ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died after falling off a cliff in Escondido Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road late Thursday afternoon after reports of the man dangling more than 50 feet off the side of a cliff. The man was identified Friday as 75-year-old John David Bittner of Julian.Cal Fire says Bittner was working to replace batteries on wildlife cameras when the accident occurred. He was with a friend rappelling down a cliff in Brady Canyon with suffered a fall and yelled for help to his friend.RELATED: Local ill woman among those claiming they were misled by hydrogen water companyCrews were able to recover Bittner using a helicopter, but he enterted cardiopulmonary arrest and died at the scene, Cal Fire and the county Medical Examiner said.CalFire attempted to rescue a climber in remote Escondido who was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras. (KGTV) - A private elementary school in the North County is hoping an extensive safety plan could help secure a waiver to reopen the school in mid-August.When Governor Newsom issued his order stopping in-person schooling for counties on the watch list, plans to reopen came to a sudden halt. Amanda Johnston is principal at St. Mary's School in Escondido, a Catholic K-8 school. School officials started developing the plan in April. It includes limiting enrollment, which now stands at about 170 students. That will allow the school to social distance in each classroom."We can fit 18 to 22 students depending on the room, and each student has at least six feet of space in all directions," said Johnston.Within the room, each desk will contain plexiglass desk shields."24 inches tall and three sides. No matter which direction they're looking, they are protected," said Johnston.Other protective measures include deep cleanings at the end of each day, sanitizing surfaces throughout the day and hand washing stations.Teachers will wear face shields. Masks are mandatory for students in the third grade and higher. Masks will be strongly encouraged for younger children.Teachers will rotate in, while students most stay put, except for breaks and outdoor lessons."We're really appreciative of the fact there is going to be a potential waiver to reopen," said Johnston.Johnston is hoping the school's plans will help them secure an exemption. The state has said public school districts and private schools can seek a waiver from county health officers to reopen elementary schools."We definitely plan to take all the necessary steps once we understand all the criteria and the process," said Johnston.As the school awaits that guidance, the work continues. Underway now: a deep cleaning of the classrooms."Everything we have done had been to make sure when students return to campus, it is safe for everyone involved," said Johnston.The school is set to begin its school year August 19. 2012

Emails from top officials at the National Republican Congressional Committee were hacked during the 2018 midterm elections, Republican sources tell CNN, exposing the GOP's House campaign arm to an intrusion by an "unknown entity."The hack, which was first reported by Politico, was discovered by a vendor in April after emails from four senior committee aides had been surveilled for months, a Republican official with knowledge of the intrusion tells CNN.The revelation of the hack comes weeks after House Republicans lost their majority and saw Democrats pick up close to 40 seats in the House. In a sign of how serious the committee believed the hack to be, they brought on the law firm Covington and Burling to handle the issue, as well as Mercury Public Affairs to deal with the public relations around the intrusion.After the NRCC was alerted to the hack, top officials then informed CrowdStrike, a Republican official said, the cybersecurity firm that helped Democrats expel the Russians from their computer systems in 2016, and later shared information with the FBI as it investigated the election-season hacks.Ian Prior, a spokesman for the committee, said Tuesday that they were hacked "by an unknown entity.""The NRCC can confirm that it was the victim of a cyber intrusion by an unknown entity," said Prior. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido Police requested the public’s assistance Monday to find the driver responsible of a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist. The incident happened Oct. 16 at 4:38 p.m. in the 200 block of W. Washington Ave., police said. A man driving a white Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the motorcyclist and left the scene, according to investigators. Police said the man was in his late 30s, Hispanic, and had a mustache. He was wearing a gray shirt and baseball cap. There was a woman in the passenger seat and a child sitting between them. The first two digits on the license plate may be 8F. Police said the Ford F-150 will have damage to the rear passenger side tail light and tailgate.
