Just over 1 million people filed new jobless claims last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s latest report released Thursday. Another 14.5 million people filed continuing claims, leaving unemployment in the U.S. still startlingly high.Amid high unemployment across the country, a new report is showing executive compensation is growing as CEOs continue to cut millions of jobs.“We find that a CEO now earns about 320 times that of a typical worker in their main industry,” said Lawrence Mishel, a labor economist and distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, an independent think tank in Washington D.C.Mishel just authored a report analyzing CEO compensation. That report shows how in March and April when some CEOs were reported to have cut their salaries during the economic downturn, it wasn’t as big of a sacrifice as it seemed.“Salaries make up about 5 percent of CEO compensation packages,” explained Mishel. “And it seems like when CEOs say they are making a sacrifice, it’s really, I think, is better for press releases than in that they are actually going to take a cut in their standard of living.”The report shows how CEO compensation growth is affecting workers everywhere.“If you look at CEO compensation since, back over the last four decades since 1978, CEO compensation grew 1,167 percent,” said Mishel. “The compensation of a typical worker grew 13 to 14 percent over that period.”The report shows CEO compensation increased by 14 percent just last year and is set to continue to go up this year, even in a recession with companies having to let go of millions of workers.“The wages of the vast majority, the bottom 90 percent, has grown only half as fast as it otherwise would have had the top 1 percent not really expanded like it did,” Mishel explained.Essentially the “profit pie” has not grown proportionate to CEO compensation growth. So, as CEOs are getting significantly higher compensation, it is taking from the pay other workers.“I think this is a problem of corporate governance and our tax policies, and it needs to be addressed,” said Mishel.Proposed solutions include capping CEO compensation and taxing anything above the cap. With that help has come an increase in the number of women freezing eggs and embryos.The Centers for Disease Control recently released preliminary numbers for 2016, the latest data available for assisted reproductive technology, or ART, because it takes two years to finalize births and verify data.The data was collected from 463 reporting clinics in the US.There were 76,930 babies born in 2016 as a result of fertility treatments. About 11,000 of those were sets of twins.Of the 263,577 ART cycles (the two-week process of stimulating egg production with the intent to transfer embryos), 65,840 were done so to freeze all resulting eggs or embryos for future pregnancy attempts.The CDC points out the use of assisted reproductive technology is relatively rare, “its use has doubled over the past decade” resulting in 1.7 percent of all infants born in the United States every year are conceived using ART.One of the reporting clinics is Midwest Reproductive Center in Olathe, Kansas.Dr. Dan Gehlbach started the practice in 2004 and has been a reproductive endocrinologist for 25 years. He says he’s moved to almost exclusively freezing all embryos.“Once the data was clear that transferring an embryo soon after egg retrieval was not the optimum time for a transfer, and we could freeze an embryo and allow the uterus to recover from all the hormonal changes that had occurred, and then place the woman on a much lower dose of hormones that just prepare her uterus for an embryo to attach…then we were able to show an improvement in pregnancy rates by transferring a single embryo that had been frozen and thawed verses where we used to transfer two fresh embryos almost routinely,” said Dr. Gehlbach.Gehlbach says this is not only increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy, it is also lowering the risk of twins or triplets. JULIAN (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed in a crash near Julian on Saturday.California Highway Patrol officers headed to state Route 79 near Sunrise Highway about 1:50 p.m. for a report that a Toyota 4Runner had struck a motorcycle and pinned the rider underneath the vehicle, according to a CHP incident log.The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cal Fire San Diego. KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri says it is seeing a disturbing trend in child sexual assault cases.Children are abusing children."I think that was kind of shocking to us all as we were collecting this data, is that almost half of our perpetrators are minors," said Heidi Olson, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Coordinator.The SANE program's data shows perpetrators are likely to be between 11- and 15-years-old."Another thing we're noticing is a lot of those sexual assaults are violent sexual assaults, so they include physical violence in addition to sexual violence," said Jennifer Hansen, a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Mercy.Recently, the International Association of Forensic Nurses said the hospital is in the top five percent in the United States, which includes hospitals that see adults, in the volume of sexual assault victims they see.Last year, Children's Mercy saw 444 kids who were sexually abused within the last five days. That number rounds out to around 1,000 a year when they include the children who report sexual assault after five days.Victims are most likely girls around 4- to 8-years-old.Hansen and Olson say the number each year continues to rise. They can't pinpoint for sure if it's because Children's Mercy is a recognized children's facility with the capacity to serve more people, or if more children are reporting the assault now than in years past."To sexually assault someone else, that's a learned behavior," Olson said.Nurses are also finding more and more that pornography is playing a role in these cases. That can include a victim being forced to see porn, a victim reporting that the perpetrator said they'd watched porn, being forced to do something shown in a pornographic video, or a victim being recorded doing a sexual act.Hansen and Olson say they're noticing kids are being exposed to porn at very young ages, around 4- or 5-years-old. They say a child can develop unrealistic and dangerous ideas about intimate relationships by being exposed to violent, graphic porn."We know that it's probably multi-factorial. I think there are lots of things that contribute to this, but that is the question; How are we, as a society, failing in such a way that we have 11, 12, and 14-year-old boys, primarily, committing violent sexual assaults?"
