Mandy Lamay wants to go from renter to buyer, looking to close on her first property during the COVID-19 crisis.“I started right as the pandemic was hitting,” she said of her home search. “That was kind of my driving factor for buying a house.”Purchasing a property during a pandemic, however, has proven to be somewhat problematic for buyers like Lamay.“You have to be viewing the house day one it pops on the market,” she said. “If you’re actually interested, you have to put in an offer immediately.”This kind of competition has created all kinds of chaos across the country.“We are seeing this pent-up demand,” said Dr. Jessica Lautz, vice president of demographics and behavioral insights for the National Association of Realtors. “We’ve actually seen in every region on a national scale that home sales actually did increase.”Lautz says after two months of drastic decline during the coronavirus shutdown, pending home sales mounted a record rebound in May.“The month-over-month increase in pending home sales is the largest that we’ve recorded,” she said.That’s more than a 44% increase after seeing home sales drop to their lowest levels in nine-and-a-half years.“Buyers are rethinking their living situations,” Lautz said. “So, the demand is really hot and that’s going to drive up prices.”Also impacting prices are slow building, low inventory and low interest rates.Combine those factors with more Americans looking to move from big cities to smaller towns and Lautz believes America’s real estate market will be impacted even more.“People are reevaluating and saying, ‘I don’t want to live in a dense area, crowded city center, crowded blocks,’” she said. “Elevator living is just not the right thing for people today.”For Lamay, she’s locked in a 3.125% interest rate and says she may overpay for her first property, if it gives her a peace of mind.“And then hopefully I’ll have a big new yard for my dog and myself,” she said. 1948

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Government officials in Kentucky say they'll be investigating the city of Louisville's handling of the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor. The Louisville Metro Council's government oversight committee announced its intentions Monday. News outlets report the Metro Council's next meeting is scheduled for July 23. Jean Porter, a spokeswoman for Mayor Greg Fischer, says the mayor welcomes the review. Protesters have been calling for the officers involved in Taylor's death to be charged. Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was killed in her Louisville home in March by police who were serving a no-knock warrant in a drug investigation. Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson has been named the executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.Robinson is leaving his job as the New York Knicks' Vice President of Player Development and Minor League Operations, a position he's held since 2017, to take over for Jim Haney, who held the NABC position for 29 years.“I’m extremely honored and excited for this tremendous and vital opportunity,” said Robinson in a press release. “I’d like to thank the NABC, our Board of Directors, President Jamie Dixon, and the search committee for selecting me at such an important time for our membership, our players, and our game. MIAMI, Fla. – The extremely active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season came to an end Monday and coastal communities are breathing a sigh of relief.However, while the hurricane season officially concludes on Nov. 30, that doesn’t necessarily mean the United States is out of the woods. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says tropical storms may continue to develop past that day.Even without more storms, this season has been historic. We saw a record-breaking 30 named storms and 12 landfalling storms in the continental U.S., according to the NOAA. Before this year, the 2005 season held the record for the most named storms, with 28.Of this season’s 30 named storms, 13 of them became hurricanes, meaning winds were 74 mph or greater. Six of those were considered major hurricanes, with winds reaching at least 111 mph: Laura, Teddy, Delta, Epsilon, Eta, and Iota.Because the 2020 season got off to an early and rapid pace, officials quickly exhausted the 21-name Atlantic list when Wilfred formed in September.So, for only the second time in history, the Greek alphabet was used for the remainder of the season, extending through the ninth name in the list, Iota.“The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season ramped up quickly and broke records across the board,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D, acting NOAA administrator. “Our investments in research, forecast models, and computer technology allowed forecasters at the National Weather Service, and its National Hurricane Center, to issue forecasts with increasing accuracy, resulting in the advanced lead time needed to ensure that decision makers and communities were ready and responsive.”NOAA says this was the fifth consecutive year with an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with 18 above-normal seasons out of the past 26.Scientists attribute the increase in activity to the warm phase of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO), which NOAA says began in 1995 and has favored more, stronger and longer-lasting storms. These kinds of eras have historically lasted about 25 to 40 years.“As we correctly predicted, an interrelated set of atmospheric and oceanic conditions linked to the warm AMO were again present this year. These included warmer-than-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures and a stronger west African monsoon, along with much weaker vertical wind shear and wind patterns coming off of Africa that were more favorable for storm development. These conditions, combined with La Nina, helped make this record-breaking, extremely active hurricane season possible,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.Looking forward, the 2021 hurricane season will officially begin on June 1 and NOAA will issue its initial seasonal outlook in May. 2787
