BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) issued a circular on Friday banning the use of Nimesulide, an anti-inflammatory drug, for children under the age of 12, considering potential side-effects such as liver and kidney damage.Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that first became available in Italy in 1985. It is now used in more than 50 countries and regions.The drug entered Chinese markets in 1997.According to the SFDA, while common adverse reactions to the drug include vomiting and stomache, domestic and overseas statistics indicate that more severe issues are related to the drug, such as blood coagulation disorders, decreased white blood cells and damage to liver and kidney.Previously, the SFDA only prevented the use of the drug among children one year old or younger.Also on Friday, the SFDA ordered the suspension of the production, sales and use of Duxil (almitrine and raubasine compound) due to its "unobvious" efficacy.According to the SFDA, clinical research found "little" evidence proving the drug effectively improves the cognitive ability for patients suffering vascular cognitive impairment.The drug was supposed to treat symptoms related to cognition and sensory nerve damage.The moves came after a two-month nationwide campaign was launched earlier this month to probe the quality of essential drugs and ensure drug safety.Official figures show that China's National Center for Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring received 692,904 reports of adverse reactions in 2010, up 8.4 percent compared with those in 2009.Among the total, 109,991 cases involved new or severe adverse reactions, a year-on-year increase of 16.2 percent.

CHENGDU, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Over the crowds of holiday shoppers in China's big stores this Spring Festival lingers an atmosphere of suspicion.With charges of price deception hanging over the big chains of Carrefour and Wal-Mart and local authorities moving to levy fines, many Chinese -- normally averse to be pinching pennies during the Lunar New Year -- are checking their receipts at the tills.The New Year, which falls on Feb. 3 this year, is normally a time of largesse and excess -- all the more reason why many shoppers feel so betrayed.Customers can be seen recording label prices in notebooks or calculating their final bill on their mobile phones as they walk the aisles.At outlets of Carrefour and Wal-Mart in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, the check out queues have grown as customers doublecheck prices at the tills."I would never have imagined global firms would do this intentionally and I have to be cautious," said a woman surnamed Wang, after shopping at a foreign-owned supermarket in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.With three bulging shopping bags, Wang stood next to the check out to calculate the final bill: "We buy a lot for the New Year celebrations, so I have to be more careful."The official weeklong Spring Festival holiday, which starts Wednesday, is China's closest equivalent to the West's Christmas shopping season, with generous gifts of food, tobacco, liquor and other presents for family and friends.According to the Ministry of Commerce, China's retail sales hit 340 billion yuan (49.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the Spring Festival holiday week last year."The deceptive pricing practices of the two foreign-funded supermarket giants were a total scandal," said Wang. It is a time for family reunions, gift giving and fireworks.It will be even merrier for the survivors of the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, who just moved into their new homes in the new town.The earthquake survivors are preparing for the first Spring Festival in their new homes.Xia Tianfeng of Beichuan County, Mianyang City, is sticking red paper decorations onto the windows of her new house for good luck in the New Year."We finally have our new house. Why wouldn't I be happy?" asked Xia.She and her family lived in a makeshift house for two years before moving into their new house one month ago.Dong Depa, 43, and his family moved into their new house in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the quake, five days ago."I can pay off the debt incurred to build the house in two years," said Dong, who spent only 30,000 yuan (4,541 U.S. dollars) for the house's construction and decoration, with the rest being shouldered by the government.Dong lost his two children in the quake but he and his wife have since had another child, a son."Last year, we spent the Spring Festival in the dormitory of the brick factory where I work as a cook. Now we can finally enjoy the festival in our own home," said Dong, unable to conceal his joy.Xia told Xinhua the ceremony for the new county seat was the real taste for a happy new year.Reconstruction has finished in the quake-hit zones in Sichuan, with most survivors now in their new houses.In Beichuan County alone, 96.5 percent of the survivors already have their new house.The new county seat is located in Yongchang Town, about 23 kilometers from the quake-leveled old one.The 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on May 12, 2008, leaving about 80,000 people dead or missing.Waving goodbye to their temporary barracks, 7,397 households have been allocated new apartments, among which 3,504 households were former Beichuan residents, while others were from different Wenchuan earthquake-hits regions."The new apartment has already been simply decorated by the time I received the door key. With our new furniture, we can wait no longer to move into the home," said 45-year-old Xie Xinghe, a former resident of Beichuan.Including 50,000 yuan (about 7,575 U.S. dollars) in loans, Xie paid a preferential price of 79,600 yuan (about 12,000 U.S dollars) for the 100 square meter new apartment.Losing his only son in the earthquake, Xie and his wife adopted a one-year-old boy."It is the child who brings me new hope for the future," Xie said.
