SAN DIEGO (KGTV):SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Ten budding businesses will have a chance for a big boost when they compete for up to ,000 in cash during Thursday night's Quick Pitch Competition.The event, similar to the TV show "Shark Tank," gives each business-owner two minutes to wow the judges.The ten companies range from tech start-ups to medical research companies (For more information on the 10 finalists, click here). They were chosen from around 280 that applied."It's more art than science," says Mike Krenn, the CEO of San Diego Venture Group. They're one of the sponsors of the event. "There were so many companies. We fought long and hard over who were the final 10. But they've all got some momentum going to market, all chasing big opportunities."One company, DoWhop, is an online marketplace to buy and sell experiences around San Diego. It's founder, Rae Lietzau, says winning this competition would mean expanding her workforce and bandwidth on the site."At this stage, every dollar counts," says Lietzau. "Right now it means allowing more people to get paid to do what they love to do."In addition to SD Venture Group, the event is put on by Tech Coast Angels and the John G. Howard Foundation. All three groups work to improve business in the region. Krenn says this year's competition shows how San Diego has become a hub for start-ups."We're really on the upswing," says Krenn. "It's exciting to see a lot of people imported from silicon valley. Everything's trending in the right direction."Krenn also noted that the winning team from 2 years ago went on to raise around million in capital after the competition.Even companies that don't win cash at Quick Pitch usually get a boost from the exposure. The audience is full of venture capitalists and other potential investors."It gives them the ability to get on their radar earlier so when they come back for funding, people are already familiar with them as well as their milestones," says Victoria Laker, the Pitch Chair for Tech Coast Angels.The event starts at 5 pm at Qualcomm Hall. The “Super Tuesday” primary in the country's most populous state comes amid changes aimed at expanding voter participation, including new voting equipment and vote centers that are replacing polling places in some counties. Those changes may confuse some people. There are fears California might end up with a mess much worse than Iowa, where the Democratic Party couldn't declare a winner for several days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With the rainy season ahead, the City of San Diego is offering ways for residents to save money on their water bills by removing lawns and installing rain barrels. The City is offering .25 per square foot for lawns that are converted to turf that can capture rainfall for reuse. Homeowners that convert their lawn into drought resistant landscape can apply for financial rebates.Customers may receive  per gallon of barrel storage capacity for residential rainwater collecting up to 400 gallons or 0 per property. Rain barrels are a great way to conserve water and reuse for irrigation purposes as well as preventing pollution, according to city officials. Applications are available for Rainwater Harvest, to apply click here. For more information on the types of rebates and water conservation tips visit the City's website. 949

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- After being under a federally mandated quarantine at MCAS Miramar for two weeks, Steven and Michele Smith are finally heading home to Paradise, California."Tomorrow morning we're putting our bags on the other side of that door and we're heading on a bus to the airport. We're going to rent a car and drive 600 miles home," said Steven Smith in a Skype interview with 10News.The two would have been back home weeks ago after their planned cruise to Hawaii, but due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship they were on, they and all other passengers had to go into quarantine once their ship finally docked in Oakland."My sister is taking care of my birds, my daughter is taking care of my dog, and then my friend is taking care of our cat," said Michele Smith.The Smiths will complete their 14-day quarantine Tuesday and drive home Wednesday. Health and Human Services officials tell us nearly 50 people quarantined at Miramar left Tuesday, and the remaining 130 people will be discharged over the next two days. For nearly two weeks, their temperatures were checked twice a day. The Smiths mostly remained inside of a room at the Consolidated Bachelor Quarters on base, had food delivered three times a day, and only stepped outside occasionally."You can go out and walk outside, they have a fenced-in area that they keep us inside of," said Steven Smith.They were tested for COVID-19 and got their results back Monday."It was just a weird test, to have somebody shove something up your nose that far back into your nasal cavity," Steven Smith explained."But we tested negative!" added an excited Michele. "So, we are virus free 100 percent."They are thrilled to be heading home healthy and say their positive attitude and sense of humor helped get them through this unusual time.Michele leaves others just starting their quarantine with this advice, "I would recommend to all the people out there, now is not the time to bring up negative things or things that could create conflict, but just to love on each other, laugh and enjoy each other." 2101

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thousands of survivors laced up their walking shoes this morning to support breast cancer survivors and others battling the disease.The annual Susan G. Women San Diego Race for the Cure was held in Balboa Park this morning. The main focus of the event is to bring awareness to breast cancer.Organizers say early detections and knowing your family health history can save your life.“When I was 10 my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. So I’ve been really diligent throughout my whole life in getting mammograms," Survivor Merrilee Neal says. Komen San Diego offers a number of free resources, including free mammograms.“I am a recipient of the Susan G Komen free mammograms and that’s where my breast cancer was detected,’ says survivor Wendy Shurelds.In San Diego, six women are diagnosed with breast cancer each day. The state of California and the Komen Foundation teamed up for an initiative, called “The Circle of Promise,” to educate women.“The Circle of Promise was created for African American women, due to the fact that the African American women mortality rate is 41% higher in San Diego than any other race.”The goal for the event was 5,000.
