CINCINNATI -- In a “bold move,” Kroger will phase out plastic bags and transition to reusable bags by 2025, according to CEO Rodney McMullen.The Cincinnati-based grocery chain announced the switch Thursday, saying the move “will better protect our planet for future generations."Kroger-owned QFC in Seattle will be the first to make the transition; plastic bags are expected to be eliminated there by 2019.Kroger Executive Vice President Mike Donnelly said the decision aligns with the company’s commitment to making a positive social impact.  "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," Donnelly said in a news release. McMullen said the move to nix plastic correlates with the company’s “Zero Hunger | Zero Waste commitment” -- a goal to divert waste from landfills and donate food to hungry families.The grocery chain has also been redesigned milk jugs in an effort to use less plastic, CNN reported. Children and the elderly may be good at spreading the coronavirus among their age groups, and young adults may be the primary source of community spread, or “super spreading,” according to a new study.The study, published Wednesday, involved the coronavirus testing results of a large contract tracing effort in two states in India. Researchers had results from more than half a million people from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh regions traced after more than 80,000 primary, or index, positive cases.They found that only 8 percent of index cases accounted for 60 percent of new infections. And that about 70 percent of infected people did not infect any of their contacts."That's a hugely disproportionate effect. Superspreading has been suspected, but not really documented,” study leader Ramanan Laxminarayan of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in New Delhi, and also of Princeton University, told CNN.“The greatest proportion of test-positive contacts within most age groups were exposed to index cases ages 20-44 years,” researchers found.While that age group resulted in the highest rate of secondary cases, children under 15 also had high rates of secondary spread among their own age group.During the time period researchers looked at, roughly March through August, schools were closed and there were still high rates of coronavirus recorded among children."While the role of children in transmission has been debated, we identify high prevalence of infection among children who were contacts of cases around their own age," the team wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.The data was collected thanks to rigorous surveillance and contact tracing measures.“Procedures include syndromic surveillance and (COVID-19) testing for all individuals seeking care for severe acute respiratory illness or influenza-like illness at healthcare facilities; delineation of 5km “containment zones” surrounding cases for daily house-to-house surveillance to identify individuals with symptoms; and daily follow-up of all contacts of laboratory-confirmed or suspect COVID-19 cases, with the aim of testing these individuals 5-14 days after their contact with a primary case, irrespective of symptoms, to identify onward transmission,” the study lays out. 2292

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - A former San Diego psychiatrist who reportedly had offices in Chula Vista, San Ysidro, Kearny Mesa and El Cajon pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of having sexual contact with seven female patients during office visits and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery for groping an eighth woman.Leon Fajerman, 75, will be ordered to serve 365 days in custody and be required to register as a sex offender at a sentencing hearing Jan. 18.Judge Francis Devaney will consider alternatives to actual jail time, according to Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger, City News Service reported.REPORT: San Diego County psychiatrist charged with sexual battery, having sex with patientFajerman -- who has been a licensed physician in California since 1978 -- voluntarily surrendered his medical license in May, state records show.In September 2017, court records showed that Fajerman assaulted three female patients, including one who said he groped her breasts and buttocks, according to the Union-Tribune.The complaints were turned in to the Medical Board of California. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- More than 20 people showed up to a town hall meeting hosted by the Baldwin and Sons regarding their development in Otay Ranch.Right now, the massive project includes 292 condos, 300 apartments, a 2-acre park and 15,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, as well as two hotels.  One of the hotels opened in 2017, and condos are under construction.The developer now wants to add 300 more apartments to their plan.  They say the plan will not require any additional space but instead will require a different building and site design.RELATED: Developer wants to add 300 apartments to Chula Vista propertyMany in the community raised concerns about traffic and the overcrowding in schools at the open house. Developers were there to address those concerns.According to Nick Lee, a study of the area says the roads it can accommodate nearly 12,000 trips a day. Even with the additional 300 units, it would push those numbers to around 8,000 trips a day.They also said they’ve spoken with the Elementary and High School districts, and both have told them they should be able to accommodate the students with their existing facilities.The developers expect to bring the new plans to planning commission next month. 1268

CINCINNATI -- Lockland (Ohio) firefighter Michael Allen said he could feel his heart beating in his chest when he heard a 10-month-old was trapped in an apartment fire.A mother had been cooking at her apartment on Sunday when a fire started in the kitchen. She was able to get three of her children outside, but the smoke was too thick for her to get to her baby. A police officer tried to rescue the child, but he too was swallowed in smoke.Allen was on his way to the fire when he learned the child was trapped on the second floor.“There was no thinking twice, there was no second guessing in what had to be done.  You just – you know everything comes to you, things (you've) probably not thought about in five years … everything comes back, and you jump in the action and you go,” Allen said.He said he could see the fire growing from the kitchen when he opened the door. He heard the baby crying as he put his oxygen mask on and made his way through the smoke to the second floor.“The baby stopped crying, so then immediately you’re thinking the worst is about to happen,” Allen said. “I made it into her bedroom. I found the crib relatively quick, was able to pick her up and when I did she did start to cry again, so I took my mask off, covered her face up and brought her outside to mom.”Allen has been a firefighter for more than 10 years. He said nothing tops the joy he felt when he handed the baby to her mother.“It’s an incredible feeling. It’s exactly why we do this job,” Allen said. “It doesn’t matter who you are. You become a fireman to help people and make their day better than what it was before you got there.”First responders gave the baby oxygen and transported her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for observation, but she is expected to be OK.Allen said he knows things could have been much worse.“Had we been on a call, you gotta have units respond from other departments if you’re out, so knowing that everything just fell in place perfectly today and that little baby is going to make it … it’s a good feeling,” he said. 2097
