SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scooter riders near the beach are checking their rides a little closer following reports of a group of vandals cutting the brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "That actually happened to me once in Key West. I had rented scooters and somebody had cut the gas line and we had to walk several miles,” said Jamie Gustine. It was a gas line then, but Jamie says now she’s forced to worry about cut brake lines when she rides. "My kids have ridden them, I have an 8 year old and a 12 year old who was riding the scooter as well, so that's where it scares me the most," she continued. Several people took to social media after the holiday weekend reporting a group of people cutting brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "It's always something you're thinking about as a parent,” said Michael Cole. Michael Cole, thinking about it as he teaches his 7-year-old daughter to ride. "Somebody is eventually going to get hurt when you're doing something like that, especially down here by the beach, you grab a scooter, you're not thinking that someone cut the break lines."San Diego Police say you should contact the scooter company directly so they can remove the damaged scooters from the streets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six San Diego State University students have been diagnosed with mumps in the last week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. All six of the students live off campus at BLVD63, an apartment complex not affiliated with the university. “These six mumps cases represent a small outbreak of this highly contagious viral disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best way to prevent mumps is by getting the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR vaccine.”RELATED: San Diego State student diagnosed with mumpsAs a result of the outbreak, the agency will be conducting free vaccination clinics at the apartment complex from 3 to 6 p.m. on February 27 and 28 for BLVD63 residents and SDSU students wishing to be immunized. A third dose is also being recommended for anyone who lives or works at BLVD63. “Student Health Services (SHS) was able to quickly respond to this public health concern and worked to isolate these students, as well as provide initial information to our campus community,” said Libby Skiles, SDSU's SHS Director. “In collaboration with the county, our team is supporting the impacted students and working to proactively protect the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”The cases come amid an uptick in local cases in recent months, health officials say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld’s rescue team is in full swing, rescuing more than 150 animals and birds so far this year. More than 80 marine mammals and over 75 birds have so far been rescued in 2019, with the goal of rehabilitating and returning them to their homes, SeaWorld says. On April 2, the team rescued a 10-month-old sea lion pup with a two-inch cut on its flipper from a coastal rock in Ocean Beach. After being treated, the team hopes to return him to the wild in six to eight weeks. Wednesday, the team also returned 13 rehabilitated sea lions to the ocean. SeaWorld San Diego has rescued more than 20,000 animals over the last 55 years, according to a news release. 687
