CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista is launching a new pedestrian safety initiative after seeing a sharp increase in fatal crashes last year.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, nine pedestrians were killed in 2017 on city streets. That’s up 125% from 2016.In the first three months of 2018 there have already been three fatal pedestrian crashes, a 200% increase from the same period last year. Police say it's the first time in four years they’ve had more than one pedestrian killed within the first quarter of the year.The map below shows those killed in auto-pedestrian crashes between January of 2017 to March of 2018. In an effort to combat the trend and educate the public, the city unveiled a new campaign on Thursday called “Stay Safe Chula Vista.”To kick off the program they have named April as “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.” The Chula Vista Police Department along with the Fire Department and Department of Traffic Engineering will be working together on enforcement and education.CVPD will have increased patrols targeting both drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. Along with the ticket, violators may also relieve pamphlets with information on the “Stay Safe Chula Vista” campaign. Of the nine fatal collisions in 2017, CVPD said pedestrians were found to be at fault in seven of them.The announcement came a little over a month after a 90-year-old man was killed while crossing the street.RELATED: 90-year-old dies hit, killed by two cars in Chula Vista Police say the man was crossing East H Street when he wasn’t supposed to when he was struck and killed.Similarly, in January of 2018, a 94-year-old man was hit and killed on the 1500 block of Third Avenue. (KGTV) - A fire in a drainage tunnel had Chula Vista firefighters donning protective masks Thursday.The fire broke out about 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Eastlake Parkway and Otay Lakes Road, near the Vons and Lowe's shopping centers. It was quickly knocked down."Witnesses reported smoke billowing from a storm drain and several people running from the area," Chula Vista Fire IAFF local 2180 officials posted on twitter. "Please give our firefighters room while they work."The Chula Vista Fire Department said juveniles started the fire in the drain and left the area. No one was hurt.Officials are searching for two teens who may be involved in the incident.Firefighters are battling a tunnel fire off of Otay Lakes Road. Chobani is the latest company this year to raise its minimum wage to an hour.In a press release, Chobani's CEO and Founder Hamdi Ulukaya announced on Monday that the change would happen during the first quarter of 2021."This moment of uncertainty is a call for us to join together to strengthen communities and support those working tirelessly to make the food on the tables of families across America," said Ulukaya in the news release. "Businesses should serve the people and communities in which they operate. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the suspects accused of stabbing a 15-year-old to death as he tried to defend his friend at a Chula Vista birthday party in late January. According to police, the stabbing took place on January 31 on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista. Police say an argument broke out between two teenagers. The argument later turned physical and, as the 15-year-old -- identified by friends as Devin Griffiths -- tried to help a friend being attacked by several men, he was stabbed in the upper body, according to police. RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaGriffiths was taken to the hospital with critical injuries where he later died on February 16. According to police, he “passed away with his family at his side.”Police say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. Investigators believe there is a likelihood witnesses used their cell phones to record the incident and are asking anyone with video to come forward. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950
