That black hole you've seen everywhere now has a name.It's been christened Powehi — a Hawaiian phrase referring to an "embellished dark source of unending creation."The groundbreaking, first-ever photograph of a black hole was published around the world when it was unveiled on Wednesday, captivating viewers and providing the only direct visual evidence that these regions of spacetime exist.The responsibility of finding it a name fell to Larry Kimura, a Hawaiian language professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, who was approached by astronomers involved with the project. Two of the eight telescopes used to capture the photograph are located in Hawaii.Powehi was chosen for its roots in the Kumulipo, an 18th-century Hawaiian chant that describes a creation story.It puts together two terms from the chant: Po, meaning profound dark source of unending creation, and wehi (or wehiwehi) which is one of the several ways that po is described in the chant."It is awesome that we, as Hawaiians today, are able to connect to an identity from long ago, as chanted in the 2,102 lines of the Kumulipo, and bring forward this precious inheritance for our lives today," Kimura said in a statement."To have the privilege of giving a Hawaiian name to the very first scientific confirmation of a black hole is very meaningful to me and my Hawaiian lineage that comes from po," he added. "I hope we are able to continue naming future black holes from Hawaii astronomy according to the Kumulipo."Powehi was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope, a project that connected eight telescopes around the world.The supermassive black hole and its shadow, at the center of a galaxy known as M87, were photographed back in April 2017, but the results were only revealed on Wednesday."We have seen what we thought was unseeable," said Sheperd Doeleman, director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, unveiling the historic snap. "We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole."More than 200 researchers were involved in the project, and they had worked for more than a decade to capture the image. The death of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy who died while in United States custody was caused by complications from the flu and a bacterial infection, the Central American country's foreign ministry said.Felipe Gómez Alonzo died of Influenza B complicated by a staph bacteria infection that led to sepsis, the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry said.Marta Larra, the ministry's spokeswoman, said Guatemalan officials received an autopsy report on Monday.Influenza B is among the viruses that cause seasonal epidemics most winters in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator said it has not finalized its autopsy report on Felipe's death, said Alexandra Sanchez, the office's spokeswoman.The office had said Felipe tested positive for Influenza B but a cause of death had not been determined at the time.CNN has reached out to US Customs and Border Protection for comment.The boy died on Christmas Eve at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, about 90 miles north of the border crossing in El Paso, Texas.He was detained with his father for illegal entry about 3 miles west of the Paso del Norte port of entry in El Paso.Felipe was taken to the hospital after a border agent noticed signs of illness, and the medical staff first diagnosed him with a common cold and later detected a fever."The child was held for an additional 90 minutes for observation and then released from the hospital midafternoon on December 24 with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen," CBP said in a statement. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting early Monday morning at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay.Deputies say just before midnight, two men got into an argument in the parking lot outside the mosque during a Ramadan event attended by several hundred people.At some point during the argument, one of the men fired at the other.An off-duty deputy, who had just finished working security detail at the event, heard the gun shots and rushed to the parking lot.The Sheriff's Office reports the deputy found one man holding a gun and another man who had been shot at least two times. The deputy detained the suspect shooter until additional units arrived on scene.Paramedics rushed the victim to Tampa General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.Authorities say the public is not in danger. They believe the two men knew one other and were both attending prayer services at the mosque.Homicide detectives are interviewing the shooter who is cooperating. They want to determine the nature of the argument and whether the shooting could be classified as self defense.No charges have been filed.The Sheriff's Office says there is no indication the shooting is in any way related to a terror attack and only appears to be a dispute between the two people involved. 1309
