BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned assets in China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOE) reached 2.01 trillion yuan (297.40 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of June, up 10.71 percent from 2008, China's state-owned assets regulator said on Thursday.Nearly a quarter of the SOEs have state-owned assets over 10 billion yuan each, while six have state-owned assets over 100 billion yuan, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said in a statement on its website."China's state-owned capital has been flowing towards big companies with international competitiveness," said the statement.Some 30 central SOEs are listed as Fortune 500 companies. They are in sectors such as telecommunications, power generation and petro-chemicals.The number of China's central SOEs is 123 in August this year, down from 196 at the beginning of 2003.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization.The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.

BEIJING,July 11 (Xinhua) -- China issued a new anti-corruption regulation Sunday to require officials to report changes in their marital status, the whereabouts of their spouses and children if they have moved abroad, personal incomes, housing as well as their family' s investments.The new regulation was issued by the General Office of China's State Council and the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The regulation defines "officials" as those leaders holding official ranks of and above county level in government agencies, democratic parties, public institutions, state owned enterprises and state holding enterprises.The new regulation requires officials to report changes in their marital status and the location of their spouses and children if they have moved abroad, within 30 days after such a change takes place.Specifically, officials should report their ownership of passports or visas and their children's marital status if they are married to foreigners or residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.Officials should also report any businesses their spouses and children are involved in, both within China and abroad.The new regulation also requires officials to report their ownership of property, including property in their spouses' or children's names, their family's investment in financial assets and in enterprises.According to the regulation, if officials fail to report honestly or in a timely fashion, they would face punishment to various degrees, even as harsh as removal of official ranks.The regulation also ordered party organizations at all levels to strengthen management and supervision over officials to guarantee the implementation of the regulation.This regulation is considered an important measure to ensure strict self-discipline for Party and government officials and to improve the intra-Party supervision system.

CHENGDU, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 23 people have been killed and 30 are still missing as of Sunday evening after the worst rainstorm of the year lashed southwest China's Sichuan Province late Friday, the provincial civil affairs department said.More than 586,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes as torrential rains pounded 62 counties and cities in the province and triggered mountain torrents, landslides and house collapses, cutting off roads, electricity and communications in some regions.Half of the worst-hit Quxian County remains flooded, with water levels of up to 10 meters deep. BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) - As China's urban population reached 46 percent of the total population last year, Chinese urban dwellers became the largest such population in the world, according to a 'blue paper' released on Thursday.By the end of 2009, China's urban population reached 620 million as both the annual birth rate and the total urban population became the world' s largest, according to "City' s Blue Book: China's Urban Development Report No. 3," which has been released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Academic Press.It said China's urban population is twice that of the population of the United States and one quarter more than the total population of 27 countries of the European Union.By 2015, urban residents in China will make up about 52 percent, and by 2030, 65 percent of the total population in the country, it said."A milestone change for urban development will take place when urban people make up more than 50 percent of the population and thus surpass the number of rural people," the paper said."The 50-percent point phenomenon will occur in the mid-12th Development Program period (2011-2015) when both the number of urban and rural Chinese will reach 680 million," it said.The role of the urban economy will be further strengthened by that time, it said, adding that the urban economy would continue to drive the domestic demand.
