SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man died after being shot in the Talmadge area early Friday morning, San Diego police said.According to police, the shooting was reported around 3:25 a.m. near Euclid Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard, east of Interstate 15.When officers arrived on scene, they found a 33-year-old Black male with upper body wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.A witness said the shooter possibly fled in the victim's vehicle, described only as a dark-colored sedan.The circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation, and no suspect description was immediately available.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man was left feeling helpless after he spots a burglar inside his home on Christmas Eve while he was on the other side of the country. Tyler Luna was visiting family in Mississippi when he wanted to check on a recent gift from a client. He got a red flower that is supposed to bloom on Christmas. Before he left, he set up surveillance cameras and placed the flower in a window nearby. He opened the app on his phone and saw the flower and a thief inside his home."Your heart sinks and its like what’s happening," Luna said. In a panic, Luna called 911 but the Mississippi dispatchers told him they couldn’t help. He flew home Christmas night and met with police immediately to file a police report. "It was very scary."When he went inside his home he found his class ring missing, his watch drawer empty of all watches, and some valuables in his nightstand, all gone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers.The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ... I hope this can inspire others to do little things to help the homeless or less fortunate. We need to help another," said Kvendru. 1987
