BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Drought-hit regions in northern China are forecast to have moderate to heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday, the National Meteorological Center said Tuesday.     The regions include Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region where more than 200,000 livestock have died due to drought, Heilongjiang Province where 1.47 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought, Liaoning and Jilin provinces.     A severe drought has hit China's northern part, affecting 11.33million hectares of crops, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     Among the total affected crops, 4.2 million hectares suffered serious drought and 1.07 million hectares dried up. About 3.9 million people and about 4.37 million livestock had difficulties getting water.     Yuan Zipeng, deputy director of the Liaoning provincial observatory, said the long-anticipated rain would "obviously" relieve the two-month-long drought that led to drinking water shortages for 792,200 people and 242,200 livestock in the province.     In order to increase the rainfall, the provincial bureau has prepared 1,269 rocket shells along with three aircraft to seed the clouds, Yuan said.     In Liaoning alone, 32 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought.     The water resources department in Inner Mongolia said 1.89 million people and 4.27 million livestock faced drinking water shortages. More than 200,000 livestock died as 71 percent of the region's pastures were severely hit by drought.     Qinggele, a herdsman in Bayan Zhuoer, Inner Mongolia, said his family had to use donkeys to carry water 15 km away.     Authorities in Inner Mongolia made artificial rain more than 1,000 times as the region saw the worst drought in the past 50 years. Officials also helped residents find more water sources and build more water-saving and irrigation projects.     Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged government agencies to place "top priority" on anti-drought efforts during his tour of the drought-hit regions in Liaoning, Inner Mongolia and Jilin on Monday and Tuesday.     Local governments were also urged to expand irrigation by speeding up construction of reservoirs and properly conducting artificial precipitation as "the drought took place in major grain production bases at the key maturity period for crops, which will greatly affect agriculture production".

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday urged the country's senior officials to take the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New China as a new start for carrying on its modernization drive while maintain social stability.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when presiding over the 16th group study for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, which was themed on understanding and practicing the socialist modernization since the founding of New China.     "Many important revelations come up if we look back on how the Party has led people on the path of socialist modernization," said Hu, stressing the importance of upholding economic development as the central task and promoting comprehensive and sustainable development.     Hu stressed the study of the principle of "freeing our mind, seeking truth from facts, be united and look ahead", which was put forward by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.     Hu said that policies regarding reform should be scientific and the methods of practicing these policies should be well-coordinated. Such reform policies should cover economy, politics, culture, society and all other aspects.     Hu emphasized on ensuring social stability while deepening reform.     "Without stability, nothing can be done and even those we have achieved will be lost. We should pay special attention to conflicts occurring among people and solve them properly," he said, adding that various issues that affect social stability should be coped with carefully to ensure people's livelihood.     Hu urged all study members to regard the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China as a new starting point to deepen socialist modernization and made new achievements in building a well-off society.

DAMASCUS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Thursday that Syria is willing to enhance cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefits.     Moallem made the pledge during a meeting with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest situation in the Middle East region.     Wu reiterated that China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions. URUMQI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of foreign diplomats in China on Thursday visited Shihezi city in northwest China' s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, voicing their appreciation to the development model of the city.     Shihezi city, some 150 km northwest of Urumqi, is a young city which was established in the 1950s in the gobi of Xinjiang. With the development of some 60 years, the city has become one of the most developed cities in the autonomous region.     In the early phase of the city' s development, Shihezi focused on reclaiming land in the desert for agriculture.
