SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People on social media reacted after students all over San Diego County walked out of class Wednesday to show solidarity in protesting gun violence. The walkouts began at 10 a.m. and lasted 17 minutes, one minute for each of those killed in the Parkland shooting. Photos posted on various social media platforms show students holding posters and standing together in protest.  419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Multiple former students of San Diego's Christian Youth Theater, known as CYT, are coming forward with stories of sexual assault, abuse and misconduct.On the phone Tuesday, the president of CYT confirmed that one of her own close family members claims that he was even abused when he was in CYT many years ago.On its Facebook page, the El Cajon-based theater group has acknowledged recent accusations of sex abuse from former students.Part of its statement reads, “We are deeply saddened to learn about statements that have recently been made on social media involving former CYT students, and we want you to know that we take these allegations very seriously…We have been working tirelessly on these issues with the authorities, outside consultants, staff, and the Board of Directors since they were brought to our attention…"San Diego attorney Jessica Pride said Tuesday that she's representing a former student who claims she was sexually abused starting in 2006. “The first time she was 13 and it continued until she was 15-years-old,” said Pride.The after-school theater arts training program was founded 40 years ago and is for students ranging from 4-years-old to 18-years-old. On its website, CYT writes that its grown to be the largest youth theater program in the nation with branches across the country, training thousands of students a year.Tuesday, CYT President Janie Russell Cox would not confirm the number of alleged victims or whether the accusations of abuse were between just students or students and teachers, but said claims have come from alumni- not current students.Cox confirmed that her close family member publicly posted on social media his own account of abuse from many years ago. She said she's heartbroken and wants to be transparent and will provide an on-camera interview in the upcoming days.Pride said dozens of other former students are now contacting the firm. “The phone has been ringing off the hook with survivors who are calling and want to tell their story and want to make sure that CYT changes,” she added.San Diego Police told ABC10 News Tuesday that its Sex Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation in which there is an association with CYT.An advocate for several of the alleged victims is asking for any other possible victims to come forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents who want options for their child’s education can explore the possibilities this fall through the San Diego Unified School District’s School Choice program. School Choice gives students the chance to enroll in magnet programs or schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. Parents are responsible for transportation if their children attend a school through School Choice outside their community. Parents can apply for the program online or in person. In addition to specialty programs available to students through the choice application window, San Diego Unified also has free and fee-based, full and half-day enrollment seats available in the district’s Pre-K and Headstart programs. SDUSD’s Parent Welcome Center offers help for families with preschool through high school enrollment options. It provides parents with free one-on-one enrollment assistance year-round and is located at San Diego Unified District headquarters. The center is open to families by appointment or on a walk-in basis. The enrollment window opened October 7 and closes November 20. Each year, more than 10,000 area students apply for the choice program to attend one of the more than 180 schools in San Diego Unified. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On the edge of Balboa Park, parkgoers arrived Wednesday to a fresh layer of graffiti across a popular playground area.Joanne Schara leads a boot camp class at Bird Park at Upas three times a week. After a year of working out there, the things that drew her are now awash in graffiti. "It's just sad to see. You come here because you want a happy space. People bring their kids. People bring their pets. Its beautiful," said Schara.The tagging is everywhere, from the tables and benches and the wall wrapping around the playground area to utility boxes and graffiti on the ground."Doesn't give a good image at all," said Schara.Cathy Lea has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and takes her dogs to the park twice a day."When I see the graffiti, it's disheartening," said Schara.Lea says every few days, there is more graffiti. On the concrete wall that surrounds the park, there are countless layers of tagging that have been painted over, only to be tagged again."That's not what this park is about," said Lea.On the Nextdoor app, some longtime neighbors posted the current graffiti is the "worst they've ever seen." Lately the graffiti has started to creep into areas previously untouched, including the playground set and the nearby rocks. As the tagging spreads, so does the frustration."It's not the kind of message we want to be sending in North Park," said Lea.Several neighbors have posted on the city's Get It Done app to get it cleaned up.
