The family of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, an Army soldier who was allegedly killed by a fellow soldier and his girlfriend, met with President Donald Trump on Thursday.Guillen's family began the day with a morning march on the National Mall in support of a military-focus sexual harassment bill bearing her name. The family and their attorney later met with the President at the White House. The event was closed to the press."It hit me very hard," Trump said later Tuesday about meeting with Guillen's family, according to CBS News. "We didn't want this to be swept under the rug."Guillen was last seen on April 22 at Fort Hood, Texas, where she had been stationed. On June 30, Guillen's dismembered remains were found on the banks of a nearby river.Hours later, a suspect in the case, Spc. Aaron Robinson died by suicide during a standoff with police. Robinson's girlfriend, Cecily Ann Aguilar, was later charged with assisting in hiding Guillen's body. Aguilar has pleaded not guilty.Guillen's family maintains that she had been sexually harassed by Robinson and others prior to her disappearance. They claim she did not report the abuse to her superior officers because she feared retribution. While an investigation into sexual harassment against Guillen remains open, the Army has not yet confirmed the family's claims. According to ABC News, the Army has confirmed that Guillen may have been harassed, but it was not of a sexual nature. The bill for which Guillen's family was marching, the #IAmVanessaGuillen Bill, would allow military members to file harassment claims with third-party agencies instead of within their chain of command."We will not accept anything less than justice for Vanessa," Attorney Natalie Khawam said, according to KPRC-TV in Houston. "When someone volunteers to serve our country, they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect by their fellow service members. This bill will help us provide the protection and respect to others that was denied to Vanessa." 1995

The former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd and three other officers accused of aiding and abetting in his death are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.Derek Chauvin is facing a second-degree murder charge for pinning Floyd to the ground and pressing his knee down on his neck. Floyd pleaded that he couldn't breathe, but Chauvin continued to press down for nearly eight minutes, according to bystander video. Two autopsies were performed and both ruled the death a homicide, although there were differences in what caused Floyd's death. The three other officers, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, will also appear in court Monday. Keung, Lane and Thao will appear in person, while Chauvin will appear via video conference.Their appearances are scheduled to take place around midday on Monday. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill has ruled that cameras cannot be present in the courtroom for pretrial hearings, though it remains to be seen if cameras will be allowed in the courtroom during the trial itself.Floyd's death prompted worldwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism. 1144

The Department of Labor reported Thursday that 1.5 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending June 13, bringing a 13-week total to about 45 million claims.Thursday's figures were down about 58,000 from last week's unemployment filings.Weekly claims for unemployment have been falling for nearly three straight months after peaking at about 6 million a week in late March. But weekly unemployment claims remain historically high.Prior to the pandemic, the record high for weekly unemployment claims came in 2006, when 665,000 people filed for unemployment. The Department of Labor has been tracking the statistics since 1967.Economists often use weekly unemployment claims as a reliable tool when predicting unemployment. However, some surveys indicate that initial weekly claims may be underestimating the amount of those unemployed. At least one survey from the Economic Policy Institute found that millions of Americans gave up trying to seek benefits or didn't even attempt to due to states' overwhelmed and antiquated unemployment systems.Until recently, the stock market has been on a steady rise since March despite the staggering unemployment numbers. However, fears of the virus's resurgence caused the market to fall 600 points last week before recovering slightly this week. 1327

The FBI said on Tuesday that cybercriminals and foreign actors are attempting to influence the upcoming election.According to the FBI, “Foreign actors and cybercriminals could create new websites, change existing websites, and create or share corresponding social media content to spread false information in an attempt to discredit the electoral process and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.”Beyond attempts to influence the vote, the FBI says these actors are attempting to sow distrust in the electoral system. The FBI in particular warns that cybercriminals could take advantage of the likelihood several states will need additional time to count ballots due to increased mail-in voting and social distancing protocols. While a delay in results does not indicate any wrongdoing, the FBI warns that foreign actors could attempt to spread misinformation to cause distrust in the system while votes are being tallied.Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The FBI offered the following recommendations to voters:Seek out information from trustworthy sources, such as state and local election officials; verify who produced the content; and consider their intent.Verify through multiple reliable sources any reports about problems in voting or election results, and consider searching for other reliable sources before sharing such information via social media or other avenues. For information about final election results, rely on state and local government election officials.Report potential election crimes—such as disinformation about the manner, time, or place of voting—to the FBI.If appropriate, make use of in-platform tools offered by social media companies for reporting suspicious posts that appear to be spreading false or inconsistent information about election-related problems or results. 3236

The Cheektowaga, New York mother whose battle with breast cancer captured the hearts of many Western New Yorkers has died. Libby Gaymon, 43, passed away Tuesday. She had faced breast cancer twice in less than two years. In May, Libby's daughter Alexis asked her mom to be her date to the senior prom at McKinley High School in Buffalo. The surprise promposal was a well-coordinated effort between Alexis, her family and McKinley administrators. Alexis wanted to bring her mother because Libby didn't get to go to the prom when she was in school. On prom night, dozens of supporters of Libby packed the Gaymons' front lawn, some spilling onto the sidewalk and neighboring lawns to cheer on the mother-daughter duo.McKinley High School donated a limousine, while other community members offered free wig services, makeup application and corsage supply to make the night even more special. Most recently, Gaymon tried an experimental immunotherapy treatment at Roswell Park. Immunotherapy helps the body’s immune system attack cancer cells. It is still being studied nationwide to see if it can play a role in treating metastatic breast cancer.   Her message she shared with Buffalo-based WKBW anchor Ashley Rowe in September was clear: slow down and take time to appreciate the world around you, or else you’ll miss everything.“You’re walking down the street on the phone, either you’re on the phone or you’re texting and you’re not even seeing your surroundings," Libby said. "You’re not seeing if you walk past flowers, or if you walk past somebody smiling back at you, but you’re too busy on your phone.  You guys are letting life pass you by.”  1681
