SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One Comic-Con tradition for many has been donating blood every year through the San Diego Blood Bank.While the convention isn't happening in person, locals can still participate in the yearly blood drive and score some SDCC swag while they're at it.San Diego Blood Bank is extending its annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive until Aug. 18 at any blood bank center or mobile donation drive. Donors will also receive a limited-edition Marvel Black Widow t-shirt while supplies last — a traditional reward for donors every Comic-Con.For the last 43 years, the blood bank says the drive has seen more than 25,000 pints of blood donated, impacting more than 75,000 lives.The drive is even more important this year as the blood bank faces a shortage amid the pandemic. Last month, the center said it's experiencing a critically low blood supply and all blood types are needed. Summer is usually a challenging time, according to the blood bank, strained even more without schools being open, businesses hosting drives, and as local hospitals continue surgeries delayed due to the pandemic.The blood bank is also testing all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies through the end of July. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in generally good health. Appointments must be made through the blood bank here. 1393

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Allied Gardens had a front row seat to a woman’s retirement.The group gathered outside a home as a pre-built granny flat was lifted into the backyard with a crane.Tula Striffler chose the option as a way to be close to her daughter.“I think it’s an economical way for me to still live my life fully and do it on a retirement budget,” said Striffler.Michael Avery owns Instant Guest Homes. He says many of his customers are using the homes for secondary income, or a way to expand their family’s living space.“These home are start to finish 90,000 dollars, everything is included except for the permit fees,” Avery said.Earlier this year, the City of San Diego reduced the cost of granny flat permits, which ranged from ,000 to ,000.After a steady process, Striffler’s home was gently placed in her daughter’s backyard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police released a sketch Thursday depicting the suspect of a sexual assault at Black's Beach near La Jolla Shores this week.San Diego Police say the female victim was jogging on the beach Wednesday when she was sexually assaulted. The suspect slapped the woman's buttocks twice and grabbed her in the genital area before she broke free and called for help.Officers responded by did not find the man. The suspect is described as a Black man between 30 and 40 years old, with short to no hair and an earring in one ear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Friday, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit held a press conference to address the controversy surrounding the recent “awards for arrests” program email. It was the chief’s first press conference on a department matter since taking the seat two weeks ago. He announced that a formal investigation had been launched to figure out how the program details were sent out to officers without getting prior approval from supervisors. 10News broke the story earlier this week, after a San Diego police officer approached Team 10 to share information about a program email he found “unethical”. The email was sent last Friday from a sergeant to more than 90 officers in SDPD’s Southern Division. It outlined a new voluntary program offering points to officers who make more drug arrests and give out more drug citations. The highest point-earners would have the opportunity to work in specialized units for up to a month. “Let me make this very clear. San Diego Police Department doesn't have a quota system,” said Nisleit on Friday. “I can tell you right now [that] this program was never authorized, nor was it ever implemented and nor did anybody ever receive any rewards for making arrest,” he added, along with, “This program was never intended to target anyone from a specific group, race or socio-economic class.” However, the timeline would suggest that the program was briefly implemented. The email was released last Friday morning. The chief says he stopped the program last Saturday. An official retraction email was sent Monday afternoon.  Chief Nisleit told reporters he reviewed the number of arrests in the Southern Division and they have not spiked, suggesting officers were not participating in any incentive program. The original email sent by the sergeant reads in part, “there are similar programs going on in other divisions.” The chief told reporters he has no knowledge of any other point system program taking place anywhere else in the department. Any disciplinary action for the email and program are contingent upon the results of the investigation. 2156
