SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lego fans will have more to look forward to in 2019, as Legoland California plans new attractions in celebration of its 20th birthday.Among one of the park's 2019 offerings: Free admission for kids 12 and under on their birthday, starting in January."Having a chance to reflect on the last 20 years ahead of next year’s birthday celebration, it’s incredible to think about all we’ve accomplished during that time and the amount of kids we positively impacted through their experiences at the Resort," said park General Manager Peter Ronchetti.RELATED: Southern California theme parks ring in the holiday seasonAmong the new additions for 2019, Legoland said it plans to add new attractions and live shows for visitors to experience.One new addition will be a new attraction inspired by "The Lego Movie." The park will host special "Lego Movie" festivities from Feb. 16 - 17 and 23 - 24 around the park ahead of the attraction's opening.The park's resort is also getting a special zone geared toward toddlers modeled after Duplo. The play town will add an express train in the park and kids will be able to ride, slide, and hide in the interactive area.Also being added is a "Lego 4D-Officer in Pursuit" film that will play at the park's theater and new live character shows at the Miniland Stage.It's not exactly clear when the new additions would be opened to guests in 2019. 1458

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. But the decision largely rests on the shoulders of general manager A.J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like so many businesses throughout San Diego County, businesses along the border in San Ysidro are also preparing to scale back operations because of the state's COVID-19 purple tier.Businesses in the border region have already seen a significant decline in business because of international travel restrictions currently in place. Since March, the border has been closed to all tourist travel, only open for essential needs, like going to work or getting medical care. Tuetano Taqueria is one of the businesses affected. Just blocks from the border, its owners are doing everything it can to stay open. The trendy taco shop is run by Fernando Covarrubias and his wife, Chef Priscilla Curiel. During the initial stay-at-home order, the couple had to lay off their employees and run the business themselves. The taqueria was recently honored, making the Michelin Guide, famous for it's tacos served with the option of bone marrow on the side. Now, the owners are getting ready to scale back to takeout orders because of the purple tier restrictions. According to the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, from March to July, roughly 100 businesses closed permanently. Jason Wells, the chamber's executive director, said the border travel restrictions are devastating the region. Wells said all businesses in the area are hurting, but retail has taken the biggest hit. According to Wells, about 95% of customers in the area are from Mexico.Wells explained that most of the businesses along the border make their biggest profits during the holidays, and the state's purple tier isn't helping. If the border travel restrictions continue, Wells thinks more businesses will not survive. Covarrubias and his wife are hoping people will follow the health guidelines so COVID-19 case rates go down and business can get back to full operation. Despite their struggles, the couple is working on opening a second business in National City, called Mujer Divina, a coffee shop that will also serve burritos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families.
