SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the rapid growth of plant-based meats across the country, businesses in San Diego have been expanding to meet demand.Plant Power, a San Diego-based vegan fast-food chain, announced it would be expanding to four new locations in Southern California in the next 16 months.Founded in 2016, Plant Power currently has locations in Ocean Beach, Encinitas, Redlands, SDSU and Long Beach. The new sites will be in Riverside, Orange County, the Inland Empire and another in San Diego, bringing it to a total of nine locations.Last month, they also debuted a new food truck in Los Angeles.“Consumers are enthusiastic about embracing a healthier, more sustainable take on traditional fast food,” said Mitch Wallis, President and Co-CEO of Plant Power Fast Food.“Fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy for our bodies or bad for the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The threat of a major lawsuit has led to several San Diego County cities changing how they are holding elections. As voters in those districts head to the polls or get their mail-in ballots, they will notice a big change in their options on who to vote for.15 jurisdictions in the county are switching from at-large elections to district elections. This means those jurisdictions have been carved up into districts. In those races voters will only be able to vote for someone who lives in that same district."It's going to create some confusion at the ballot box," Encinitas City Councilmember Tony Kranz told 10News. "You're going to wonder why you can't vote for some of those folks."Encinitas made the change for 2018, along with Carlsbad, El Cajon, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee and Vista. School Districts using the new voting system are Cajon Valley Union, Carlsbad Unified, Oceanside Unified, Poway Unified, San Dieguito Union High School, and San Marcos Unified.In most cases, the change is a response to a threatened lawsuit. Attorney Kevin Shenkman, who works in Malibu, has threatened lawsuits challenging the legality of at-large elections across California. He says at-large elections are a violation of California's Voter's Rights Act of 2001."It's just a fundamentally unfair election system that freezes out minorities," Shenkman told 10News.Shenkman says at-large elections make it easier for the majority, even a slim majority, to take full control city councils, school boards, and other elected bodies. He says studies have shown that leaves minority groups without a voice.In an interview with 10News, he pointed out examples, including a claim that Hispanic voters did not have enough representation in Encintas, and a claim that voters in the southern portion of Poway have disproportionally less power than those in other parts of Poway."District elections are just a more fair system," Shenkman says. 1974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When professors at San Diego City College weren't prepping for fall semester, they were getting in on a little TikTok action thanks to English professor Christy Ball."I watched a lot of TikTok this summer, I fell in love with all the silliness in America and I really needed it when all the bad news was coming and coming," Ball said.She teamed up with 30 of her colleagues "to let students know we understand this isn't the ideal learning environment but that we believe in them, and we are so committed to their success and we're going to work with them the whole way." Together, they created a 2-minute TikTok-inspired clip with messages like "We're in this together," "You're not alone," and "We are listening."The video's editor and SDCC English professor Kevin Gossett said, "Putting something out like this is a good reminder that we're ready for this. We've been doing months and months of training in so many different ways just for this moment to support you."Gossett said it took a few weeks to edit the video but the hardest part was teaching writers how to TikTok."I did zoom recording sessions where I was walking them step-by-step. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video of a mystery car prowler is helping bring neighbors in Allied Gardens together.Along Estrella Avenue early Friday morning, Thomas Arevalo found his 2010 Honda Accord missing from the street in front of his home. Inside the trunk were hundreds of dollars worth of equipment belonging to the Rock Church baseball ministry.When one neighbor learned of the theft, he searched through his surveillance video and saw something suspicious. Just before 5 a.m., just feet away from where that car was parked, was a man wearing a hat and holding a skateboard, going from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Just brazen with not a care in the world.
