Younger gun owners report carrying their firearms on them much more frequently than older gun owners, expressing a higher level of support for concealed carry, according to a poll conducted in July by Ipsos in partnership with Newsy for its new special report "Young Guns."While younger Americans in the survey were just as likely to own guns (28 percent) as older generations (27 percent), they were almost twice as likely to report carrying their guns on them, with 43 percent of younger gun owners (ages 18-34) polled saying they carry a gun at least once a month compared to 23 percent of older American gun owners (ages 35 and up).While popular belief may view younger generations as less tolerant of guns, the Newsy/Ipsos survey results show a far more nuanced view. The survey also reveals the emerging habits and attitudes for young gun owners after the last decade of rapid growth in gun sales and in the number of concealed carry permits.The findings are explored in "Young Guns," a Newsy special report that flips the narrative about younger Americans and guns by examining changes in the gun industry and its consumers — from an increasing interest in self-defense to a growing online community of gun-focused video channels. in Terminal 4.The TSA says the incident happened Tuesday morning around 9:45 a.m. local time.In a press release, TSA said the man was unprovoked and attempted to rush through the security at Terminal 4.According to police documents, 19-year-old Tyrese Garner pushed his way past other passengers and charged through the metal detector before punching a TSA agent and knocking her to the ground.He reportedly punched four other TSA agents before he was subdued. Police officers arrived and arrested him on charges of criminal trespassing, assault and resisting arrest.Documents say he tried to resist arrest, kicking and writhing while refusing to be taken out of the terminal.One transportation security officer (TSO) was taken to the hospital and at least four others were taken to an urgent care facility. Their exact injuries and conditions are unknown at this time."Got done putting my shoes on and was walking down the hallway part there and all of a sudden I heard screaming and hollering," said witness Donnie Jones, who had just passed through security when the incident occurred.Jones said he's unsure what prompted the man to allegedly try and rush through the checkpoint."When he was coming over that counter...he was like jumping at somebody and you could just see a bunch of swinging and that and you couldn't really tell what was going on," he said. "I don't know what his deal was. It was just an unhappy guy rushing through there."Documents say Garner is from Texas and is mentally unstable. Women senators from both parties — all 22 of them — called on Senate leadership to bring about legislation to update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of all forms of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.The House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation in February aimed at preventing sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces and helping the survivors of these acts seek justice.The full text of the Senators' letter reads:Dear Leader McConnell and Senator Schumer:We write to express our deep disappointment that the Senate has failed to enact meaningful reforms to the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995. We urge you to bring before the full Senate legislation that would update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.Everyone deserves to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. In November, with your leadership, the Senate took an important first step in the effort to end harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces with the passage of S. Res. 330, which requires anti-harassment and discrimination training for all Senators and staff at least once each Congress. While this training requirement was a significant step to address workplace harassment, there was broad, bipartisan agreement at that time that more had to be done to support survivors.Although the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) implemented meaningful reforms when it became law in 1995, it continues to require survivors to endure an antiquated dispute resolution process, including a month-long counseling session, forced mediation and a 30-day “cooling off” period before a victim can make a decision whether to pursue justice in a courtroom or continue with administrative procedures. The time has come to rewrite the CAA to provide a more equitable process that supports survivors of harassment and discrimination.The Senate’s inaction stands in stark contrast to the bipartisan effort in the House of Representatives that led to the passage of bipartisan CAA reform legislation in February. The House bill includes a number of important provisions, such as eliminating waiting periods before a victim can take their case to court, increased transparency for awards and settlements, and a requirement that Members of the Senate and House pay for an award or settlement stemming from a case of sexual harassment or discrimination that they personally commit.When the Senate considers CAA reform legislation, we will also have the ability to address an inequity that now exists between House and Senate staff. The House of Representatives passed H. Res. 724 that provides House staff who are survivors of harassment or discrimination access to free legal representation. Senate staff who face similar harassment or discrimination must pay personally for legal representation or represent themselves through complicated legal proceedings. Therefore, the Senate must act quickly to provide Senate staff with the same resources as their House colleagues.Inaction is unacceptable when a survey shows that four out of 10 women congressional staffers believe that sexual harassment is a problem on Capitol Hill and one out of six women in the same survey responded that they have been the survivors of sexual harassment. Survivors who have bravely come forward to share their stories have brought to light just how widespread harassment and discrimination continue to be throughout Capitol Hill. No longer can we allow the perpetrators of these crimes to hide behind a 23-year-old law. You could call them a saving grace. One type of business was deemed essential at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that helped families living paycheck to paycheck – pawnshops."This is actually our history," Andrew Charbonneau said as he showed off an Edison cylinder phonograph at his shop, Palm Beach Pawn King in North Palm Beach, Florida. Typically searching for precious antiques, Charbonneau said this year, treasure hunting took a backseat in the pawnshop industry."I think we're all in a situation we're not used to, so everybody is doing what we call [to survive]," said Charbonneau, who also owns two other pawnshops, American Gun and Pawn in West Palm Beach and Andrew's Coin and Jewelry in Delray Beach.Across his three shops, Charbonneau saw firsthand what the lockdown in March did to local families."We had a lot of nervous individuals that have never pawned before in their life, and they were in a situation where they had nowhere to go, no other avenues to obtain cash," he said.Some bank branches were temporarily closed, hours reduced in others, but those in the pawning business were open."The essential aspect of what we do was very important for the community because the bank will not lend you on your cellphone, won't lend you on your computer," said Charbonneau.The COVID-19 pandemic put thousands of people in Palm Beach County out of work.According to statistics from the state Department of Economic Opportunity, the city hit hardest was Boynton Beach. In just 30 days, the unemployment rate increased from 4.7 in March to 17.5 in April."They would come in and say, 'I lost my job because of the pandemic,'" said Bobby Gloyd, an employee at G & C Pawn Shop in Boynton Beach.Unemployment rates from the state show Delray Beach had the second-highest increase in unemployment within Palm Beach County, going from 4.2 unemployment rate in March to 15.4 in April. Riviera Beach was the third, jumping from a 5.5 unemployment rate in March to 15.1 the next month.Gloyd said that people pawn the items that hold the most value to pay their mortgages and rent."Gold is always good. It's easier to sell and also has a lot of value," said Gloyd."Family heirlooms, anything jewelry related that has emotionally passed down value, meaning sentimental value. We did see a lot of that. It wasn't so much about selling. They were still nervous about losing it because they didn't know if they'd ever be able to pick it back up," said Charbonneau.When those stimulus and unemployment checks did start coming through, pawnshops say business shifted to sales. They were selling laptops, gaming systems, anything that could help people get through quarantine."Everybody was looking for laptops, I guess when the kids were being homeschooled," said Gloyd."PS4 was one of the big things. If I had 500 of them, [they] would have sold within a week, at the time period," added Charbonneau.Musical instruments, tools for home improvements were all among the hot commodities. And then there were items people couldn't find at retail stores."Bike sales were very, very high. I would say that was a 75%-plus increase. Work out equipment again; we're not used to selling that. It usually sits on the shelves, so there was a lot of increases in fields that I would never project in the future will be the same,” said Charbonneau.Most pawnshop owners said people not only came back for their pawned items when they got their stimulus checks, but they also bought more."iPad air: a lot of people were looking for that," said Charbonneau."The newest thing is like sneakers. ... They've been probably easier to sell than tools. It's nuts," added Gloyd.With 2020 coming to an end, pawnshop owners like Charbonneau, who have been in the business for 40 plus years, say they could have never predicted business trends this year.
