SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Pacific Beach alone relies on over 4,000 hospitality workers, often working overnight hours.Safety concerns while on the job, closing up, or walking home are an unfortunate reality of the industry.“When you’re out there, and it’s dark, and you can’t see any one thing around you, I can’t tell you how vulnerable you feel, because you’re constantly looking around you," said Marian Novak, Director of the Responsible Hospitality Coalition.Novak has worked in Pacific Beach since 1991 and currently does responsible beverage training for servers.She and other hospitality workers signed up for a three-hour class with IMPACT Personal Safety, a nonprofit based out of Los Angeles committed to ending the cycle of violence.Organized by Discover Pacific Beach, workers were able to learn verbal strategies, awareness skills, and fighting skills.“When people are intoxicated, they literally don’t make the right decisions," said Lisa Gaeta, founder of IMPACT Personal Safety. “Our philosophy is that once you know you can physically defend yourself, then it’s easier to talk your way out. But if you’re afraid that you’re going to be hurt, it's not so easy, which is why we always teach fighting.”Attendees at the class say after just an hour they felt more confident and empowered. 1304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most San Diego voters support a sales tax for public transit improvements, according to a study commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit System and the San Diego Association of Governments. Poll results released Wednesday show more than two-thirds of voters are in favor of a dedicated half-cent sales tax measure to raise revenue for new projects, FM3 Research reported. The City of San Diego’s current sales tax is 7.75 percent. 44 percent of those surveyed said they were “definitely yes” in favor of the sales tax measure. 23 percent voted “probably yes”. 19 percent said they were “definitely no” on a tax hike increase, according to the study.The poll results are the first step in a discussion between transit officials and the public that are expected to take place through the end of 2019. MTS will review public input and propose a spending and financing plan. “We have significant public interest in bringing fast, safe, reliable public transit to San Diego and the region,” said San Diego County Supervisor and MTS Board Member Nathan Fletcher. “It is time to reimagine how our region moves by working together to create a transit strategy that connects our communities, reduces congestion, provides more transportation options and builds the foundation for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future. We have a lot of work to do, but we are encouraged by the results.” Transit upgrades and additions could include new trolley and bus routes, and safety enhancements, MTS officials said. “We are taking the next steps to creating a shared vision of the San Diego we want to see and this includes real choices in how residents move throughout their day,” said MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez. “We must be intentional and inclusive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma neighbors are rallying to save a beloved bike track - a track they've built with their own hands, but no permits. The track on Famosa and Nimitz Boulevards was threatened on Monday. “I rushed over here as quick as I could,” Darren Miller said.  “I stood in front of the tractor and said, “I’m sorry I can't let you keep doing this.”It’s still unclear who sent the bobcat to level the track. But - the land belongs to the San Diego Housing Commission.Miller is a parent of two boys and says he started building the track last March after coming across the empty land. He added the jumps and curves, thinking it would become a sort of secret playground.“I thought myself and a couple of other dads involved would have a small little track that or six or seven kids knew about. I had no idea that this many people loved it,” he said.Monday night several families showed up for a rally to save the park, expressing their affinity for the neighborhood track. “This is the most awesome-est place in the world,” eight-year-old Jude Hudson said, “So much fun because there are some bumps and curves.”Parents agree.“We don’t want this to go. This a good place to be and to exercise and to keep them off their phones." Jon Erb said. "You got parents that come out here on a daily basis, so you got chaperones down here and keeps them away from drugs.”When 10News asked what the deal with the empty land was, the San Diego Housing Commission sent the following statement:“An unauthorized and unpermitted makeshift bike park was set up by unknown individuals on the undeveloped property that is owned by the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) at the corner of Famosa and Nimitz Boulevard.Some of the no trespassing signs placed on the property by SDHC have been removed. Without sufficient insurance, SDHC, a public agency, cannot allow the property to be used as a bike park.The property is being planned to be developed as affordable housing.  We are pleased to be working with the Community Planning Group on the future development of affordable housing at this site.” 2143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Ocean Beach are coming together to help raise money for the owner of ACE surfboards whose workshop went up in flames Tuesday afternoon. Albert Elliott's hand-shaped creations were well known in the San Diego area and news of the fire spread quickly. He believes the fire started after the battery on his electric bike ignited. Elliott says much of what was inside was one of a kind and irreplaceable. Although he did have insurance, he isn't sure what it will cover. A Gofundme account has been started to help Elliott and his wife try to rebuild. There is also a clean up at the Elliott's home set for Saturday August 10 at 11 a.m. 674
