BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in China's 24 regions reported combined profits of 690.8 billion yuan (101.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, more than double the figure of the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Wednesday.The NBS did not provide reasons for the 102.6-percent profit surge. The figure was down 21.1 percentage points for the first two months of the year, the statement said.Analysts attributed the growth to a low comparison base during the first quarter of 2009 when the country's economic growth was dragged down by the global economic downturn. The economic recovery, backed by government stimulus measures, also helped lift profits.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said in a statement last week that industrial production in the first quarter had accelerated and profits of enterprises continued to expand on growing domestic demand.Altogether 38 of the 39 major industrial sectors saw year-on-year growth in profits, with profits of the steel industry up 3,380 percent and those of the power sector up 1,540 percent, the statement said.

BEIJING, May 22 -- China's stock index futures wrapped up their first month of trading on Friday as the May contract was delivered smoothly without triggering sharp declines or volatility in the spot market.The May contract rose 0.51 percent to close at 2749.8 points while the June contract, the most actively traded, rose 1.44 percent to close at 2801 points. The CSI 300 Index, which tracks 300 large caps traded on the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses gained 1.57 percent to 2768.79 points.The smooth settlement of the May contract eased investors' worries about the "expiration day effect", with fears that it would trigger sharper volatility on the spot market due to more active trading of index futures as investors rushed to close positions for May and changed to June contracts on that day."The trading volume and the holdings of the May contract dramatically decreased in the past month, which significantly reduced the incentive of price manipulation in the spot market," said Yang Cui, an analyst at Changjiang Securities.Chen Zhenzhi, an analyst at Guangfa Futures, said the impact of the expiry day was very limited due to the fact that most institutional investors have not participated in index futures trading.The China's index futures market is still dominated by retail investors although securities firms and equity funds have been allowed to trade the new financial instrument. The securities regulator required that institutional investors should trade index futures for hedging rather than speculative purposes.Trading of index futures contracts, agreements to buy or sell the CSI 300 Index at a present value on an agreed date, allow investors to profit from both gains and declines in the market. Chinese investors could previously only profit from gains in equity prices.Some analysts said the launch of the financial instrument was one of the reasons leading to the recent decline as the short selling mechanism increases market volatility in the short term.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index has declined 17 percent since the launch of index futures trading on April 16. BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is "trying its best" to look for families for orphans in the Qinghai quake zone while trying to give them special care, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs."Among all people in the quake-hit areas, children whose parents were killed during the quake are in the most difficult situation and need special care," said an unnamed official with the ministry Friday.Government organizations and social groups would work together to care for the orphans.The ministry said it would seek adoptions for all orphans in the quake zone as soon as possible, and would "fully respect" the children's preferences and the traditions and habits of ethnic children.Six children were reportedly injured in the quake when a four-story orphan school collapsed. A total of 220 students are living in tents.The total number of orphans in the quake zone is not available.According to the ministry, social welfare organizations in Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, have set aside more than 300 beds for orphans and children whose parents or other family members have not been contactable since a 7.1-magnitude quake hit Yushu, Qinghai, on April 14.The ministry also planned to mobilize help from other regions if Qinghai had difficulty settling the orphans.Previous reports said SOS Children's Villages in Chengdu, Urumqi, Beijing and Tianjin would contact with the civil affairs department in Yushu and prepare for the arrival of orphans.The central government and Qinghai authorities would jointly provide each orphan with a monthly financial support of 1,000 yuan (146 U.S. dollars) for three months from April.In addition, figures from the ministry show that a total of 56,000 tents had reached the quake zone as of Friday evening, along with 117,000 coats and 208,000 quilts among other daily necessities and relief materials.The quake in Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu has left 2,187 people dead and 80 missing. Among the 12,135 injured, 1,434 were in serious condition.
