But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. Only India has been averaging more deaths per day than the US in recent weeks, and India’s population is nearly quadruple America’s population.While many European nations saw a reprieve from the despair of the coronavirus over the summer, counties such as France and the United Kingdom are seeing cases jump in recent weeks, although their death counts still pale in comparison to the United States.The New England Journal of Medicine said that the US had every advantage going into the pandemic to combat the disease.“The United States came into this crisis with enormous advantages,” the journal’s editors wrote. “Along with tremendous manufacturing capacity, we have a biomedical research system that is the envy of the world. We have enormous expertise in public health, health policy, and basic biology and have consistently been able to turn that expertise into new therapies and preventive measures. The pandemic has added extra stress to our lives, but that's not stopping some of us from getting more sleep.New research from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Washington looked at how stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines have impacted college students' sleeping habits.They found that on average, students have been sleeping 30 minutes more per weekday and 24 minutes more per weekend day. They've also been keeping more consistent sleep schedules.This is similar to what a study of people ages 18 to 65 in Europe found during this same time.So, the big question now is whether these habits will continue now that stay at home orders are lifted.“One of the things we recognize is that when people who weren't getting enough sleep start to actually get better sleep because they can and they realize ‘wow that makes a difference in my life,’ a number of people choose behaviorally to go ahead and continue to get that better sleep,” said Ken Wright, integrative physiology professor at CU Boulder.As for the question about whether the quality of our sleep has improved, the study in Europe did look at that. It found on average, people have been seeing slight reductions in the quality of their sleep, but there are things you can do to help with this.“When they looked at the group as a whole, they found that those people who got exercise and got more sunlight during the COVID stay-at-home, they found that they actually had less reductions in their sleep quality,” said Wright.One negative result of the stay-at-home orders on our sleep in both studies – people have been going to bed later, both during the week and on weekends. The National Transportation Safety Board is launching a probe that will focus on how first responders handled a fatal crash of a Tesla Model S in Florida this week.Two people died Tuesday evening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a gray 2014 Tesla Model S ran off the road and collided with a concrete wall. The vehicle then caught on fire, engulfing the car in flames, local police said.The NTSB said in a statement Wednesday that the investigation will "primarily focus on emergency response in relation to the electric vehicle battery fire, including fire department activities and towing operations."The driver and front seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger in the back seat survived and was taken to the hospital, authorities said.Police said the car's speed was likely a factor in the incident. The NTSB did not indicate that it suspects first responders did something wrong. The median rental price for an apartment in Manhattan, including anything from a studio to a 3-bedroom, was ,320 in July, and was ,595 in July 2019.The report also tracks the Queens and Brooklyn rental market.
