Leaders of a program for at risk youth in Southern California are worried as the teens who need the most help may not be getting the opportunities they need because of the pandemic.Student Leslie Damien has very specific aspirations.“I want to be a doctor, actually -- I hope to be getting into autopsies,” Damien said.But that wasn't the case two years ago when she was living an entirely different lifestyle.“I was on probation for skipping school, for being absent all the time, for smoking and doing drugs. I was doing really bad during this time,” Damien said.Damien said it was her probation officer who made her realize that her life was spiraling downward. The two sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation.“’Leslie, you are messing up your life,” Damien said, recalling her conversation. “’You have so much to look forward to, you can either go to Sunburst or mess up your life and you’re not going to get anywhere.”She signed up and checked herself in for change.“What made me want to make the change was seeing my grandmother cry,” Damien said. “I saw her cry she said she was disappointed and thought I was going to be something in the world and she though my life was going to go completely bad.”“We take students who are struggling for whatever reason, drugs, alcohol family issues, bad relationships and we bring them into a safe environment built around the military model of structure and discipline and we get them away from all those distractions,” said Sgt. Ryan Salvoni, the admissions coordinator for Sunburst Youth Academy in Los Alamitos, California. It's a quas-imilitary, residential youth program run by the National Guard and Orange County Department of Education.“Sunburst is not a placement facility, it’s not a bootcamp for bad kids, parents can’t force their students to attend,” Salvoni said. It’s a scholarship that you have to apply for and earn. You have to have an actual desire for change and make a commitment to the process in order for our program to have significant change in their life.”The program is free, and available to any teen in six Southern California counties. There are 40 similar programs like this one across the country. It’s 22 weeks long, and Salvoni says, there are typically more applicants than scholarships. There's no turning back. No quitting.“We make it harder for a student to quit and go home than it is to get back in and continue through that moment of weakness,” Salvoni said. “We’re trying to develop that sense of resiliency when they’re with us so they can push through moments of wanting to quit or give up.”Salvoni is worried about the kids he's not able to reach. Like every other aspect of our society, the pandemic has changed the way he does outreach.“Any empty scholarship that goes unfulfilled is a lost opportunity for a student to change their life,” Salvoni said.And that, Damien said, is something she's proof of.“I would be probably on the streets, smoking weed, not graduating high school, doing the same things I was doing before, not in a good place, nowhere near where I am now,” Damien said.After graduating, she became valedictorian, graduating with a 4.5 GPA, and is well on her way to become a doctor.“It's an extraordinary opportunity for those students who don’t have a future or who think that there’s nothing that’s going to go on with their life it’s a huge opportunity to start your future to give you a second opportunity to be something great or be something in the world,” Damien said.All that is required for applicants is an ID and be free of serious legal troubles. 3586

Less than a year after the Boy Scouts of America decided to invite girls to join, the organization announced that it will refer to its older youth program as "Scouts BSA" starting in February 2019.The name change comes amid a new campaign slogan, "Scout Me In," that was made to emphasize the group's expansion from just boys to boys and girls."Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids," Stephen Medlicott, National Marketing Group Director of Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement. "That's why we love 'Scout Me In' -- because it speaks to girls and boys and tells them, 'This is for you. We want you to join!'"The name change only applies to the program currently called Boy Scouts, which is available for teens ages 11-17. The Cub Scouts program, for children ages 5-10, will not undergo a name change. The name of the organization will remain Boy Scouts of America.The decision to open the scouting program to girls last October was both a reflection of growing progressive attitudes as well as a business decision. The Boy Scouts of America has seen declining numbers for years. The organization says it has nearly 2.3 million youth members between 5 and 21, a decrease from the 2.8 million members in 2012.In its statements, the Boy Scouts of America said more than 3,000 girls have joined the Early Adopter Program and are participating in Cub Scouts ahead of the full launch later this year.  1440

Latinos are more likely to have to stay in the hospital and are also more likely to die from coronavirus, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).A number of factors contribute to a higher risk, including language barriers and not receiving important information in their native language.That's why communities across the country are focusing on finding bilingual contact tracers.Community Care of North Carolina has a team of them.“We do try to find individuals that match the community, because that's what builds the trust, and people are more willing to talk to people that are like them, and their community,” said Christina Page with Community Care of North Carolina. “So, we try really hard to try to find bilingual individuals who can go out into the community.”Not only are people in the Latino community more willing to speak to a contact tracer, it's also easier to speak about their own health.“It is hard for the community to communicate through interpreters and that is a barrier for trust. It is easy for somebody, if you are talking in your language, to connect and express how you are feeling and what are the problems that you have,” said Wendy Pascual with Community Care North Carolina.Contact tracers aren't just finding people who have been exposed to coronavirus. They're often giving people information they had not received before and also connecting families with resources that help them get food and pay for utilities.There's also need for contact tracers who speak other languages, but the biggest need is for people who speak Spanish. 1609

LA MESA (CNS) - The family of a grandmother who was struck in the face by a law enforcement projectile, suffering severe injuries, during a weekend police protest in La Mesa called Tuesday for the officer involved to be publicly identified, fired and charged with attempted murder.Cellphone video that has gone viral shows 59-year-old Leslie Furcron lying on the ground, blood streaming down her face, amid shouting demonstrators attending the Saturday evening protest against police brutality.Furcron remains hospitalized in an intensive-care unit in a medically induced coma and may lose one of her eyes, according to her family and their attorney. They held a news conference outside La Mesa City Hall to demand that the officer who fired the projectile, which struck her in the forehead, be held accountable.Dante Pride, an attorney representing the family, said he had reviewed dozens of videos and spoken with scores of people present at the protest outside La Mesa police headquarters and has seen no evidence that Furcron was violent or did anything to justify being shot.Furcron was holding up her cellphone, recording the protest, when an officer opened fire, Pride said. The other demonstrators also were being peaceful and received no warning from law enforcement before "the tear gas came and the bullets rained down," he said.Pride said he believes the involved officer purposely aimed at Furcron's head, in contradiction of the LMPD's rules regarding use of force, which he said hold that projectiles be aimed below the waist.It's uncertain whether the officer who opened fire was with the La Mesa Police Department or another agency, though Pride said he believes it was an LMPD officer.A representative of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said the regional agency had no role in the shooting."It did not involve a sheriff's deputy," sheriff's public-affairs Lt. (KGTV) -- Police have released video after a 59-year-old woman was shot in the face with a bean bag round during a protest outside the La Mesa Police Department in late May.Police Wednesday also identified the officer involved in the incident as Eric Knudson, a 12-year veteran of the department.
