SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — La Jolla is home to award-winning food, scenic ocean views, and possibly, America's best bathroom. That's right, the push for the country's best restroom is on and La Jolla's Hotel La Jolla, Curio Collection by Hilton, is in the running. The La Jolla hotel hopes to bowl over the competition hosted by Cintas Corporation, which provides hygiene and safety products and services to various industries. Ten bathrooms from around the country are being considered, including a bathroom with a disco ball in Chicago, a "Hobbit-inspired" bathroom in Wisconsin, and even one covered in 250 pounds of glitter.GALLERY: A look inside the La?Jolla bathroom up for best in the U.S.La Jolla's bathroom sits on the 11th floor of the hotel, flush with spectacular views of the region's coastline."Facing the coast, the large windows capture the natural, constantly changing ocean light, complementing the earth tones of the restroom interior. In this restroom, it’s common for guests to spend extra time washing their hands just to gaze out at the beautiful views," Cintas says.Bathrooms were chosen based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality, ad unique design.Voting for the best bathroom is being held online through Sept. 18. Whichever location logs the most votes takes the throne as America's best bathroom as well as ,500 in facility services provided by Cintas. 1455

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In 2014, the Whittingtons shared their story about their first-born child in a video that went viral.Ryland was born a girl. “As soon as Ryland could speak, she would scream, ‘I am a boy!’” the video explained. As Ryland got older, the feelings got stronger. After consulting professionals and experts, parents Jeff and Hillary Whittington came to the conclusion Ryland was transgender. For their child’s well-being, they decided to allow him to transition as soon as possible.Today, the YouTube video about Ryland's journey has more than 8 million views. In a 2016 interview with 10News, Jeff Whittington explained some of the criticism his family received. “They think that this is something that just happened overnight. We just made this split-second decision and our son said, ‘I feel like a boy.’ And we said great. And that wasn’t the case,” he said.Hillary Whittington wrote a book about their journey, Raising Ryland."I think people are definitely opening their minds a lot more,” Hillary Whittington said, as she reflected on their family’s journey over the past several years.Jeff explained how they try to deal with those who do not agree with their family’s decision. “We recognize that a lot of that comes from background, stories, and experiences they’ve had. We tend to take that negativity and try and understand what the source of that may be and try and find empathy for those that are critical,” he said.Ryland, now 12-years-old, said he is comfortable with his story being so public. “I know it helps a lot of people,” he said.Last year, his family hosted a “coming out party” to share with loved ones. Ryland gave a speech in front of his friends and others close to him. “It’s not a secret, but for many years I’ve kept it private because I was afraid you might treat me differently or not look at me the same if you knew,” he said. “When I was born, the doctors told me that I was a girl. But they were wrong. In my head and in my heart, I’ve always been a boy.”Ryland is about to enter seventh grade. He loves math and sports—his favorites are ice hockey and lacrosse. He shared what Pride month means to him. “Pride month is just a month of showing who you are and showing that you support who people want to be,” Ryland said.“We’re grateful for who our kids are. They’ve taught us so much about life and I wouldn’t a thing about them,” Hillary said. For those who still have negative things to say about their family, Ryland’s 8-year-old sister shared her thoughts. “I would want to say to them that I don’t care what they think and that I am happy to be who I am and who my family is,” Bryn said.“She took the words right out of my mouth!” Ryland echoed. 2706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Major developments came late Tuesday to create countywide policy changes related to policing reforms. After several hours of testimony and public comments, all three parts of a policy package were voted on and passed by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors during a special meeting. It was introduced by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher who said it was designed to create more transparency and to start to change systemic and structural racism that has caused pain and harm to generations of African American people. The three proposals that passed include launching mobile crisis response teams made of social workers and clinicians instead of law enforcement for some mental health and homeless services and emergency calls, increasing independence and strengthening oversight of the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board and establishing an Office of Equity and Racial Justice.ABC10 News listened in as callers weighed in on both sides of the debate over the creation of an Office of Equity and Racial Justice. Many callers were in favor of its creation. Others argued that the County should consider a bolstered version brought forth by civil rights activist Rev. Shane Harris who recommended that the County increase the number of staffers assigned to the Office and increase its budget to million. The Board of Supervisors decided that the passed proposal for the Office of Equity and Racial Justice will need to be reviewed by an independent consultant and the Human Relations Commission will need to provide guidance on the Office’s mission.Late Tuesday, the Office of Supervisor Nathan Fletcher sent ABC10 News the following statement:“The Board of Supervisors today voted to support the entire Racial Justice and Law Enforcement Realignment Policy Package authored by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and crafted in partnership with respected leaders from the Black community. The three policies will strengthen the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board Authority and Independence, create an Office of Equity and Racial Justice for the County of San Diego and launch countywide Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT) to allow trained mental health clinicians, not law enforcement, to respond to non-violent service needs. The group released the following statement after the vote:‘The community called for change, and today’s action is a step forward. Tackling deep seeded issues of systemic and structural racism is not going to be easy and at times it will be uncomfortable, but, we will be a better organization and a better people because of the actions we take to support racial justice and realigning law enforcement. We are thankful for the considerable community input we received to shape these policies and tremendous support that helped ensure their passage. The most important days of this work are in front of us and we look forward to a continued partnership with Black community leaders as we put these policies into practice.’” 2972
