BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday sent a message of sympathy to his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari over a major earthquake that has killed at least 160 people in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province.     Hu said in the message that he was shocked upon hearing the news of the earthquake and felt pain over the great casualties and property loss in Pakistan. BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will inject more funds for investment and improve investment structures to better cope with adverse global economic conditions, the State Council (Cabinet) decided at an executive meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday.     To achieve "steady and relative fast" economic growth and prevent "economic ups and downs" amid global and domestic economic challenges was on top of the country's agenda, said Wen.     The government on Sunday announced it would launch a stimulus package estimated at 4 trillion yuan (570 billion U.S. dollars) to be spent over the next two years to finance programs in 10 major areas, such as low-income housing, rural infrastructure, water, electricity, transport, the environment and technological innovation.     "The country should strengthen management of large-scale investment projects, conduct feasibility studies in an earnest manner and increase investment efficiencies and profits," said a statement from the meeting, in which provincial leaders and Cabinet ministers participated.     Wen said the stimulus package was crucial to tiding over the difficulties and maintaining long-term economic growth momentum.     He urged local governments to be "quick" and "effective" in carrying out these measures with "large-scale" investment programs launched to boost domestic demand.     The meeting participants called for more efforts to increase incomes and consumption capabilities, raising low-income earnings, promoting the "stable and healthy" development of the property sector and maintaining steady export growth.     The country should endeavor to enhance competitiveness, improve financial macro-management and facilitate the steady and healthy development of the stock market.     China announced on Sunday that it would adopt "active" fiscal and "moderately active" monetary policies to expand domestic demand and speed up construction of public facilities.     The meeting also decided to push forward a series of key reforms, including restructuring the value-added tax regime, which could cut the tax burden on enterprises by 120 billion yuan next year.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki exchanged views over the phone Friday on promoting further development of bilateral relations in 2009 and international and regional issues of common concern.     On the situation in the Gaza Strip, Yang said China is seriously concerned and deeply worried about the grave humanitarian crisis caused by the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.     China has made unremitting efforts to promote adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a relevant resolution on Gaza, Yang said.     He said China welcomes and supports U.N. Security Council Resolution 1860 and urges all the parties concerned to fully honor the resolution, cease fire immediately, ensure smooth operation of humanitarian assistance and promote an early relaxation of the humanitarian crisis taking place in Gaza.     China has always proposed that the issue of Palestine be resolved through political negotiation on the basis of related U.N. resolutions, the "Land for Peace" principle and the Arab Peace Initiative, he added.

   KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here Saturday evening on a four-day official visit.     Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that he is delighted to pay an official visit to Kuwait, noting that the relationship between China and Kuwait, especially in the fields of trade, energy, finance and culture, has witnessed remarkable growth since the two forged diplomatic relations in 1971. BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), stressed the importance of strengthening national unity under the new situation Wednesday at a national conference on ethnic work.     Jia urged participants to seriously study and implement the recent instructions of Hu Jintao, state president and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     "Firmly hold to the main theme of a common unity and progress for all ethnic groups and closely center on task of promoting national unity and achieving a common progress for all ethnic groups," said the CPPCC chairman, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his speech, the top political advisor called for persisting in upholding socialism with China's own characteristics and firmly taking the road toward resolving ethnic problems with China's own characteristics; persisting in implementing a scientific concept of development and making efforts to promote a sound and fast economic and social development for ethnic groups and minority areas; persisting in and perfecting ethnic regional autonomy and make substantial efforts to protect the legal rights of ethnic minorities; and persisting in the fundamental demand for promoting social harmony and ceaselessly consolidating and developing an equal, united, mutually-supporting, and harmonious socialist national relations.     Strengthening national unity depends on the strengthening and improving of the Party leadership on the ethnic work, Jia stressed.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also addressed the conference. Different areas and departments should unify their thinking and action to Hu's instructions as well as the major decisions and arrangements made by the Central Authorities, said the official, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     The meeting was presided over by Du Qinglin, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and director of the United Front Department of the CPC Central Committee.     Present at the meeting were heads of provincial level United Front departments and ethnic work commissions from across the country.
