A rare celestial event is about to take place over the morning skies of the United States on Monday involving the Sun and the planet Mercury. According to NASA, Mercury will pass directly between the Sun and Earth, causing a small part of the Sun to be obscured by Mercury’s shadow. Although the effect is similar to a solar eclipse — where the moon passes between the Sun and Earth — traditional solar eclipse glasses will not work for Monday’s transit. Whereas the moon is capable of blocking all of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth, Mercury’s size and distance means only a fraction of the Sun will be blocked. That does not mean you’re out of luck. More than 60 astronomical groups across the United States will host viewing parties to allow the public to witness the rare celestial event. A telescope with a solar filter will make it possible for people to witness the transit. The transit will begin around 7:35 a.m. ET on Monday and last over 5 hours. For those in the western half of the U.S., the transit will last for a few hours after sunrise, allowing for most Americans the opportunity to witness the transit. A Wisconsin family is sending out pleas for help after their infant son was told he has just weeks to live without a new liver. Marcus Albers was born in October. His mother says there were complications with his pregnancy but he came out no worse for wear. However, he was diagnosed with Immunodeficiency 47; an extremely rare disorder that attacked his liver. "It's extremely rare," Whitney McLean, the boy's mother said. "From what we've been told, there are 12 cases in the world." Extremely rare but in this family twice. McLean says her two-year-old son Dominic also has the genetic disorder but it's not nearly as severe. "[Dominic] is on the liver transplant list but his condition isn't as critical," McLean said. The family found out about the disorder during the pregnancy with Marcus. McLean found out she was a carrier for the disease and there was no way she could have known because it's only present in boys. "My grandmother had all girls," McLean said. "My mom had all girls and we had two boys. My sister had a baby and it was a girl."Basically, McLean says because she's a carrier, she has one X-chromosome with the disorder and one without. Males have both an X and Y chromosome so she had a 50/50 chance of her son's having the disorder. If she had daughters, her family still wouldn't have any idea. "In the back of our minds, we were concerned of liver issues because of our oldest son," McLean said. "They started taking labs and they started to go in the wrong direction."Marcus' liver began to fail just about three weeks ago. An MRI showed significant liver damage. "We have been here ever since," McLean said. "He's already very resilient. There have been a lot of labs and what he's gone through, I don't think a lot of adults could handle. He's very resilient."McLean knows resiliency in a hospital setting. She's a nurse at Froedtert. So while she's encouraged by his strength at just five-months-old, her experience shows her how dire this situation is. "We were told Marcus has weeks to live and that was a week and a half ago," she said. "So it's pretty dire."That is, unless he gets a liver donation. The liver is one of many organs which can be donated by a living donor. In 2018, there were 36,518 organ donations in the United States. According to the U.S. Government Information on Organ Donation and Transplantation, this included kidneys (21,167), liver (8,250), heart (3,408), lung (2,530), kidney/pancreas (835), pancreas (192), intestine (104) and heart/lung (32).There were only 7,000 live donor transplants last year which accounted for less than 20 percent of all donations. Outside of heart transplants, most other transplants could have used a willing live donor. So more than 90 percent of the 2018 transplants could have potentially used a live donor. Something Marcus' family is praying for. "We don't have a lot of time," McLean said. "We need people who are serious and strict to the criteria. If you are serious and want to help us, we will take the help."The checklist is pretty extensive but not impossible. A St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, family is questioning why a man is still in jail despite being acquitted on murder charges. Davien Bell was set free in October after he was acquitted in connection with a fatal shooting from March 2016, but shortly after he was released he was brought back into custody.Two months later he's still in jail. "He spent three years and eight months in prison..wrongfully," Bell's uncle Chanse Joubert said. Bell's family says those years are moments they can't get back. However, in October when Bell was set free they were hoping they could make new memories."He was free off all charges," Joubert said. "The next morning we received a phone call that he needed to go back to jail and be released properly." However, Bell hasn't been released. According to the District Attorney, he's being held on other pending charges. "On March 21, 2016 Damien Bell was arrested at the Yambilee building on theft and possession of an illegal firearm," Joubert said. "Two days later his father received a phone call that he needed to report to an interrogation station because they had evidence connecting him to the homicide." "He's been acquitted of murder charges and they're still detaining him based on something he allegedly did," Bell's mother Michelle Joubert said. "They could've handled that in court, during the three years he was there and they didn't."According to the D.A., it wasn't until after Bell's release that they realized he had pending charges.
