicyclists taking part in the vigil attempted to follow the vehicle, including people running after the driver.During the vigil, "some rocks and bottles were thrown toward responding officers and a patrol vehicle, but no officers were injured and no arrests were made," Im said.Police were able to eventually clear the intersection. A department SUV can be seen having its rear window smashed.According to the LAPD's South Traffic Division, the bicyclist killed Tuesday was a man in his early 20s, who was struck by a white Porsche Cayenne SUV. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) — Late Saturday, Los Angeles County changed its public health order to allow indoor religious services with modifications — something that could have implications for a South Bay church's legal battle.Los Angeles County's Department of Public Health issued the changes following a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Dec. 3 that places of worship in New York could reopen because coronavirus restrictions violated the First Amendment of the Constitution. The high court then sent an unsigned order to California judges to reconsider Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions.RELATED: Chula Vista church among churches suing over right to worshipThe updated protocols require places of worship to require masks that cover the nose and mouth worn at all times on-site and that capacity doesn't exceed the number of people who can be accommodated while observing physical distance:"All attendees/visitors must wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose at all times when in attendance and also at any time when they could come into contact with, or when walking past others who are non-household members.All attendees/visitors must observe a six-foot physical distance between themselves and others who are not members of their household. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a Black man Wednesday after he allegedly tried to grab one of their guns during a struggle. According to an Orange County Sheriff's Department press release, two deputies from the Homeless Outreach Team made contact with the man outside the Hotel Miramar in San Clemente. "During the contact, a physical altercation occurred. Surveillance video at the scene showed that during the physical altercation, the subject attempted to gain control of a deputy’s gun," the department said in the news release. "Shortly after, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Deputies began lifesaving measures, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene."The latest killing of a Black person by law enforcement happened on the same day as the decision not to charge Kentucky police officers for Breonna Taylor's death was announced. Part of the incident Wednesday afternoon in San Clemente, California, was captured on video and posted to social media by the Southern Orange County Black Lives Matter group.
