PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Palm Springs, California, real estate market is thriving, with many properties receiving multiple offers just a few days after being listed. “It’s amazing how fast the prices have escalated,” said Kevin Stern, a real estate broker with Town Real Estate. Stern has been selling real estate in the Coachella Valley for years and calls Palm Springs a very unique market. “It draws the LGBTQ community so greatly,” said Stern. “I would say the average is age group that is buying right now is between the ages of 45 and 60.” Combine that with median home price of nearly 0,000 and there are a lot of retirees spending a lot of money in this desert resort city. And now a pair of casino developers are gambling on building and bringing something new to the desert. “This is nine acres of undeveloped property that will be the site of Living Out,” said developer Paul Alanis who along with his business partner Loren Ostrow are building Living Out Palm Springs – an active retirement community designed for the LGBTQ community. “It will be first class in every respect,” Alanis said. “The level of amenities and the level of an access to a vibrant LGBTQ community here in Palm Springs – those are the two features that are most different than others.” Those features, however, are going to cost you. A 13,000 square foot, one-bed, one and a half bath starts at 9,000. “It’s clearly going to be worth it because it's going to be a luxury type of facility,” Alanis said. “We’re not skimping on anything when it comes to creating a quality of life.” Who would buy a property like this for this price? Well, it depends on who you ask. “Palm Springs is already a retirement community for LGBTQ’s,” Logan Whalen said. While Whalen isn’t at the retirement age yet and he doesn’t plan on moving to a LGBTQ community when he turns 55, he does think it’s a good option. “I think the more people that feel welcome here, the happier all of us are going to be in retirement,” he said. Several city leaders also support this project. “People use to say Palm Springs is a place for the newlyweds and the nearly dead,” joked Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. Moon leads the country's first all-LGBTQ city council. And with the number of LGBTQ Americans over the age of 50 expected to double in the next 10 years – he believes there is a big need for this kind of retirement community.“A lot of people find once you come here you can’t forget it,” he said. “This is a wonderful place to visit but it’s also a great place to retire.” 2556

Handmade tortillas and rice and beans are all ingredients in some of Silvia Hernandez' most beloved meals. “I'm from Mexico City, so I love tacos,” she says. “My favorite dish is the carne asada taco.” Hernandez is an immigrant and came to the U.S. a few years ago. She knew how to cook, but she wanted to turn her passion and skill and wanted to turn her traditional Mexican cooking into a business. But she had no idea where to even start.“I didn't know anything about, you know, [the] process, license, requirements,” she says. “I did not even know where offices are located.” That’s where Slavitca Park came in. Park created the Comal Heritage Food Incubator as an outreach program. It’s for low-income immigrants, who needed help to start food businesses based around the cuisines of their homelands. “Everything from understanding, how do you build a menu, how do you source food, how do you price it, what kind of licensing, permitting, you need financing,” Park explains of the education the program provides. The incubator, which acts as a learning kitchen of sorts, is packed five days a week. Here, the women create their own dishes and train with professional chefs. The program now includes refugees from Syria and Ethiopia. “I always say food is one of those things that absolutely transcends everything,” Park says. “I just really think that food is the vehicle that builds the community. Breaking breads. That's what it’s all about.” Hernandez completed the program and now has her own catering company. But she says she just can’t stay away from the program. She still works a couple shifts a week in the incubator. Park loves hearing the stories of those who complete the program."What comes out of it, it’s nothing short of pure magic,” she says. 1783

President Donald Trump said tonight that he has signed an executive order to shut down the use of Chinese-based social media applications TikTok and WeChat in 45 days.The order specifically prohibits any U.S. transactions with TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, starting on Sept. 20.Trump cited privacy concerns for taking the action against the social media networks.TikTok in particular has gained popularity among younger Americans in recent months for its short, entertaining video clips. The TikTok community has often been critical of Trump. Earlier in the summer, users of TikTok organized by reserving tickets to Trump’s rally in Tulsa, which failed to draw the type of crowds the Trump campaign expected.Trump said in his order that WeChat and TikTok “automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users -- threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information. For more than 40 years, The Guardian Angels have been putting their lives on the line to protect citizens. The group, which is made up of volunteers, don't get paid and don't carry weapons. Advocates of the group say they have made a big difference in public safety. But the group is having trouble attracting new members, and it's losing its headquarters in Colorado. It’s Saturday evening on one of Denver’s most dangerous streets, when the calls of concerns start coming in. “We got a report from a passerby about an individual shooting over here,” said Robi Salo, commander of the Colorado Guardian Angels. The word "shooting" refers to drug use, and that's exactly what Salo and his team found when they arrived to the scene. They approached young man, sitting in a parking lot with a needle in his hand. “We aren’t going to bust your b***s or nothing,” Salo says. “If you’re going to shoot, you’re going to shoot.”The young man decides, at least while the Guardian Angels are around, not to inject himself with drugs. Salo chalks it up a small win. Back in the day, the Guardian Angels had a reputation of being a Robin Hood, while robbing drug dealers and donating that money to local shelters. The group started out protecting New York City subway riders in the late 1970’s. The Colorado Guardian Angel chapter opened in Denver in 1993. Twenty-six years later, their numbers are dropping, their members are getting older and they’re losing their headquarters.“The numbers have dwindled over the years,” Salo says of the Colorado Guardian Angels. “Instead of having 100 active, we have 25 maybe on the deep list; probably about 12 that are heavily active. And we’re aging. I’m 55 we have members that are as old as 70.”Salo says while there are more Guardian Angels chapters across the country, the number of active members has stayed the same at around 3,000 since the mid-1990’s. The angels are aging out, but there is hope to replace them. “I’m kind of, right now, a rookie; fresh meat,” said Zane Salazar, who at 16 years old is following his father’s footsteps in becoming a Guardian Angel. “We want to show the community that we’re out there, show the community that we care, and I think people will come along if they see that.”We reached out to several national and local law enforcement agencies for their take on the Guardian Angels. None of them wanted comment, but police departments typically don't encourage citizens to take the law into their own hands.
