SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An audit released by the San Diego Police Department Thursday showed they had purged 58 names from their registry of gang members. The names are collected in a database known as CalGang. 42 of the records were cleared because they had passed a 5-year purge mark. Four of the people had died and 12 had been removed due to unrevealed “discretionary” reasons. The results were released at a special joint meeting of the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee and the Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention. At the meeting, Dr. Rodney Hood, the chair of the gang commission also unveiled their annual report. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-based biotech company appears to be making huge strides with its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after testing it on monkeys.Inovio Pharmaceuticals is one of more than 100 companies working on a vaccine. It’s one of few to make it to human clinical trials.“We’re much closer to finding a safe and effective vaccine,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, the VP of Research and Development for Inovio. “We’re so excited and feel so confident about the results we’ve got both in animals and our human clinical trials.”Broderick said clinical trials had shown positive results regarding the safety of Inovio’s experimental vaccine.“Our phase one has been our U.S. based trial, and we’re about to start a trial in China,” she said. “We really are looking to test the vaccine all over the world. The immune responses that these people have generated after getting the vaccine, we’re so pleased with those because they’re really broad.”She said the latest positive development came from testing the vaccine on monkeys in what’s called an Animal Challenge Study.“Those monkeys received their vaccine, then just after four months later they received the virus itself, we were able to show they were protected from that,” she said. “What we were able to show in the lungs, and the nose is that those monkeys really were protected from the symptoms of COVID-19.”It will take some time to ensure all testing is done correctly, and the potential vaccine is safe before it is given to the general public.“Realistically we should be looking at a vaccine being available for certain members of the public at the end of 2021,” she said. “Most vaccines historically take 5 to 10 years to be generated and developed; this is really a short time frame.”Broderick, a busy working mom with two young kids at home, hopes the positive results will ease the minds of those anxiously waiting to get back to normal.“I do just want to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel; there is hope out there,” she said. “Our vaccine is looking very promising there’s other vaccines out there that are looking very good.” 2123

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All orphaned dogs and nearly all cats at the Helen Woodward Animal Center found a home for the holidays, the center announced Thursday. A total of 64 dogs and 35 cats were adopted between December 17 and 23. The “Home 4 the Holidays” campaign started in 1999 in an effort to encourage winter-season pet seekers to choose adoption. Empty kennels give the center the opportunity to save more animals. A new group of orphaned dogs and cats are being transported to the center and will arrive before January. “This is like a little Christmas miracle,” explained Center Operations Director Jennifer Shorey. “We are delighted to help extend this bit of magic into the New Year.” 699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Starbucks that played a key role in redeveloping North Park will soon serve its last drink.Carly Clegg is a regular at the Starbucks next to The Observatory North Park."It's a bummer," said Clegg.The collection of notes posted inside the Starbucks tell the story: Customers bidding farewell to their Starbucks. It will close up for good Saturday. The apparent reason for the closing is one regular Robert Green knows well. Several customers who have asked employees why it's closing have been told an increase in homeless individuals are turning off customers, leading to a decline in sales."There are people camped out there all day. I noticed an uptick starting about five years ago," said Green."When I have family and friends that come in, they walk by and say, 'Let's go to another one,'" Clegg added.The closing comes some seven months after Starbucks announced customers would no longer be required to buy something to use the restroom or hang out. Critics said the policy could attract more homeless. Closures like this one are likely to add fuel to the debate."You hate for this business to go out with a whimper," said Green.The Starbucks opened up 13 years ago during the renovation of the North Park Theatre. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A search was underway Friday for eight service members who disappeared in the waters off San Clemente Island after a training exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV).One Marine died following the training accident and two were in critical condition at a hospital.The accident is the third time in less than 10 years that someone has been injured or died in an AAV during training. Colonel with a background in intelligence and amphibious reconnaissance, says one of the most difficult operations in the military is amphibious operations."There is an inherent danger because every once in a while those things will take on water and if they do you've got a lot of marines trapped in a vehicle and it's going to be very difficult to get everyone out safely," Kempfer said.In 2017, 15 Marines were injured during a training exercise when an AAV caught fire. In 2011, a Marine was killed when an AAV sank off the coast near Camp Pendleton."It does happen, that when you go into the water things will leak. There's hatches all over the vehicle on top, in back the crew has hatches," Kempfer says.Injuries during training exercises aren't specific to amphibious assault vehicles.
