On Friday morning, a truck pulled up outside Heim Elementary School in Williamsville to collect boxes full of shoes for the Nicaragua Mission Project.The project has been collecting supplies for people in Nicaragua for more than a decade. Based in East Amherst, it works with volunteers from local schools and churches to fill boxes with donations and send them from New York to Nicaragua.Heim Elementary School has been working with the project for years, and one fourth grader has been a part of the project for most of his life. Luke Avery started collecting shoes in kindergarten. He even goes to other schools and daycares to pick up donations. Luke has collected more than 3,000 pairs of shoes over the years. He was there again Friday morning to donate more."I feel like other kids can go for school because of kids at my school," Luke said."This is not from me, this is from other children," the project's organizer, Ann Marie Zon said. "And they always feel another kid feeling for them is more special than that shoes. On Monday, McDonald's announced that they are developing a new plant-based burger, which they've coined the McPlant.They also are launching a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich in early 2021.In a blog post, the company said it would be testing a meat-free burger in several markets next year. They tried the plant-based burger in select restaurants in Canada last year."There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich," the fast-food chain said in the blog post. "It's made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."The new sandwich announcements come as part of the company's current growth strategy called "Accelerating the Arches," which is an effort to boost sales.The plan includes new packaging, a loyalty program called "MyMcDonald's," and providing a fast, comfortable experience for our customers with a "powerful digital experience."Through "MyMcDonald's," customers will receive special offers. The new program will be launched in the coming weeks in the Phoenix area as a pilot program."In countries around the world, we have seen customer behaviors change at an unprecedented pace over the last several months. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters battled a fire at a North County residence Saturday.The 3-alarm blaze was reported in the 1400 block of Division Street just after 2:30 p.m., according to an Oceanside Fire Battalion Chief. It took fire crews an hour to get the upper hand in the firefight, due to the wind and lack of resources, according to fire officials.Three people were injured. Two people were transported to UCSD hospital for burn injuries. One man was burned on the arm, according to his father, Alfredo Muruato. Muruato said his son and his daughter-in-law were asleep when the fire started and were awoken by the dog.Another resident, Carla Vega, described the harrowing ordeal. She said she was in the shower when she heard a loud boom, "I peeked out my head and smelled fire so I got out of the shower... I just saw a bunch of smoke everybody running." She said everyone was panicked. When she returned to remove her things, she said everyone was going to have to find another place to live. "Everything is replaceable, it is materialistic, my life is not materialistic, that’s what matters, I got myself out, my dog," Vega said.The Red Cross is assisting more than 30 people were displaced in the fire.The cause of the fire is still under investigation. OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A 72-year-old man found dead in a vehicle and two other people discovered on a roadway were among the latest victims of the deadliest wildfire in California this year. The Butte County sheriff's office said DNA testing was used to positively identify 10 of 15 people killed last week in the North Complex fire burning northeast of San Francisco. The victims included three people whose bodies were found in or near a burned vehicle. Gov. Gavin Newsom said more than 17,000 firefighters are battling some 25 major fires that were sparked in the past month. The death toll stands at 25 with more than 38,000 people under evacuation statewide. 672
