The question at hand: Where should a 7,000-pound elephant live?The legal issue pits an elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn. against the woman who raised Tarra the elephant since she was a baby.The case went to trial just this week and ended with a hung jury, so the fate of Tarra -- perhaps the best known of the Sanctuary's elephants -- remains in limbo.Tarra is an Asian elephant. Many remember the story from a decade ago of Tarra and her loyal canine companion, Bella. She was the first elephant at the Sanctuary in Hohenwald, brought there by co-founder Carol Buckley in 1995.Years earlier, Buckley took ownership of Tarra from a businessman in California."It was an instantaneous attraction to each other. She needed a mother. She was a baby, and I was happy to fill that role," Buckley said.This led to Buckley starting the sanctuary, but after several years, Buckley was ousted. She left Tarra there knowing it was the best place for her at the time.Now, Buckley operates a new sanctuary in Georgia. She said she never surrendered Tarra, has worried about her welfare in Hohenwald, and is suing to get her back."The lawsuit is very simple. It says I own Tarra," said Buckley.Legal expert Jim Todd said this is the first-of-its-type case in Tennessee.Todd said there's the custody issue, but he added there's also the question of whether Buckley abandoned Tarra.She said no and added her concern has always been what's best for the elephant."I'm going to put her wherever it is best. If Georgia is better for her, I would move her to Georgia," Buckley said. "If Tennessee is better, I would leave her in Tennessee."The two-day trial this week in Lewis County ended with a hung jury. Ten jurors voted to return Tarra to Buckley with two others saying no. A retrial likely won't happen until 2019.Asian elephants typically have a lifespan of 48 years. Tarra is 44 years old.The Elephant Sanctuary issued the following statement saying in part, "We remain fully committed and exist to provide home, herd and individualized lifetime care to all residents of the Sanctuary, as we have done for the past 23 years." 2211

A Florida mother says her daughter was denied lunch on the first day of school because she didn't have money to pay a 15 cent debt.Kimberly Aiken told WKMG-TV in Orlando that her daughter, a sophomore at University High School in Orange City, Florida, was told that she owed 15 cents when she went through the lunch line on the first day of school this week. When she told the cashier that she didn't have any money on her, the cashier allegedly threw the food away.Aiken's daughter did not eat anything for the rest of the school day.According to CBS News, Aiken signed her daughter up for a free and reduced-cost lunch program at University High School. However, the program hadn't taken effect yet. Aiken suspects that the 15 cent deficit was carried over from last year.A spokesperson for the Volusia County Public Schools said the district has contacted the family directly about the issue.Aiken's daughter reportedly brought a quarter to school the next day to cover the deficit and was told the shortage had been taken care of.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. A farm in Indiana is recalling more than 200 million eggs sold in nine states over salmonella fears.Rose Acre Farms voluntarily recalled 206,749,248 eggs due to potential contamination with Salmonella Braenderup, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.At least 22 illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA said Friday.The eggs were sold through retail stores and restaurants. They reached consumers in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia."Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb tweeted. "Throw them away or return them to place of purchase for credit or refund."Brands affected include Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms and Glenview, with some eggs sold at Walmart and Food Lion stores.Salmonella causes serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. It is generally contracted from contaminated poultry, meat, eggs and water, and affects the intestinal tract.Chickens can pass the bacteria to eggs because the eggs leave hens through the same passageway as feces. Alternatively, bacteria in the hen's ovary or oviduct can get to the egg before the shell forms around it, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.In 2010, a salmonella outbreak sickened hundreds and led to the recall of half a billion eggs. 1558
